YES, this is just what the market needs.

Hopefully this will bite Apple's and Microsoft's rear-ends and force them to keep up.

Wow, how much hair does that Sergey bloke have? - he reminds me of a young Liza Minelli.

No doubt I'll get stick for this but it seems yet more pointless stuff that we have no need for but will no doubt lap up. I love gadgetry but this stuff riles me for some reason. Why do people feel the need they have to be contactable, online and locatable at all times? Why also are the developers of these things always seemingly the people who have no need for them - really, when was the last time Mr Horowitz was asked to go for a pizza by a girl called Lexi? And how many people use more than 30% of the features on a current 3G mobile? I'd love to know. No matter what new gadgets come out, as soon as you buy one you'll be bored within weeks and want something else. Maybe I'm just bitter towards technology at the moment - my Xbox just died :(

Sounds cool but your going to need a slick phone (maybe one that runs windows mobile) to get it to work!

Basically it aint going to work on my K750i!

10 million dollars! lets all get together and dev one on gtplanet!

It's impressive, and I don't doubt that someone(s) will come up with some pretty novel uses of the platforms capabilites... but personally, I don't understand the need to have a handheld communications device with 3d acceleration.

It comes down to convenience, it looks like Google is still trying to achieve what they said they would with Google maps feature of being able to "virtually" see some place before going to it. That 3d view for example. Other things maybe for multitasking like I do on my touch now. Either way, if it's a PDA/phone device without the bad stigma of a PDA and that intuitive of an OS this will definitely be a winner over anything else. Even an iPhone.

What are the two phones in the video?

I could have sworn it said somewhere on the net what the phone it is but most sites are just saying its an unbranded phone similar to a Motorola Q, looks rather nice.... Google G-Phone!

EDIT - Yeah it s Google produced prototype - http://www.news.com/2300-1037_3-6230132-1.html

O Snap!

Some of you may know that I'm kinda-sorta in the market for a new phone to replace my current RAZR, and I've been looking into BlackBerry products quite heavily. However, I've kept my ear to the floor on the 'gPhone' and I think I've found the alternative... I'm definitely waiting for this.

The maps feature, adapted to any phone, will be infinitely helpful when traveling, and I really like what appears to be a simplified way to communicate via IM clients and presumably gMail (by which I have two accounts).

Apple and Microsoft are both likely a bit scared at the moment, and if the rumors that Google is partnering with Sprint here in the US for the phones is true, that Apple/AT&T thing just seems downright stupid in the end...

I'd personally care to disagree, out of personal experience I'd rate Sprint much higher than AT&T and Verizon (the two largest carriers in the US). Their plans are cheaper, my calls are dropped far less frequently, and I've had nothing but a positive experience with their customer service.

Given that Sprint is largely business-driven, matching Google with that would only make sense. It would allow businesses to better design and apply their own applications, likely keep costs down for larger contracts, and ultimately benefit the "average" consumer with faster speeds and cheaper prices.

Plus, CDMA and 4G FTW... I can't stand that whole GSM thing. Worst. Reception. Ever. And do I even have to mention the EDGE network?

I understand and sympathize with exactly what you say. But there is one big reason to have things like this at your fingertips: Time is valuable, and people want results and answers and gratification right now. That's a really compelling reason for adults that have lots of work and stuff to do on weekdays, and little time for anything pleasurable, except in small in-between moments of life.

That said, I still use an old Motorola V180 phone, I've never text-ed anyone in my life, never had any need to take to send camera phone pics, and have never downloaded a ringtone or any other phone-based content.

Yeah, Sprint says they use Verizon's towers but I'm sorry, Sprint ≠ Verizon

Should be the other way around, Verizon is using Sprint's towers in most locations had always been my understanding.
