Disagree, buy GT as it's better gameplay.

It depends what you want: GT2 definitely has more variety (tons more cars from all parts of the globe) but the graphix aren't as good. GT1 has better graphix, but it's heavily oriented towards Japanese cars, with a few Americans and British autos thrown in. I was intrigued with it for a couple months, but moved on to GT2. I been playing it with my housemate since March now and I'm still addicted!

Also, I think GT2 is easier for a beginner to get into, though the number of cars and races can also be a bit overwhelming. It's easy to win a lot of races if you've got some experience, and the license tests are way easier. GT1's Sunday Cup is easy as hell, but from there on up it can take some mad skill at times. Hope this helps.

GT. dust off the old PS1 console, and the original controller thats color matched it (w/o the analog). visit the roots before entering the game that youll be addicted to for months to come. its what im doing right now until it comes out. :sly: old skoo

However, GT is easier to progress in than GT2 without having to run the same old races over and over again. I find the lack of prize money in GT2 just makes the game damm boring, you either have to get a cheat so that you have too much money, and then winning money and prize cars is boring, or you have to race the same cars over the same races after doing minor modifications in order to get enough money to actually do a decent modification. The game play in GT is better as well, when you finally do completely modify your car, including race body, then you easily out run most of the oppostion, unless you enter the next level of racing. So you have something top aspire to!

I don't find GT2 boring at all! I find the lack of prize money to be a good thing, in that it simulates a struggling driver trying to earn cash with a crappy, barely-modified car. It makes me try that much harder. But that's just me. I would have gotten bored with GT2 if I earned a million dollars in my first month like I did when playing GT1. GT2 has tons more to explore, but as I said it can get overwhelming. But whatever. Just my opinion.

GT, it has a high framerate mode, and turbo lag, what more could you want?

Agreed. GT1 does have turbo lag and a higher framerate. You can watch the front of your car as it does replays, and it has qualifying laps, too. It's got a lot of things GT2 doesn't, BUT GT2 has a hell of a lot more cars, more races and race series! There's more to explore. But I like 'em both. Neither of them sucks, and believe me, I've seen plenty of playstation games that just suck.

I think I'll go with GT2 because of the more assortment of cars, how could GT1 possibly have better graphics then GT2?

GT1 has better graphix because there are less cars and less races in it, and therfore more memory available. (I think GT1 only utilizes 75% of the playstation capacities, GT2 is nearly maxed). Also, as we all know, GT2 was made in sort of a rush. When they originally made the 2nd game, they were trying to get it out in stores before the Christmas '99 season. If you get GT2, buy the 'greatest hits' version that you can get new. It's only $14.99 in my town. DON'T do what I did and get this game from some loser on e-bay. I wound up getting an early version of GT2, and after a couple weeks the infamous 'garage bug' kicked in and erased all my cars!

It's good you're getting GT2 before GT3 or GT4..this way you can see where it all started sort of!

I found myself bored with GT1 compared to GT2; frustrated at the lack of varied competiton, mostly. The AI's definately tougher in GT1, but there's less races, tracks, and cars. However, GT1 might be a better racing game, GT2 a better driving game. If you have $20 you could probably buy both copies.

I lean much more towards GT2 because I bought GT1 afterwards.

After GT2 came out, I put away GT1, and haven't played it since. True, some of the competition was better and there were very enjoyable races in GT1, but it still couldn't hold a candle to GT2.

In GT2, there were more tracks, more cars, and in particular a tonne of R modifiable cars. In particular I am very fond of the older cars, muscle cars.....

I purchased GT3, and would suggest I still play GT2 more, as I prefer what it has to offer.

So, GT2 would be my suggestion.

Years from now, you'll wish you'd bought both.

I know you say you don't want both, but if you have both you can at least fire up the original and look through its race menus to see the origins of some of the GT traditions, such as Sunday Cup, Clubman Cup, etc.

Plus GT1 Arcade Mode is truly a different game with an exagerrated physics engine. Completing it is a good way to waste a few hours when you don't feel like pursuing anything serious. And its two-player mode might be the most fun of all three versions (a simple selection of cars, with no garage load complications). But if you do want to race garage cars in two-player mode, that's available too (under Simulation Mode).

And, yes, GT1 Simulation Mode really can be completed in license-test order without entering any event twice. Which makes it a better game even if a worse simulation.

If I ever finish GT1 I will probably go back to GT2 but I've got a lot to do before I'll feel I've finished GT1--I'm just finishing up all used cars in its infamous Hard-Tuned series, and then there's the new cars to work through after that...

SportWAgen is right, they're both worth buying. Theyre both excellent , and they're both cheap nowadays. By the way, Sportwagon (in case you read this) your website is ****ing funny! I read about half the diary logs on it

Hmm.

You must have a lot of spare time or something. ;)

People have told me that that is basically a blog.

I now have that entire geocities site of mine on my PocketPC and I find it a very useful personal tool.

But, back to the topic...

If your really must get just one right now, get GT1 because it is becoming rare, while GT2 is more common in stores, both new and used. And so you should be able to buy GT2 at a later date.

YEAH I do have a lot of spare time, but I read most of those diaries at work, actually! I just think it's funny all that stuff about Crash Bandicoot and the make-believe race car drivers (Grant Tomaso) your wife and you have TVs side by side. ****in' good times!

 this make me wanna read.

Parnelli Bone Yeah
I too have read some of the diary logs and it made me wish I'd kept more of a record of my adventure through GT. Especailly the first time I played it, maybe 1 day I'll write down what I remember of those first games. I do wish you had explained more how you managed to get the Corvette '67 for GT as that is what I am working on now. Still I've got some code so maybe in a day or two I will have resolved the problems.

Cheers for a good read.

Yeah, it is a good read! I kinda wish he explored GT2 a bit more...seems like Sportwagon just got right into the fast stuff. It would be cool to read about him getting into the slower cars, too. Believe me, there's a lot of story right there!

Yeah, I did lose my compulsion to note actual progress once I got to GT2.

After that my log entries tended to be only GT1 Enduroes, or GameShark info, with occasional other game reviews.

I do have detailed game logs for almost all my games.

http://www.geocities.com/gt2toxs/gt/logs/

But, true I never did GT2 in real "non-cheating" mode.

http://www.geocities.com/gt2toxs/gt/logs/gt2-proper.txt

got hardly anywhere at all, did it?

I like doing "100 day GT1" games better. I have several of those, although after completing them I usually keep playing for a while, trying various things, so the logs rarely actually stop at day 101.

http://www.geocities.com/gt2toxs/gt/logs/gt1-tuned.txt

Is the game I am currently playing.

Everybody seen?
