Ford Mustang GT-500

The Ford Mustang GT500 Convertible is the successor to the Mustang Cobra convertible. Its supercharged iron 5.4-liter V8 will produce 475 lb-ft of torque and 475 hp--approximately seventy hp less than the 550-hp all-aluminum version of this engine in the GT supercar. That power goes through a six-speed stick and a solid rear end (no fancy independent rear suspension this time). Surprisingly, only eighteen-inch wheels will be offered initially--the same size that's optional on the Mustang GT--but keen Mustang fans will spot the unique rim design, more aggressive front end styling, and power vent hood. Ford spruced up the GT500 with a fabric roof (instead of vinyl), a leather-wrapped dash, and the basic Mustang interior is a pretty nice place anyhow. The GT500 Convertible goes on sale concurrently with the coupe in the summer of 2006 at a sticker price of less than $45,000.

Blazin's Note: While many people saw the concept verison this is what the production version will look like. I must say it's pretty cool looking and will be fast...very fast.

Looks really, really good. I think the front end is much better than in the stock version, mainly because there are no round lights on the grill.

It's gonna be fast but I wonder how it'll corner.

THAT is a fat car! I really like that! Looks like it would run you over seven times and then make a burnout in your brain, laughing all the time! Evil!

Don't you mean phat, fat means large in a chubby way.

Hmm...perhaps, but the styling does make it look a little chubby like. I think they should be able to get some good performance handling out of this thing, they'll just sacrifice the ride since people who buy this kind of thing wouldn't care.

Shelby gave "spiritual direction". As with most Shelby concepts, his participation was mostly philosophical and suggestion-wise, but it was mostly the SVT team (I think) that worked on this.

I like the coupe. Boo that they're releasing the convertible first, but market's market, I guess.

This car will be one of my dream cars if they can give it handling to match the power. I like the body modifications though. Nothing over the top.

Jon.
Hmm, i'm sure i've seen this before. Don't shellby have something to do with it?

You've seen the concept verision which is almost identical to this, the GT-500 pics were released last night a 12:01 EST. Yes Shelby did help with it.

Poverty
It looks to plain for the power its got. Im also sceptcle about how it will handle.

It'll handle just fine, once again you have to be skeptical about a sweet AMERICAN car.

Any word on pricing/Power?

I heard the SVT Team wanted the 500 to stand for Horsepower/Torque.

Good timing though, by the time the Challenger/Camaro make it out, they will have GT-500's on the road, a freshened base GT, and possibly a GT-350.

Oh I hope they do a lighter, handling focused GT-350.

The word is that its the Ford GT engine, which is what 500hp? So I'm guessing that's what'll be, damn this thing will run with the Z06 and Viper if it has that kinda power.

550hp althought they will probably detune it slightly. Whats happening to the shelby cobra? They should build that to compete with the Z06?

The Ford GT engine puts out about 550Hp.

As for this, looks nice, not alot of difference to the Concept in terms of styling.

I wonder how this thing looks in "Eleanor" colors, and the Coupe in red without the stripes.

I was kinda hoping for 500/500 for torque and power. But 475 isn't that bad either. :D A 475hp RWD coupe for less than $45 000 sounds like a bargain!

Wait, isn't the $45,000 for the Convertible version?

I remember them being very specific about wanting the coupe at $40,000.

I can also hope that the 475/475 was for the droptop, and the coupe will have some added grunt...or that it's just them calling it low, and those are actual RWHP numbers.

I have seen a few new mustang with GT style stripe a while ago
is there an option to add stripes when you buy a new mustang?

anyhow, good to know they finally put the GT500 in production 👍

... If this is a sign that the American Pony car is alive and well, I'm all for it!

I have to say it is a very nice car and I would consider buying despite my overall dislike for all things Ford. Power is nice, looks are great, but I am a bit dissapointed that there isnt much of a change in the interior to seperate it from the GT. Sure, the leather is nice... But couldnt they have changed the guages or added custom bucket seats?

Not bad I guess, not liking how they changed the rear lights back to the stock GT look. 👎 Would have really set it apart.

Well, 2200 Lbs=1000 Kilos.

3300 lbs=1500 Kilos

600 more lbs=about 300 Kilos (slightly less) so yeah, it's close to 1700 Kilos, probably higher though.

Hard to say if that will be the Coupe version or the Convertible though. Either way I'm hoping for a stripped down, near track ready, GT-350 myself.
