GT Academy round 3 shifting phenomenon

Hi to everyone. I'm brand spanking new to the forum, but I bear bad news:

I've been racing ALL week to ensure a seat in the nationals. I keep hanging outside the top ten with no replays to watch (they where down til yesterday).
Needless to say, I was a bit surprised when I was able to view replays. Upon inital inspection everything seems in order. Then I heard the engine, a little off so I gave it my attention (I had raced Indy for 7 straight hours you notice these things).
Then the replay car shifted, er " power shifted." In my GT5 game when I up shift the accelerator indicator goes red (for a split second) selects the next gear, then speed continues to climb (yes I have the accelerator floored the whole time). With the top ten, no red on the indicator (unless they are at part throttle), no speed penalty, like it's a CVT or something.
This is a huge issue. That is an unfair advantage, however it's happening. I've looked in all my manuls for this " flat-shifting" method found nothing. I am running a DFGT, but I did try the controller also; same pause between gears. This is costing myself (and I'm sure others) at least 1 to 2 seconds a lap. GTP Forums was instrumental in round 2, so if something is going on I see this forum as the people who can make things happen. Of course if it is something in my setup, please let me know quickly, to keep from embarrassing myself further.
I have called and written Sony on this issue and am waiting to hear back. If you don't believe me, watch the replays, the accelerator never goes red when they grab a higher gear.

I found that if I press the horn button while shifting made for a much quicker and effective shift. That has to be the reason for the aliens' collective fast times.

LOL! :) Not the response I expected. I am just trying to figure out why this is happening. I noticed turbo gauges spiking full also on Eifel, doesn't do it for me, even if I lay on the horn.:)
When I raced DIRT, I noticed that it ran faster on the PS3 than on the XBOX; better, faster processor. I wonder if the new slim ps3 runs GT5 faster than my old 60g. I know you don't understand Choate and you think I'm full of it, your replay has no throttle lift upon shifting your accelerator stays blue unless you use half throttle, but mine is red everytime and I've got to wait a .1. If I were in your shoes I'd feel the same way. Just for the record, I don't think anyone is cheating, I just see something that might be a software issue and am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue.

Choate is a CLASSIC mASShole - anyway, what you are seeing is probably some funniness with the replays, not with the driving. I use a DFGT like yourself, and I'm pretty much near the top. No shinangians here.

Thank you blindsidefive0. Like I said before, I don't think anyone is doing anything dishonest. :) Are you running a newer PS3, older?

The oldest one ever. I got it from a friend of mine who was a pro gamer and got one of the first PS3's.

That's cool, good to hear someone has a PS3 as old as mine with no issue. Maybe your right and the replys are goofy, maybe I didn't lay into the horn hard enough:). It's just, I watch the reply notice I hold a better line, get on the throttle faster, have a higher exit speed than the reply and I am slower. At a loss:indiff:.

At Eifel exit speed is important, but it's not everything. Your "better" line might be a better (safer) HPDE line, but you may be losing time upon entry or not carrying enough speed though the corner. Even though the GT-R is an absolute monster, to be at the top everything must be considered a "momentum" car where entry and mid-corner speeds matter. At Eifel, pretty much the entire track is one big set of sweeping corners.

Dont forget that the sound (at least of the Tuned Z) in replays is also sort of buggy, sounds nothing like it does when you are actually driving it.

I noticed Choate's was a little boggy compaired to time_attack's, which sounded like it was on steriods. I have given some reflection to replys being goofy and just can't get my head around that. Every replay I've ever downloaded has been good and accurate, never been a short coming of PD.

Have you watched a replay of your own driving back-to-back with say Choate's driving and noticed that there was a difference? Sometimes in the replays it shows things that are a little off - for instance it looks like you brake later than you actually do in the replays.

Choate is right and he's not joking. The horn changes something in the code and you flat shift a little faster for whatever reason. you have to press it quickly enough though, most of the time you can't even hear it. I'm 2nd overall, I'd know :)

Just kidding obviously. Really though, replays are definitely NOT accurate. Tiny differences but they are there. I know for sure the braking is delayed, and if I remember right the shifting sounds are off too. There is no horn trick or any other trick. These guys are just FAST. I mean my god, have you looked at the leaderboard? I better stop typing and go do some laps

Blindside said it. Watch your own replay...

Actually, based on past GT releases (from GT1 through to GT4P) the idea of using the horn button to shift quicker could be very plausible. Back then it was the reverse button.

And I'm not kidding.

So I cannot imagine that the "fast guys" are using an automatic transmission, but why is it that between the upshifts there seems to be no lag. I have watched the "top time" replay from Eifel - then watched my own(waaay of the pace), but when I upshift the throttle trace blips red momentarily while it does not on the leader's replay..... What gives? I know it's a fraction of a second, but those can add up to a tenth or three around this circuit..

Yep. Like others have said, replays are pretty buggy. Sounds flutter, inputs are delayed, etc., which is all fully understandable when you consider it isn't an actual replay video; rather, GT5 stores all the lap data and recreates the lap from that data (which also makes uploading replays a pain).

But here's what I don't understand: If a replay is just stored lap data, why the hell don't we have more control with the replays?! Such as rewind, fast forward, and use the same button to pause and start in the data logger <<< That is so damned annoying when you only want to advance it a few hundredths. And would it be too much to ask for ghost overlays on the replays? I mean, you can overlay the telemetry in the data logger, so why not just add the image of the car while as well?

Could be that downloaded replays are compressed and your personal replays are not?

Could be, could be. I "exported" both and they are within 1-5 KB in file size, so there IS a difference. Time to get back to "trying to be fast" for me, rather than being worried about this lil deal. Wish I could focus for 2:17 seconds.. :)

+2 I wish that was an option. I expect it will eventually be implemented but that is exactly what I think.

As for the shifts I have always noticed the red blip, the same one that occurs when TC is active. It is just a sign that your car is interrupting the throttle position.

I have a g27 and I can't use the clutch in the academy.

Alright guys, I ran a lap and watched my own replay; the replays are jack. Engine note changed, I apeared to be flat shifting, you name it my own replay did it. A belated congrats to all those who advanced and sorry too if you thought I was trying to take away from your skill. I just saw something weird and PD should've done a better job on the replays. Like I said, it amazed me considering they did great on all their past GT games, guess not this one.
