whelp..i found an FB for sale in my area..its a GSL model so it has a limited slip and such. but the engine is a 12A..makes around 100hp/100ftlb. i test drove it yesterday, great car to drive :) im having trouble selling the prelude, so my parents are gonna loan me the cash to buy the R and i'll pay them back when my lude sells. i've got some pretty big plans for this car...i've got a T3 turbo sitting in the garage, and i found a place that sells rebuilt 12A rotaries with a P&P job done, so i'll be doing an engine swap. my house has an air conditioned garage cause the former owner restored t-birds in it. should be a fun project car! there's a large hairpin at the end of the strip of land i live on..looks perfect for drifting

well..i'll call the place i'm getting the motor from. the core charge is different for the 13b from the GSL-SE model. so i'll see how much i can get for a 12A trade for a 13B. also..aren't the 13B fuel injected??i kinda like carburation ;)

If the 13b you get isnt carbed you can carb a 13b.
BTW not all ports are the same, on the rotary the shape and type of port is like a cam on a piston motor. Changes intake and exhaust duration, overlap, etc etc. Which shop did you find that sells rebuilt/ported 12a's?
Check these links for porting information

Also, a t3 turbo is too small, the rotary would outflow it, probably on a 12a and definatly on a 13b.
Also, check out http://www.nopistons.com
Great Rx-7 site with tons of info and knowledgeable people.

i dont remember but was it you lanevo that had a prelude? and anyways cool you got the "FB" go fix it up and OWN the drifting 👍 :D

I know a 13b will outflow a t3 easily so im pretty sure a 12a would too. t3's are more for 4banger hondas...
I've never heard of that site but since they say the replace all the seals/bearing/parts that need to be replaced it should be good.

yes..i still have the lude. BUY IT SOMEBODY...i guess i can sell the T3 then, i scrapped it off an '88 Dodge Daytona Shelby hehe.

and yes bustwave, i plan on completely maxing out the FB..that's why im getting the p&p done, so when i upgrade the carb/intake manifold/exhaust/exhaust manifold that rotary will be breathing good! right now im looking at holly and webber carbs..racing beat exhaust manifold..and i may not use a muffler :D i havn't started looking at suspension/wheel options yet..the factory wheels are 13"x5.5" :( but they are a collectors item..hehe. i probably won't go over 15" in height, but deffinatly more than 5.5 in width...i'll either go with some falken or yokohama tires..

as for exterior, i found a nice front air dam made by mariah, and they make a turbo II hood that i like but i can't find it on their site..i'll prolly paint it black, right now it's a dark grey color..(no clear coat left it looks like) and one headlight is blue :P ill do a sleepy eyes mod on it as soon as i get it home

i just drove the lude around to keep the batt charged..i'm gonna miss that horsepower, but i won't miss the understeer!! :P :P

TurboII's are second gens, their hood wont fit on a first gen, i think i place sells the scoop like the TII scoop to be modled onto a fb hood.

Also tell the shop that its gonna be turboed and see if they can put in some low compression rotors to handle the boost. You can boost the high compression NA rotors but tuning must be perfect.
I know of a few engine swapped FB's. One with a 13brew out of a FD (93+ rx-7) thats turboed and a 13bre which is out of a japenese car called the cosmo is also turbo.
In japan there were 12at, 12as that came turbo from the factory.

yeah..its a custom hood. it resembles the Turbo II scoop, but the rest of the hood is all FB. i'm still not totally sure if i want to boost it. i may down the road...but deffinatly not any time soon.

the 12A currently in the car has around 100k..but one of the coolant o-rings is bad in the first rotor compartment. water gets in the cumbustion chamber and fouls the plug a bit...but once the engine is warm you hardley notice it.

No, a T3 would work great on that engine unless you're looking for huge boost. I'll do the calculations to figure out how much boost you could get if you'd like. Just let me know what mods you're going to do to it, including the highest you think your redline will ever be, and also tell me the turbo model if you can. Like T25, T28, etc, or the compressor trim like 45, 50...

The 12A needs a rebuild every 10,000 miles or so because the apex seals tend to go bad really fast. Another advantage to getting a 13B. =)

the most i would run would be around 7psi...redline can stay stock at 7k i guess hehe how would you raise the rpm of a rotary? normally a different head/cam package for a piston engine..but a rotary

the 12A engines from that place have revised apex seals. they last a little longer than the original ones..

Well I don't know much about the 12A but I know the 13B has no problems with a redline of about 9k, or higher if you build it up real nice. Rotaries rev high, but they are low displacement so the airflow still isn't that high.

Assuming a redline of 8000, and a volumetric efficiency of about 75% which I think is about normal for a decently modded rotary, and that you are using a small intercooler... and assuming that the turbo you have is say, a 45-trim (T25), you should be good for about 15 PSI (about 1 bar). 45-trim is the second-smallest T3 on the market. There's 40, 45, 50, 60, and super-60 which is pretty much identical to the 60. Just a little more efficient for larger displacement lower boost engines I think.

with the enlarged ports on the engine i'm getting..i should be able to rev a little higher than the factory redline of 7,000..or am i wrong?

I'm sorry I don't really know much about rotaries, just turbos. When it comes to the mechanics of the turbo, rotaries are no different from any other engine =)

Oh and I was wrong, you could go much higher than 15 PSI I had forgotten one step in the math. You could theoretically go up to about 23 PSI but if you have a water-cooled turbo then I wouldn't recommend going above 17 or 18 just to give the turbo some headroom. I went about that high (23 or so) with a T25 water-cooled and the coolant was boiling for over an hour afterwards. Also blew the head gasket and shredded all my motor mounts. It was a bad day.

Yes if you go for porting instead of turbo you can get xtra revs my 12A J port used to pull 13,000 rpm happilly but yes it did go pop one day.
The turbo option IMO is the best option they just pull so hard. you can do some lite porting but nothing drastic to cause an overlap in timing (exhaust port open when inductions happening) but ports sound so kewl BRAP BRAP BRAP but are really loud
,If you rebuild what ever you do make sure you get ceramic apex seals even though they dont last as long between rebiuilds, If for some reason one of them lets go it saves the rotor housings from mayjor scrathing resulting in replacement, more money.
Unless the engine you have now is a turbo one you will need decompressed rotors as well or it wont last long.

HEHE well there's a stage 1 and stage 2 port i can get done to the rebuilt engine...my dad says go for the stage 2 ($395) but i dunno if its worth it  also..with these larger ports, how's my fuel consumption gonna be? and do rotaries need premium gas? does it help them out? my prelude is premium only because of its compression...just wondering :)

OHHH... I was confused by what FBRX-7 meant... I am used to seeing it as the "SA22 RX-7".
I might be picking one up as well, but it's a secret... if I get it... I will post pics...

the body style changed a few ways..like the bumper and stuff. i think from '82 to '85 it was called an FB.

well the deal is sealed..i made an offer to the guy and he accepted. i'll pick up the car tomorrow and take pics for you guys :P so that makes me the proud owner of a '85 RX-7 GSL....ROTARY POWER

So now are you gonna change your name to RotaryLuvr and put a picture of a rotor on your profile, and change your signature to "If it isn't a rotary, it doesn't belong in a car"?
(sorry, couldn't resist, I'm getting sick of those elitist rotary guys)

For what it's worth, I do like rotaries and if I was a buzillionaire I would use one.

PICTURES!! AHHH!!

12A rotary..4 barrel nikki carburator
