Grand Valley 300KM in a BMW M3 Race Car

After an extended hiatus away from GT4, it's time to get serious again :) I'm back from University, working the third shift, and my only other obligation is my girlfriend...so that means any time I'm not doing ( :sly: ) either of those, I will be DEDICATED to this game!

Since my first run-through of GT4 was mostly B-Spec (what an idiot I was), I restarted my game. I'm about 36% of the way through the game now with some of the harder stuff out of the way (Mission 34, anyone?), and I'm really excited to A-Spec all the endurance races! Maybe I will work right down the list of enduros, but Grand Valley definitely sparked my interest. I'm not necessarily going for all 200 point races since I'm not sure I have enough racing talent (yet) to accomplish such a feat! We'll just see what happens.

My ride of choice for my first enduro was the BMW M3 GTR Race Car '01. The only modification to the car was to add 110 ballast weight and purchase R1 front and rear tires. No oil change (even though it had 0.0 miles) and otherwise stock. The field looked like this:

Nissan MOTUL PITWORK Z (JGTC) '04 Pitted every 15 laps
Opel Astra Touring Car '00 Pitted every 15 laps
Nissan PENZOIL ZEXEL GT-R (JGTC) '01 Pitted every 15 laps
Toyota au CERUMO Supra (JGTC) '01 Pitted every 15 laps
Opel Calibra Touring Car '94 Pitted every 12/13 (?) laps
BMW M3 GTR Race Car '01 Pitted every 15 laps

121 A-Spec points. I knew right from the start that my only real competition would be from the MOTUL. Boy, was I right!

Lap 1 consisted of me passing everybody but the MOTUL and trying to find a line for this track with this car. I'd like to note that I pretty much did this race cold, having not played GT4 more than an hour in the past year, and this being the FIRST enduro I had run since GT3. That being said, this race was riddled with my car getting caught in the sand/grass and losing precious amounts of time. A notable screw-up was in lap 7: I was up by about 20 seconds on the MOTUL when I got into the grass and totally lost control of the vehicle. By the time I was back on track, I was only 8 seconds ahead :nervous:

I gained time on the MOTUL when my tires were cold, PERFECT, and then getting into the red, so in theory I should've smoked him by at least a lap! As previously mentioned, the frequent off-road excursions made this race one to remember.

Now, I'm not sure if anybody plays GT4 on a PS3...but I strongly suggest you do not!! Despite the overheating problems that plague the machine, I have an interesting story: On lap 54, when I was about 25-30 seconds ahead of the MOTUL, my wheel completely stopped responding!!! I couldn't pause the game or do anything, and it just so happened to be on turn 1 when I was cruising at about 160 mph! I had to jump out of my chair, unhook the USB cable from the PS3, wait for the wheel to calibrate itself, then it took me forever to get out of the dirt  By the time I had everything under control again, I was down by about 10 seconds with only 6 laps to go. I was really worried, and REALLY peeved off with the entire situation, because it seemed as though my two hours of racing was going to be for naught :( but I passed the sucker on lap 59 and managed to take the checkered flag :dopey: results are as follows:

BMW M3 GTR Race Car '01 - 1:56'54.688
Nissan MOTUL PITWORK Z (JGTC) '04 - 1:57'01.017 (only 6.5 seconds behind! )
Opel Astra Touring Car '00 - +1 lap
Nissan PENNZOIL ZEXEL GT-R (JGTC) '01 - +1 lap
Toyota au CERUMO Supra (JGTC) '01 - +1 lap
Opel Calibra Touring Car '94 - +3 laps

All in all, it was an exciting albeit troublesome race. I know I'm really tempting the fates playing this game on a PS3 which obviously has some troubles...so let's hope nothing happens on those 24h enduros!! Well anyway, thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed yourself at least a little bit :) this is my first write-up by the way, and I hope to continue very very soon!

Welcome back to GT4 and GTP! Sounds like you're willing to plunge right in. Please do make more race reports. Some items of information I always like to see are your fastest lap time, and your average lap time over the whole race.

I can remember that my fastest lap was 1'51.358 or so, and I have no way of finding out my average lap time. I'll be doing the Laguna Seca enduro over the next few days, hopefully near 200 A-spec points.

Good report - I/m not sure you can blame the PS3 for the wheel problem - I have had the same thing happen several times with my PS2 - from memory I was able to pause the game with the regular controler.

Good call :) I will have to remember to do that. Except it will be a bit harder with the ps3 since you can't really plug the controllers in. Whatever, I'll just keep them on. Thanks for the advice.
