GT Academy Go-Karts

It's no secret that go-karts will probably be a part of the Silverstone, UK 5-day "boot camp." Per the videos on the GT site, it looks like they were a day 1 activity in 2010. Many drivers on this sub-forum seem to have some sort of go-karting experience. Since go-kart conversations seems to jack other threads from time to time, use this to post everything go-kart related.

- Any go-kart "training" related to GT Academy
- Past go-karting experience, including glory day stories (like when fix beat the go-karting champion of the universe by 20 laps)
- Meetings at local go-kart places (looks like there's already a San Diego go-kart throw-down amongst the many San Diegans, and some interest at F1 Boston and On Track Karting in CT).
- Trash talk about how bad you are going to smoke everyone in real go-
karts once you get to the UK
- Whatevers else...

Good idea blindside. I personally have never karted but intend to start now that I have a bit of extra spending cash.
Anyone in the DC area interested in meeting up?

I''m down in So MD and would be up for that notmychoise. Even though I didn't make it through to round 2, and I haven't karted since high school.

Could be fun.

Sweet! I just moved up to reston in september so I have no clue where anything is :D but I'm sure we could get somethin together.

come summertime NJMP has a first class karting facility and its not to far for you guys in Maryland. i have an extra kt100 to cruise around on while i run my rotax. The rentals are only 9hp hondas but still fun and the track layout is awesome.

Haha I have no intentions of waiting till summertime to get some track time :D
I'm trying to get my mr2 ready for a weekend at VIR or Summit point as well.

This place looks pretty cool for karts near DC

Hey - I'm down for both karting and TTs at NJMP. I promose to be gentle on your kart if you let me drive it...15hp w/ no shifter, right?

I usually run with COMSCC (we went to NJMP T-bolt for the first time last year), but I want to get an early day in this year. I think NASA is running lightning in April so I'll be around then most likely. We stayed at the "suites" above the garage - super nice facility all around.

Gentle? I'm never gentle lol (first race out ever and broken ribs banging over the curbs). I can't wait for them to reopen. Going to the Daytona 500 party on the 20th of Febuary. Its always an awesome time when there. Schedule of events isn't looking that great this year. I only live about 15 mins away so i'm there pretty much every weekend.

That's awesome. I've gotta get up there, if its april I might even have my car ready to drive up there.

^^ hahahahah.

I've been karting on and off since I was 9, starting in Southern California, then moving to Hawaii later on. Heres a little video of one of our club races on Maui. I won the championship there in the TAG class, although its no big deal since there are only about 8-12 people in the class. But still its a blast.

Also raced in a 9 hour endurance race in Las Vegas with a few friends from our karting club. Finished 2nd in our class: http://www.indoorkartingnews.com/news_info.php?n=532

As you can see there we were sharing the track with some famous drivers which was pretty cool; Tanner Foust, Raphael Matos, Jim Russel Jr.

Also, I had a Fixbywire-esque moment where former Champ Car driver Memo Gidley came over to Hawaii to to a sort of clinic on karting. The prize was a 3-day trip to the Jim Russel driving school. He chose me as the winner but I was too young at the time.

Blindside, we deffinetly should round up all the New England locals on here for a day at F1 Boston. Not sure how expensive it would be to reserve one of the tracks but it would certainly be a blast. 👍

I finished 5th in the 2009 IKF 4-cycle grand nationals. Was in 3rd but then halfway through the main I cracked a rib... It gets a little harder to focus when you're planning your breathes so your lungs can support your ribs through all the left-handers on a counter clockwise track haha. Still content with the result but would've loved that 3rd place.

I'm tio incompetent to figure out how to embed the video, but its gnarly.

Anyone in or around Chicago/Indiana; I'm all for getting some people together for an epic day or night of karting, unfortunately snow leaves us with indoor karting as our only option. Could be tons of fun, bunch o random sim racers show up at chicago indoor and lay down the law for a night. If we can get a handfull of us, I know a couple of pro openwheel drivers that have been talking about goin karting; Not 100% if they are in town at the moment but if so I could ask them to race with us. After spanking them in Forza2 and 3 they are both a little bitter and would jump at the chance to redeem egos.

I live in the city in Chicago. Last time some of my karting friends came to visit we went to an indoor karting place in Melrose park and it was a good time. I don't know of any other places but that was pretty fun. The layout wasn't technical at all and I was a few 10ths off the posted lap record in my second session.

Count me in though, I would go. Indoor karting track grip is usually minimal compared to racing on a purposed karting track, but still lots of fun and could be decent practice in the event someone had to jump in a racing kart without any real experience in it.

I did the Red Bull drivers search years back in CRG Rotax karts. I was in 3rd position in the main and got knocked out and didn't get a transfer spot to go race Skip Barber cars in Sebring. My bro went the next year and qualified at F1 Boston and went to Sebring. Karts are almost always used as a first round filter in any motorsports competition program, anyone who could potentially go should get some experience in advance.

Notmychoise, I was going to suggest Allsports GP. It's not too far from Reston, and indoors.

Contact me offline if you want to set something up. Although I live at the end of the earth, I'm usually up in or around No VA on the weekends.

Will do man, I've got a buddy at work who plays gt as well. Hopefully we can find some more folks.
CALLING ALL NOVA/DC/MD PEOPLE!!!!

Review of F1 Boston -

The facilities are very clean and "nice". The staff tries to be nice, but sometimes they don't know their stuff. They also make mistakes on stuff like league standings, endurance race timing errors, and even messing up the schedule (e.g. May 5th 2011 is NOT a Monday).

The tracks are short, and kind of boring by themselves. However, the elevation changes are pretty cool. When the 2 tracks are combined, it's a great facility. The laps are nice and long (in the 37 second range), but only about 19-20 seconds when run separately.

On-track the "race officials" are equivalent to bad refs in other sports. They try hard (most of them part time workers), but they often miss bad driving, penalize good driving, and are very late with the blue (passing) flag.

The everyday patrons are a mixed bag - sometimes you'll get a good crew of people to drive with, but you can find sometimes that you'll be on track with someone 10s/lap slower than you and literally lap them every 3 laps. Sometimes people can show up and get super competitive (with no skill), and that can be frustrating...

Overall I really like the leagues and endurance races - they are much better organized, the talent is so much better than the arrive/drive folks, and it's structured competition which is always fun.

...anyway, I'm down to go whenever so let me know if anyone wants to meet up.

I'm definitely down for go karts! Give me a time and place and I'm there! BTW, I don't own one so make sure location has rentals.

If any of the guys in Vegas wanna head down to Pole Position sometime next week that would be cool.

Let me know if you're interested.

I'm in Northern Virginia. Arlington Area. I guess will probably be after the Round 3 rush!

Hell yah man! I'll pm anyone who's from around the NOVA/DC/MD area or surrounding areas and wants to meet up.

Just started kart racing on the local level last year. I have a box of engine parts and an engine that need my attention after this week.

The Cheef: I thought you were ineligible for GT Academy if you had 2 years of national level karting experience?

I've done Karts before, but an issue with my ribs prevents me from enjoying them for too long.

Hopefully that's not going to be a problem. :nervous:
