GT Academy '13 regions?

No word on that yet, All we know is that there's 5 weeks of racecamp this year compared to last year's 4. We don't know what the combination of countries will be either, since last year they had Germany, Russia, then the rest of Europe, then the US.

Could be completely different, maybe four weeks of combined country regions like the European one last year, or 5 single countries. We just don't know. Participation of countries depends on Nissan presence and willingness to put up the money.

If Australia did make it in though, I wouldn't be surprised. It would be cool to see an "Oceanic" arm open up starting with Aus/NZ. Then later on it could potentially introduce other countries nearby like Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. and who knows, maybe even Japan!

But if I was in control of it... this is how I'd sort it out:
1st week (only 2 or 3 chosen from each country at Nationals) -
West Europe:
UK, France, Spain/Portugal, Italy, Germany/Swiss/Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark (those last two are there to split the nordic countries between the two European divisions)

2nd week (same) -
East Europe:
Russia, Poland, Czech, Hungary, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Ukraine, Sweden, Finland

3rd week -
Oceania:
Australia, New Zealand

4th week -
South America:
Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Columbia, Uruguay

5th week -
North America:
Mexico, United States, Canada.

And we could hold two more alternate Racecamps 6 months after this Summer one to compliment South Africa and the Middle East (with more countries hopefully), Japan and South Korea!

But yeah, pretty nuts to consider all that's involved. This would be a long shot even after a couple years of super successful GTA's.
I like to dream though :D

In an ideal world I'd like to see one where everyone had their own national final, then regional finals in a similar way to what you said (with Canada actually ditching their competition laws which were apparently written up by Draco ), then finish with a world boot camp to decide an overall champion.

In reality I guess it's just Europe and US for certain, then a mix of (most to least likely after Russia) Germany, Russia, Middle East, Oceania and Asia, which PD and Nissan have somehow neglected so far.

The OPC have an FAQ of GT Academy and according to them the list is;

Q. Which countries participate in GT Academy Europe?
A total of seven territories involving 16 countries will make up GT Academy Europe 2013:– UK, France, Italy, Iberia (Spain & Portugal), Benelux (Holland, Belgium & Luxemburg), Central Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia & Hungary) and Nordic Europe (Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway).

There will be separate GT Academy competitions run in Germany, USA and Russia and other competitions may be announced.

Of course you can see some new countries like the nordic countries, and I guess we will have to see with regards to this, as this was posted just after the announcement.

Wow, i would love if Wardez words make it happen for South America, Australia, etc :(

I don't know why they say that it's going to be the biggest GTAcademy of all years and make huge expectation of countries that really diserve a chance. They have forgot that one of the greatest racer of all times was Brazilian?? Did they sound the name of Juan Manuel Fangio? Or thousands of actual racers at American Lemans, F1, etc.
Shame on NISSAN

Not wanting to bring up any type of hatred toward Sony and Nissan but quite frankly I am sick and tired of hearing preachy marketing from the said companies European marketing arms claiming that this is a global talent search when clearly it isn't. It's not even close at the moment.

No kidding!! Since when does North America only mean USA? What about Canada and Mexico? When do we Canucks get our shot?

Woohoo! Southern Hemisphere stiffed again. Thanks Polyphony!

I doubt that it's Polyphony's decision.

What I don't understand why they're not including at the very least Japan..

If I'm honest I'm rather depressed about the news.. Nissan is completely blanking a large portion of the world and wont give any word as to why.. but at least the demo will still be available - even if there's very little point to competing now I'll probably just set a gold lap time for whatever the reward is and then just mess around with the demo.

That gold lap time for the rewards they are hinting at will be effort ill-spent if they're only made available through GT6.

I am not planning on pre-ordering or buying the game at the rate at which they're going, let alone Nissan or Sony products in the future. The XBOX One, iRacing, other electronic and automotive manufacturers suddenly just got a whole lot more attractive in the space of less than 24 hours.

If you guys haven't seen already I've made some very honest posts on the Nissan, PlayStation NZ and Nissan Motorsport Facebook pages that are getting support from people despite the fact that PSNZ and Nissan have hidden these posts promptly on their public profiles:

https://www.facebook.com/NissanNZ | https://www.facebook.com/PlayStationNZ

Similarly I've started to use the #Uncool hashtag on Twitter to describe what they've just done with GT Academy here in New Zealand so far.

One person describing Nissan or PlayStation as uncool on Twitter probably won't do much but imagine if you've got the entire #uncool section on that social network littered with their brand names...that's something they can't ignore.

I'm not telling those of you who are disappointed with the current situation to hurl abuse at Nissan and PlayStation's respective points of contact. All I'm really saying is that we're collectively not screaming loud enough for them to take notice and if we continue to just whine here in GTPlanet we're likely going to get the same result we've been getting for the past 3 years.

This really is sad news, particularly because Australia has been an eligible country once in the past (see Dan Holland). I fear that us aussies won't even get the demo now. I'd really like to know who is responsible for selecting the regions. I hope it was out of Kaz's control.

"Not happy Kaz!"

There has been at least a GT Academy chance for Australia and New Zealand in the past which is more than Japan GT drivers have got. Considering that Japan is one of the most competitive countries on GT Academy TTs, and that Nissan and PDI are Japanese companies, I think they will be ones felt most hard done by in regions selected so far over the years.

I am quite grateful Nissan and Sony are still carrying on GT Academy Program. They could have quite easily have been done with it after getting a few drivers, instead they are said they will be expanding it even further 👍. It is probably the biggest investment in gamers there has ever been.

Agree with all your points Saidur. However that is very easy to say if you've had the luxury of being in a GT Academy eligible country since the contests inception back in 2008.

Re: The contests expansion - The only thing that all of us New Zealanders and Australians can really do is try to convince Nissan and PlayStation to bring it back here. The Japanese and Asian regions should definitely look into doing the same. Being fast is only half the story even if you're racing real cars 👍

What do you mean by 'selected', and by whom?

To be selected suggests that there is a list of applicants (in this case countries) whereby some are selected whilst others are denied. How about the countries taking part are those who wish to take part, and those not listed are those who decided not to?

Yes, it might be easy to say but you have to remember, quite a number of people entering weren't thinking of becoming a racing driver at all. Gives hope to people even in countries that not yet been in GT Academy. If UK is not part of GT Academy next year, or if next year they drop program for everyone, I will have no hard feelings towards Nissan or Sony.

I would think it would be selected / chosen internally by Sony / PDI and mainly Nissan for areas they want to target. Regarding countries deciding inclusion or not, Canada for example might have been in the plan for North America by Nissan but competition laws rules them out for now. For other countries not to be included which competition is legal to take part, I guess it goes down to cost and if they see the value targeting a certain country / region.

You know, one thing you guys forgot about is how there very well could be another gap competition in the winter like last year's Middle East and South African events.

Would make sense, especially since Australia/NZ are on opposite seasons. You never know.

Absolutely. However when somebody gives you a chance to become an international motorsport professional most people would jump at the opportunity to do so. "Hope" as far as I've seen is completely irrelevant to what Nissan and PlayStation are trying to achieve. Yes, good on them for being innovative enough to turn a crazy idea into something tangible and am grateful for having had the chance to participate in one of their national finals but that's really the source of all my current state of discontent.

When I qualified for the national final back in 2010 I was under no illusions as to how difficult it would be to actually win the trip to Silverstone. I only had a Logitech wheel and a PS3 during the Time Trial month while most of the others have had GT5 Prologue and driving related peripherals for a longer period of time to get an idea of what the format of the national final races would be like. In short I felt I had plenty more to give the contest had I been given another shot.

I'm sure the other 19 New Zealand finalists (and similarly the other 19 Australian finalists) have this similar feeling of unfinished business and plenty of other fast guys who were left out due to ineligibility back then. The difficult thing to get my head around - even if I know numerous possible explanations - is the fact that they brought it here 3 years ago and have not brought it back since while Nissan and PlayStation NZ are more than happy to say "we're just as innovative as our American and European counterparts" with nothing tangible like a GT Academy NZ/AU to show for it during that time.

Very true and this is probably the only thing worth hanging onto when it comes to forming a current opinion of Sony PlayStation and Nissan.

In saying this however, I will not hold my breath for an end of year GT Academy down-under. Three years is far too long to have done that and without the contest I will stay true to my word of not buying their products unless they offer better value than their competitors. Without an NZ/AU GT Academy, Sony and Nissan would have lost virtually all the value they've added to their current offerings over the past three years in my books and I'm more than happy to look at getting Samsung and Toyota products in the future.
