Race report for Spa on Sat Night, McLaren, Asia-Oceania, GT1 (low A+)
Attempt 1:
Qualified 3rd with a a 2:19.0. All fairly close, a lot of people within a few tenths of that.
Race Start - a dumb penalty from running wide (McLaren is a dog on cold fronts and a full tank, understeer everywhere). About lap 9 there's light blue on the radar. People dash into the pits, I think "why?" and stay out. Turns out sBinotto has been manning the weather radar, and light blue means knee-deep water across the track. Interesting. Anyway, with the McLaren floating down the mountain somewhere, I bail and swim back to the pit lane. Race over, 14th.
Attempt 2:
Qualified 4th with a 2:19.1. Again, all fairly close, most of the field doing low 2:19s.
Race Start - immediately lose 4th to a Ferrari that launched itself into T1. Fine, long race, and he's at least fast enough. Eventually we catch up to the BMW in 3rd and start fighting him for position. Both the Ferrari and I get past the BMW after a few laps but we stay close together, none of us able to get away.
About Lap 9 I enact the FMP (Ferrari Master Plan) and box for tyres and some fuel. When the others pit Lap 10 or 11, I've made the undercut work on fresh rubber, and am right on the back of the AMG in 2nd when he comes out of the pits. Get him in the slipstream down the first straight and off towards 1st. About lap 12 I catch up to the leading Nissan GT-R.
What follows is a terrifying 7 laps of slowly closing in on the back of it, trading fastest lap after fastest lap for a while. Meanwhile, P3 and P4 (AMG and Ferrari) have caught up to the back of us.
He goes a little wide T1 of Lap 20 and I get a better run, and overtake him after the first straight! Into P1! Then he's all over the back of me for the rest of the lap. We go side-by-side through the fast left at the end of the lap, and he sends it into the last chicane, but gets a poor line through the second part and I go back up the inside.
I finish 1st by 0.2 seconds, and the top 4 are all within about 0.8 seconds.
1st, 268pts!
