Greetings Virtual Motorheads!
My sincerest appologies, if I am failing to follow accepted protocol, in posting my queries here. I was unable to find the appropriate info regarding my current situation, so if this post is moved by the Lord Overseer, I shall understand.
I am currently into my third attempt at winning the GT Allstar series, and am frustrated to the point of strong drink! I have driven the venerable Jag XJ9, 1988, and have been thwarted twice. This particular car is a strong contender on the first 4 tracks, and then I am beaten like a redheaded stepchild, by the evil Sauber Mercedes on the more technical courses. Fiddling and tweaking to th nth degree, only yields marginal improvement. This time through, I am piloting the Motul Z car and have had similar results. I do have to accept partial blame. I only have available the medium compound rubber so I churn up the tires at a prodigious rate. Is there any way of saving this particular attempt or should I withdraw, equip with better tires, and start again. Or am I on a fools mission?
I have but 3,000,000 credits, and have not seen a car to purchase that, on paper at least, would give a better result.
I am aging rapidly trying to vanquish this mission, much like Don Quixote tilting at 900hp windmills.
Any advice would sooth my injured ego,
I Remain
Frustratedly Yours
Fangio

Win Polyphony F1 in Nurburgring 24h or buy used special Nissan R92CP (day 694-700) for ~1,300,000cr. Black Mazda 787B is also good.

Have you been qualifying to get pole position? It definitely makes life a lot easier (under practice next to the enter race icon). If you can't get pole position you will definitely have trouble in the race. A word of warning - the AI will start running much faster (up to 8 seconds a lap?) when their tyres warm so it is best to only practice for a couple of laps or they may set an unbeatable pole time. The AI also run slowly during practice - they will be significantly faster during the race.

If your tyres have turned red by the end of the race that is bad. Two laps on red tyres is many lost seconds. Tyre wear is related to how you drive the car - smooth driving will extend tyre life which is much easier to do if you start from pole.

The car that will win this series easily is the Toyota 88C-V - hard tyres all round (there are many others but this one is easily obtained and can do the job). It is won at the El Capitan endurance - a fun race, takes only a couple of hours, and a wide variety of production cars can win (beware of the Elise as opponent).

Lastly - I'm not sure how long you have played GT4 - I had though only a short time; if so I would suggest competing in some of the series that use less powerful cars. The LM cars are a handful and require very good knowledge of the track in order to win. Just a suggestion, I could be way off the mark given your obviously long association with GT.

Good luck.

And once you've mastered it and you'd like a bit of a challenge (200 points) Try:
the BMW Mclaren F1 GTR (Hispeed ring, test course)
the Chaparral 2J, needs a bit of getting used to, but it's a great car.
the Nissan Fairlady Z Concept LM (Autumn ring !!, Sarthe & Green Hell)

AMG.

Also you could try, either of the Pescarolos' or the Mazda 787b. These aren't as powerful, but are far easier on the tires than the other LMP's and Group C's and easier to control imo. But you should be able to run R3 tire's on all LMP's and Group C's without a pit stop, except on Autumn Ring and the Nurburgring, you may want R2's on the back if you have alot of trouble with tire wear.

The biggest thing though, is practice, go to arcade mode and jump in the car you plan on using and practice the tracks. Be aware though that the cars will handle differently in arcade and GT mode because of suspension settings.

Greetings Glactic Hitchikers,
Once again your kind and knowledgable responses provide a veritible font of useful information! I generally qualify on the pole(although it took many days to realize I had that option, advanced years, diminished brain function). I think percahance I will attempt the El Capitan venue, as I have acquired a good number of uber performance vehicles, 104 at last count. I have a Megane that is an absolute hoot to drive, and has the roartiest exhaust note of any of the cars I have in my stable! Another possibility is a rather hoarish Subaru that is frightening in it's acceleration!
I cannot wait to take this advice and redeem myself and in the process, asuage my fragile ego.
Again, Good Sirs, my heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Now perhaps you might answer a perplexing question that has gnawed at me for many a year, and that is, why do we drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway?
As always,
I remain,
Your Grateful Servant

I don't think we'll ever find the true answer to that question Fangio.

It would be nice to know the what people were thinking when they named these things...

Now perhaps you might answer a perplexing question that has gnawed at me for many a year, and that is, why do we drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway?

When you're driving, you're on the way to/from parking. When you're parked, you're on the way to/from driving.

Et la.

I would presume, Good Squire Loon, that Famine is to Sir Jordan, as Merlin was to Great King Arthur. One does not achieve the title of Super Moderator, without demonstrating a wealth of knowledge on a wide range of subjects. Even his reply to my query, demonstrated that he has a mastery of the subtle nuances of our, at times, confusing verbage.
I for one, am impressed, and doth rest my weary head at night, in comfort, possessing the certainty, that Great Overseer, Lord Famine, is protecting us from the mundane ramblings of lesser members, myself included.
So carry on Lord Famine, I for one am humbled, and stand in awe of your vast and benevolent wisdom,
Yours Faithfully,
Fangio

I have to ask the obvious question here, why not just do GT All Stars with whatever car you used to win the GTWC?

If you do decide to win the Toyota 88C-V, might I suggest you use the Suzuki GSX-R/4 for the El Capitan enduro? Not because it's an easy win (which it is), nor because you'll get 200 A-spec points (which you will), but because the Suzuki is just an incredible pleasure to drive on that track.

Salutations Oh Ye Merry Band Of Speedsters!
It is with a joyous heart that I come before this esteemed assembly, to report my victory, at long last, in the Allstar contest!
After many false starts, frequent missteps, and the occaisional off track excursion, I was able to outscore the Evil Sauber Mercedes to claim ultimate victory!
While all of your suggestions were taken to heart, I confess that I could not bring myself to run the El Capitan endurance race for I find the race somewhat tedious. Blasphemey! I realize my opinion is but one on that particular venue, so be kind in your razor sharp responses.
The vehicle of choice, the venerable Motul Z.
Equipped with the hardest compound rubber, and the down force dialed all the way to maximum, I found that changing the gearsets, were all that was required to have a very managable race car.
The most satisfying contest was on the test course, where I was nose to tail with the Benzo, riding in the slipstream, inhaling exhaust, and generally having a most delightful time. Upon exiting the final turn, I employed the slingshot effect and tore past the Sauber like it was going in reverse!
I ended the series with 5 outright victories, 4 second place, and, I am most ashamed to have to admit this, a dead last at The Ring, due to a lack of attentiveness on two of the more technical spots on the track. Fortunately the Sauber experienced indignities of it's own ending with 2 firsts, 6 seconds, and a dismal, 2 third place finishes.
I am vindicated! I thank all of you for your kind input and interest. I look forward to the next contest with great anticipation and excitement
I Remain,
Your Humble Victor
