Going to Canadian GP '03!! I need help!

Hey people, me and my friend are going to the Canadian GP in Montreal in June '03 and I have already figured out the plane tickets, hotel etc. But does anyone have any idea as to how much tickets will cost?

I need to know, and I know that Jordan went to the USA GP so he should know.

Anyways, I am very excited and I can't wait. I will be counting the days until then.

Well, I just typed "Canada Gand Prix" into Yahoo and got the official site straight away. Prices are $415 for Gold, $340 for Silver and $185 for Bronze, all prices in Canadian dollars for three-day passes.

That's the information you can get off the web site. Now for the information you can get from someone who's already been there:

On the web site, the stands are numbered. Only the stands right in front of the pit complex are gold, so you won't really see anything special there. OK, so you'll see the pits and the start, but otherwise you're gonna sit there for 90 minutes watching the cars whizz past you. I would absolutely say that it's not worth the extra money.

The stands you want to go for are, in my order of recommendation, 11, 15, 12, 24, 21. 11 & 12 are down at the loop at the end of the start/finish straight. You have a giant screen so you can see the rest of the track, and there's a natural amphitheatre here, and it's a great atmosphere. It is about the furthest away from the public transport access points though (there is a metro runs out to the track).

15, 24 & 21 are down at the hairpin at the opposite end of the track. There's usually some overtaking here, and often some drivers outbraking themselves during qualifying, probably more likely given the new one-shot format. 15 is about 75m from the track though, so if you go for this stand, you'll need a long lens for decent photographs.

Don't forget that Montreal is in the French speaking part of Canada, so the commentary is often in French, and most people will want to speak French to you.

On getting to the circuit: Take the metro. It is not possible to park unless you're an invited guest, and the run out to the track is hugely congested, so a taxi will cost you heaps of money. On the flip side, there are regular metro services that will cost you about $5 return. There are lots of trains, so the conditions aren't too bad, apart from on race day, where there are huge crowds. You're advised to sit and sunbathe for at least an hour after the end of the race, to avoid standing in a fairly unpleasant crowd. It's about a 3/4 mile walk from the metro station to the hairpin end of the track. Add about another 1/2 to 3/4 miles to get down to stands 11 & 12.

The at-track facilities are pretty good, although there's not much in the way of stalls selling decent merchandise - pretty much Ferrari dominated.

And remember, always cheer for the BAR that isn't being driven with the guy with the Union Jack on his head!

Hope that helps...

i think Gilles summed it up pretty well... :D

there's a good chance i'll be there too, maybe we could meet somewhere, and i could show you around?

Will you be at the track on Friday and Saturday? I used those two days at the USGP to view the cars and corners from almost every single angle (you can still listen to the commentators to find out what kinds of times the drivers are putting in). And then, on race day, I relaxed above the first turn with a perfect view of a large video screen, so I could see the racing action no matter where it happened on the track. The TV screens are definitely something to keep in mind when purchasing your tickets!

every year i went i was there the whole weekend. I had paddock passes 2 years ago, which is always neat. :) like i said, i'm not sure if i'll be there... i already have assured tickets (thanks, boss!), but if the season is shaping to be like last year's, i'm not gonna go waste my time there.

You guys kick so much ass!!

I am a pretty new F1 fan and I haven't been to many big events like this.

I live in Calgary Alberta Canada which is across the continent from Montreal so I really need to get my **** together.

It will be bloody fun and I am going to go for Grand stand 11-12 if I buy the tickets now I shouldn't have any trouble with availability I assume?!

For anyone who has actually gone to this event as a tourist to Montreal, is there a semi-cheap hotel you can suggest?

You shouldn't, but the longer you wait, the less chance you have of getting decent tickets.

Says the man who ordered his Australian GP tickets on the day the FIA Press Release came out confirming the calendar!

Err, no, sorry. It was our honeymoon, and we spent a sh**load!

I am now uncertain if I am still going. The people I was going with have decided it will cost too much, and they barely even watch F1 on TV. So unless I go by myself, I have a low chance of going. My friends still say they will, but they are really second guessing it, and trying to talk me out of it.

That's a shame. You should try and go on your own if you're still up for it though. It sounds like there are going to be a few GTP-ites there.

jordan, i was there too! you were in j stand? me too! I saw satos failed move on hhf i think it was. That was very entertaining. also coughed up some of yoongs minardis smoke.

I must have done 10 miles of walking that weekend. the first two days and the first part of day 3 I also saw everything from the infield. The 360 challenge was great because most of the drivers were untalented rich people. they all crashed into eachother, lol!

Anyway, i think the tickets were $80usd for the stand seats, and $20 for the other 2 days. Not sure though. Well worth the money. I am planning on going next year as well.

If you don't really care that much abput where you stay, cross the river from the actuall centre of Montreal. There is quuite a few hotels like the Best Western and others like that. Plus you may get a free Continental breakfest!!!!!

Anyone going to Montreal on GP week-end should book their rooms as early as possible because most of the people in attendance are from out of town. Try the smaller chain hotels like "Days-Inn" and the like. Don't worry about speaking french most of Montreal is billingual (english/french).The further east of Montreal you go the less english is spoken. Downtown is no problem. Have fun the bars are open until 3:00 am and the women are EASY. I live about 60km S/W.

I want to go, but I don't know if it's too late or not. I want to sit in either section 11 or 12, but all the good seats are probably gone by now :(
