Glass pack on a V6?

Second worst sound on this planet, actually.

The worst being a V6 breathing through a Flowmaster or two.
 
This is somewhat relevant to my interests. Out of curiosity, what would you people consider a good, fairly loud V6 exhaust? Engine is a GM 3.1 V6 circa 1993...

Erm...

Good and "fairly loud" on a GM 60deg V6 do not go together. Have fun with your tractor.
 
Really not worth it...
A chum built a nice system that sounds good on mine (imo) but it was all hand built from various bits and silencers from another car. You might get lucky and find a system that makes it sound ok, chances are slim, and going by the videos I've seen I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be with glasspacks :lol:

They sound better with open headers than glass packs. I've got a '81 Camaro in my school shop with a 6 in it with 'em on it. Sounds terrible.
 
That entire family of GM V6s are some of the most awful sounding mechanical monsters ever devised by humanity. May they all be sold for scrap and melted into something useful.

I agree with this. My mom owns a Pontiac Montata SV6 and the noise is unlike any other V6's that I've ever heard in my life.
 
That's actually quite true of the 4300 V6 found in pickup trucks and vans. I've had personal experience with two of them and the sound could best be described as an unpleasent wheeze + moan.

The 3100, in stock trim, actually sounds pretty decent, though maybe I just have low standards or strange taste. A louder version of the stock sound might be good, but if I can make it sound different & better altogether...
 
All GM V6's sound terrible. Fact. A glass pack of Flowmaster is only going to make more suffer when you drive.

Best sounding V6 that pops into mind for me would be the NSX. Straight 6 would be an M3. The VR6 in the R32's sounds pretty nice as well.
 
GM v6's may sound bad but there pretty ballsy motor's the 3800's make good power.

The early Buicks where pretty beasty they could really move for how much they weighed.
As a vehicle i use to hall random crap i got a 95 Lumina with the 3100 in it and like
"white & nerdy" said it sounds ok, the exhaust was going on it so i side piped it with a Glasspack and it sound's more ricey than tractorish.
Atm it sounds terrible it has some ignition problem.
As a whole its ready for the scrap yard, Ive been to a few and seen better ones there than mine :D

We were lucky enough to get Alfa Romeo V6s over here for a good many years. It made V6s my favourite engine layout for quite a while until I realised that actually the Alfa was in a minority as far as nice-sounding 6s went.

Why am I ever so slightly not surprised that the OP has started another thread about essentially making a car noisy, after all his ricer/fart can threads?...

If that's the same engine (or similar) that GM put in the 2003 Grand Am (GM V6 engines are hard to keep track of), then no.

My favorite is personally the VR6. Just... god. I would put up with VW silliness just to have a VR6.
 
As I recall, the Grand Am of that vintage had a 3.4. Apparently it's capable of some pretty decent power output, though I know nothing of how it sounds.
 
It's the same family of engines. They started out as 2.8s then went up to 3.1 and then to 3.4. The 3.8s are really nice engines but the three I already mentioned should be avoided.

The 4.3 is a 90deg. In fact, it's an SBC with two cylinders missing, effectively.

Much of the nastiness comes from it being, well, a V6 and being kept relatively quiet because stock. Doesn't get better if you go louder though, it'll always sound like a tractor. Still a V6.

It should be kept as quiet as possible, it is a GM V6.
 
Now that I think about it, that Camaro has a 3.8 6cyl. Sounds pretty badass with open headers, with cherry bombs/glasspacks it's annoying. Pretty ballsy too when I went for a ride in it.
 
The 3800 isn't nearly as terrible as the 60deg motors.

Still sounds like a tractor, but it doesn't sound TERRIBLE like the 60degs.

Yeah I kind of like the sound of it, but only with the open headers. Otherwise it's too muffled to be appreciated. Much rather would have a V8 loud than a 6. Most people would I'm sure.
 
Bah, anything gm and v6 should be kept quiet. They have a very distinct sound that is terrible by nature and I don't really know why. The ford ones aren't much better and I've heard a glasspack on a 3.0 and it was painfully bad.

I heard one on a 4.9 straight 6 from Ford and it sounded ok, but wasn't great.

My friend has a 300 straight 6 f150 with one and I'd call it ok as long as your not piping it up all the time. Honestly the gm ford and dodge are the reason the v6 i can't stand v6's. Bad reliability low performance and awful sound.... Hmmm I'll get something else. The euros and Japanese do it right however.
