GT Sport - Dynamic HDR support? (HDMI 2.1 spec)

HDMI 2.1 is finally here, bringing support for dynamic HDR metadata, instead of static HDR metadata.

Naturally, my question is will GT Sport receive an update for it? Or maybe it's already implemented since Kaz was quite sure GTS is the best HDR game to date, as well as Digital Foundry said it's the best HDR "app". Will this be a graphical improvement worth buying the new expensive cable or not? And more importantly, will it work with PS4 systems?

I don't think the new specifications will change anything at all since unless the controller can support all that 2.1 adds the cables will be utterly pointless anyway. I mean HDR is far more important than 4K, problem is the technology to support the full gamut of HDR isn't there yet, which is probably why they are talking ridiculous resolutions(that's easier to deal with) over full HDR representation from TV screens. Trying to get commercially available screens to output 1000 nits of brightness is an expensive undertaking, this level will really be able to show off HDR10, Dolby Vision requires some obscene nit brightness to show itself off and it's huge gap over HDR10 in both color range and brightness/contrast. By the time this stuff becomes available, we'll be playing games SAO style and won't need pointless things like TV sets, just beam it straight to my subconscious if you will.

As I photographer I know HDR when I see it, GT Sport is not full HDR, the HDR is a marketing blag.

HDMI 2.1 is a hardware standard, unless Sony release a future revision of the PS4 Pro/ PS4 with HDMI 2.1 hardware in it then no - it won't support dynamic HDR.

And with regard to the HDR comment above, photography HDR and display HDR are different. HDR as defined with displays is the breadth of colour gamut and the contrast ratio a display can replicate given the requisite information. Photography HDR is not the same. This is just a confusing re-use of an existing acronym. Arguably display HDR should be called HDR, as it provides a display with a higher dynamic range than previous models. Photography HDR also provides photos with a higher dynamic range than the sensor can manually capture, so also should be called HDR.

Try thinking of it as 'Higher Dynamic Range' rather than HDR - they aren't a marketing blag, they are a descriptor. In the same way Hi-Res means many different things, it is supposed to be 'High Resolution', not a 'feature' or marketing blag.

If you look on the spec of HDMI 2.1 and the bit rates I think its clear it cannot be done on PS4.

As a photographer, you've probably been looking at far higher bit depths than a PS4 is capable of, maybe 14 bit, 16 bit or even 32 bit.
