hey is it worth it to buy the new Ge-force 4 ti 4600???, or in fact any geforce 4, rather than a now cheap ge-force 3 which preforms as good as the low end 4 but CHEAPER!!!!

If your looking at the new GF4's, wait until shortly after august when you can expect prices to drop drastically. Nvidia will have their new GPU's out then, that are speculated to out-perform the current Ti4600, which then makes them obsolete...:)

The other day I bought a GeForce 4 MX400 64MB DDR for $99.

Great card, great price.

 Hey! Wassup there Alt? Long Time no see! Wooh, hey...wow..cool...

So yeah, for $99 dollars? That's a deal, especially with the new chipset! Sure beats the $359 price tag for the 128 mb cards..

Good to see you too!

Yeah, there's a local parts shop that has dirt cheap prices. I wanted to play the new game Morrowind, but my P3-550 wasn't gonna cut it with its 32MB TNT card. So, $600 later I'm running a brand spanking new 1.53 GHz AMD Athlon XP 1800, 512 MB DDR RAM, new hard drive and the GeForce.

/me wishes he wasn't at work.

 It's funny how a little entertainment can cause a full system upgrade. Check out the thread I started in the PC Gaming forum on Morrowind. :)

BTW - when your in the game, press the "~" button to bring up the command console. I found that if you type "help" at the console prompt, it will list all the commands accepted by the console prompt.

Have fun!

Well, it all depends on what type of performance you are looking for.

Nvidia did a little playing with the name of the GF 4 that might irritate people. The GF4MX cards are actually below the GF3ti200 in the product line, and do not support any of the new DX8 effects. Then comes the GF3 like, starting with the 200, then the straight 3, up to the ti500. Then comes the GF4 4200, 4400, and 4600 cards at the top of the line. And apparently Nvidia will make another improvement to the card in August. ( ).
It all depepnds on what you are trying to do, and unless you are doing high end gaming, the GF4MX cards are very powerful cards, especially for the money. (Plus they add in a few extra features that the others don't have such as iDCT support for DVD decoding (only in the GF4MX - aids the cpu in decoding DVD movies)
Enclosed, I've thrown in a screenshot of Morrowind that features one of those DirectX8 effects. The water is done with an effect called Pixel shaders.

Don't feel too bad, vipe...I bought a GeForce 2 Ti just a few months ago for $149...and that was a decent price at the time!

Not compared to me, no. ;)

I still like the GF2 tho. It doesn't do all of the neat DX8 tricks, granted. But how many games actually take advantage of it? All I know is that I can run Black & White at 1280 x 960, full detail, 32 bit color at a silky smooth framerate. It makes me happy... :)

Right with you there - I'd love a new one, but the GF2 in there at the moment runs the force-feedback wheel with Colin McRae 2 and Grand Prix 3 just fine (well, GP3 is fantastic, actually)

cool, you guys mite not understand this but with a ge force 4 ti4600 128 mb, u can run a ps2 in a computer, i thougth of this cause ps2 is only 128 mb! the graphics card can take it! and if you dont think its possible, some people are already working on it, kinda like water cooled puters, or puter with n64 playing compatibility, (not emulation)!

Anyone know if it's safe to overclock the G4s?

The driver has the option built right in. Memory speed, and core speed...so tempting to crank those up.

Just be careful when your putting on those water cooled heatsinks to keep the GPU cool. A lot can happen to a perfectly good card when your trying to *Tweek* it.. ;)

Actually the PS2 only has 40 megs of ram. It's a 128bit processor though. It's also not about the power, because the PS2 is an odd bit of business to try and emulate. It lacks the power that the Xbox has to bring graphics to the screen, but interanally it Womps the other consoles in terms of FLOPS (floating point operations) With no API (like OpenGL, or DirectX) it can basically do anything that the programmers can think of, and that's what the extra power is used for. It also makes it very difficult for a Pentium or AMD to emulate because literally every game can have an entirely different API to emulate. I'd say the Xbox is a good bet, as is the Gamecube (Probably Macintosh first for various reasons) but the PS2 is going to be a major Emulation hurdle.

Ok I know this will sound like a stupid question, do I need to put a fan on the processor on my GeForce 2 MX400 64MB? The reason I ask is cuz this is the my first video card thats like this. Most of the video cards I had before were either onboard or ****ty 8MB video cards or less.

Lots of emulators work, I have an GB, and SNES emulator on my PC right now, and both work perfectly.

I've also had MAME, Genesis, N64, Turbogrfx, PS1 and a few others, and all of those worked quite well too. The Sega Saturn hasn't had much success though, and I know that they have the bios emulated for the Dreamcast and PS2. I hope the get them working to be honest, because it will allow me to play my old games (which I like to do now and again) without the hassle of hooking up older consoles.

:)

ya i have a gameboy on pc from long ago called(no ca$h GMB) remember that, and i cant get the psx on my puter to werk its called ePSXe.......
