Many people consider Gran Turismo's engine sounds sound muffled like a vacuum cleaner sound. The reason this problem occurs is because polyphony has tried to create a different sound for each of the views of the car. Eg. The sound is worst when you use cockpit view, but gets better if you use hood cam or external view. In fact the sounds are pretty good when you watch replays using the default replay camera view. PD felt that internal views should have engine sounds muffled when you are inside the car. PD does not need to create a brand new sound system, they just need to combine all the sounds from the different views and have just one distortioned engine sound for all views.

From my experience, the engines all sound pretty good, with some sounding great, with simply a good surround sound headset. Before I owned one the sounds coming through the TV speakers weren't... good... but with the headset they're much more grumbly and nice.
