So how much planning goes into your car selections for GT2?

Do you follow the "unenforced" rules to the letter? (Italian cars for Italian Nationals; Wagons only in Station Wagon Cup for example.)

Use every last allowed bit of horsepower? (So it's usually an unfair fight?)

Do you keep the prize cars, or do you sell them for credits?

Run all the rally races with the Escudo?

Inquiring minds wanna know!

I'll use my 4th new game as an example:

First car: RX-7 Infini (rather popular selection)
Won all Sunday Cup and Clubman Cup races.
Took on FR crowd with ease.
Grand Touring, no sweat.
Pure Sports Car...not a problem.
Ran a few Japanese Natonals for kicks.
Beat all Tuned Turbo No.1 cars
Fully modded for GT300 series win.
Won about 8 rally races (including some Pikes Peak races)
quite a versatile car

Lotus Elan '90 (never raced it before)
Won all FF races
Won convertible events
Competent for last two British Nationals
Won a European Nationals race
Missed something special for an FF car

Trueno '85 (well, never used this particular AE86...)
Won all 80's events
Won remaining Pacific League races
Won Japanese National event (~197hp)
Won Apricot Hill 50-lapper
A fun car all-round

TVR Cerbera 4.2 (never used the most powerful Cerbera)
Won all GT-All Stars races
What a beast!

Toyota MR2 '86 (lost this car a while ago, never tired again)
Won all MR races (the last one took 6 tries)
Takes quite a work-out to beat the GT40

Audi A3 (Oops, thought it was 4WD)
Won all German Nationals
Won remaining European League races
Should have bought an S3...Doh!...but nice car anyways

Supra RZ '97 (had't given this car a fair shake)
Finally beat the GT500 series with this car.
Frustrating at first, but quite formidable.

Toyota 2000GT (took a while to nail this down in red, but worth it)
Historic Car Cup
Grandpa Trueno...Ferrari Daytona wannabe...I like it!

Camaro SS '69 (never raced it)
Muscle Car Cup
Was always a little partial to the SS my neighbor had a few years back...

Mini Cooper (shagadellic)
Won Kei Car races
Won Compact Car races
Won remaining British Natl's event
Fun box. Gotta be green.

Impreza Wagon WRX '95 (so many Imprezas, so little time)
Station Wagons Race
A few rally wins
As good as any Impreza, if you don't need 500hp

Nissan Sunny VZ-R '98 (the only Altima in the bunch)
Supertouring
Nothing special at first, but a wonderful car when fully tuned...9000rpm redline!

Ford Focus rally car (never drove it)
6 rally wins
Nice rally package

Suzuki Cultus (raced it maybe twice)
Pikes Peak Uphill -- Escudo Killer!
It took me about 8 tries...is quite possible win!

I wanted to follow two rules when playing my 4th game:
1. Race no cars you've ever used more than once or twice.
2. Sell all prize cars.

I did follow the "unenforced" rules, when I first ran them...now I'll run them with whatever I feel like just to re-win the prize car.

I usaully run underpowered cars, and win on suspension setup.

I keep the prize cars I like, even if I rarely run them (Spoon & Mugen for example...also the rare Nissan cars), and I'll keep the cars I win in Enduro's (Denso and 3000GT for example), but I'll sell the cars I've won over and over. I'll sell the Mugen NSX, but I kept the Mugen NSX '99 which has a differnent hood.

I run most rally's with the Lancer EVO I won from an Enduro, or the Xsara....or Escort Cosworth.

I usually buy cars from suggestion bye my fellow GT2'ers. I almost always follow a strict guideline, though, of how to buy cars (I don't anymore because I'm good at the game, but my first and second time through I did it).

First car: FTO GR. Wins all the FF races, and looks good to boot.

Second Car: Lotus Elise 190. Starts under 200 hp, and can win all the races up until ~591 races.

Third Car: Atlantique 400 GT. Though it's MR like the Elise, it can clean up what the Elise can't do, and then some up to the ~691 races.

Fourth Car: TVR Cerbera 4.5/Griffith. FR, and like pupik said, it's a beast.

Fifth Car: Audi/3000GT/R32 Skyline/RUF. Need the 4WD for the 4WD races, of course.

Yay.

Generally I try to follow the unenforced rules regarding manufacturers nationality, but not all the time. As far as wagons and 80's sports cars 'n stuff, I haven't even done a lot of those races. I don't know if I ever will. I am in no big hurry and have no particular desire to "complete" the game. I just like playing it.

I didn't used to keep all the prize cars but now I do.

I used to tune to the maximum allowed HP but then one day I realized I could win with a lot less than is allowed and keep it more interesting. So now I don't. I think I learned that in the MR Challenge.

I go through phases with rallys. Lately I've had little to no interest in them, but I've won them all... and no, not with the Escudo. Actually I haven't won the Pikes Peak Downhill yet.

I go through the whole game in phases, really. I haven't done a race in weeks. I haven't even taken the arcade disk out in weeks (except to buy and tune that M12 and Camaro SS '97 for Davey's Weekly Race). I have all the cars I want for now and have just been pushing lap times down as far as I can (lately it's been Cerb. LM on Trial Mountain... addicted to that). When I get the urge I do a race usually just to win a car I don't have but want (and will sometimes use a car that'll get it over with ASAP).

It's more fun and challenging competing with fellow GTPers than with the computer.

Oh, and as for nationality, well, I chalenged myself to win all of the GT League (minus World Cup) with a normal Elise. Wasn't nearly as hard as I thought, and I beat it easily. But other than that, I don't follow nationalities, but I DO follow the things for 80's Car Cup, Stantion Wagon Cup, etc.

To start with, just me trying to win every race in the game, I got the red Mazda RX7 '90, and did the Super Speedway race in the station wagon cup until I got enough credits to by my next car, the BMW320ci. With that I won the Ford GT40 race car, bought a GT40 road car, an Escudo and a GT-ONE. Raced almost everything in these: BMW for 147-295hp, GT40 road for races up to 492hp, GT40 race for 492-591, And the Escudo for the free races, and all ralling. FR used a Cerbera, FF an FTO, 4WD an Evo VI. Alfa 155 for the GT300.

Since then I use cars that aren't tuned to the hp limit. I use the Zanarvi Silvia (413hp) that you win in GT300 for the Red Rock Valley All Stars race. It has less than half the horsepower and is only about 8 seconds slower than the Escudo.

I won races 100/150 HP down on the field already.

Once in an S2000 with 300-something in a 395 race with nothing but Gearbox....

Sometimes it's interesting to see how little you can use to beat the AI; other times, it's interesting to see how you can beat the lap record.

I postulate that you can win the entire game (except those manufacturer's races, that is) with only 5 cars.

Mazda Demio GL-X
FF / 96hp to begin with, low enough (and not as boring!) for the ~98hp Kei car limit...tunable to 250hp, which should be plenty for all FF races, and a few others. Also enough to complete all National Races in the GT series

Skyline GT-R '99
Just enough to squeak into the lowest 4WD category, and eventually enough to take on the GT500 series. A decent rally car, suffers from oversteer, though.

MR2 GT-S '98
A nice MR car, will have no troubles staving off the GT40 at Red Rock Valley, good for the GT300 series

Levin/Trueno '85/'83
This FR car will get you into the lowest FR race, and is lots of fun to race. Or you can choose a '93 Supra as your first day car; quite a bargain at about 3 grand.

Escudo or Cultus
Well, you have to beat it somehow at Pikes Peak.

Of course, there's not much fun in this method, I think. The fun is working a car from scratch to race-ready...seeing it all grown-up. So there's many to choose from, and it never hurts to leave East City now and then for a little fun!

Sometimes, but using cars with normal tires or normal suspension setups can make it a little trickier. Buying lots of cars makes the bank run dry, forcing you to be competitve. Make your car earn it's upgrades, I say.

I just used the same S2000 with less 400 HP (between 370-399) and won a race with the HP rating set at 591... quite easily too.

S2000s have an extremely low center of gravity (for their layout).
if that's at all incorporated into the game, it should be able to whip cars with bhp advantages.

no planning haha, first time I played, i just bought cars I liked, or with just enuf HP to beat the other cars in the race i needed to win, bla bla, the second time around i planned a lil more....planin works
