Couldn't find anything about this already on the forums.
I picked up a copy of this month's Top Gear magazine for a train journey today. They featured a small section about GT Academy - worth a read.
What is really interesting is this however:
"Sounds like a challenge for anyone thinking of having a shot at GT academy this year, a competition Darren (Darren Cox - 'Nissan's online guru') promises will be even bigger."
Edit: My opinion: I'm not sure how recent the source is from since they talk about being at the GT Academy UK final in London a few times in the article.
There would be no problem for Sony/PD to organise and pull of such an event - the money those guys have is unreal. The question is: Is there any point? GT5p has surely been out long enough now to not need any more publicity. And GT5 is still (speculation aside) a while off. I could only see them doing something like this if it really helped them to sell games - unless, perhaps, they're not driven completely by money?
