Im Completely new to gt and fairly new to driving sims in general I got a few questions if you don't mind to helped get started.

1. Does anybody here ever win with a controller and automatic gears? I tried some setups I found here for daily races and was winning a fair bit with auto/controller but now daily races can't be tuned I find it impossible to win.

2. Any advice about going to manual? I tried a few times to switch but I find it hard to know what gear to go down to?

3. What's best traction control to set and how does it work? I read somewhere it' good to master the traction control does this mean change It during the race?

I'm having fun with the game but it is a little frustrating never being near 1st place, I thought the tuning cars helped and started to enjoy it more but they have fixed tuning now.

Thanks in advance and any other tips that you think will help me out is much appreciated

You can do it, just practice - consistency is key. People do win with AT and controller :)

There's a little red flashing number next to the gear indicator which advises 'suggested' gears for corners. Generally I find myself using one gear higher than suggested once I get to know a track, but as a guide use the number it says.

Depending on race class I run without traction control, but if you need it then I'd set it to 1 or 2 depending on the race class. This allows a bit of a slide without you ending up spinning. You will be faster if you learn to modulate your accelerator 'pedal' useage though.

EDIT: Open the quote, I've replied to your questions in bold :)

Also, there may well be some races where they re-enable tuning, it's just to mix it up and keep it fresh. A bit of practice will help a LOT and work on consistency. There's a thread on here somewhere about learning to use manual gears, give it a read and most importantly - don't give up :)

You will get paired against faster and slower people as time goes by, but I often finish higher than my qualifying times say I should because I'm more consistent and make less mistakes - consistency is king!

I’ve won quite a few races using the DS4 and auto gears, it’s always been my set up as I’m too stupid and lazy to learn manual.. with me it’s just racing the tracks I know well so it’s just practice I guess..

I race with a controller and I've won my last 3 races :). I do race MT but sure people can win with DS4 + AT. It all lies in practicing the best line and breaking points, knowing when you can go full throttle and learn the nuances of the track :)

Regarding the correct gear to go down to, just listen to the revs, forget about gear number and just keep her singing. This applies to real life sequential boxes on track too for me at least.

True, but hard when you're first starting out in a manual.

Best thing to do to ease yourself in is to take a lower N-class car (N200, N300 etc.) as they rev slower and go slower so you can concentrate on the gears. Eventually it'll become second nature to shift when the engine pitch is low or high.
