Greetings, I'm a software developer and a stats junkie so I've been working on a program for leveraging the undocumented and semi-public API for mining user statistics. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find very much info about other API endpoints but I have been able to compile a decent amount of data.
Using one of the API endpoints, I was able to gather that there are just a touch over 3 million registered accounts. One of the flags in a users profile is "status" where 1 indicates that a user is active and 2 indicates that a user is inactive. Using that data, I've imported the following information:

Thanks, I read part of that thread a while back when I started down this rabbit hole but I see that someone mentioned the “stats##” profile data that I’ve been trying to decipher. Wish PD would document the API and make it a little more public.

By gathering these huge amount of information is it also possible to see how many 2nd 3rd 4th and so on places anyone has obtained. That’s something that’s really interesting because not only 1st places are important but only these are shown on the regular GT Sport stats Screen.

The stats are either not capturing all the data or, more likely, there are plenty of copies sat under the Christmas tree.

For example you have UK users at 208,302. UK retail sales where over 100k for the first two weeks, and on Black Friday week alone, another 100k+ where sold. When all weeks are totaled up GT Sport is over 300k retail. Add digital (30% average but could be lower), your looking at around 400k in the UK.

The Christmas present theory makes more sense when you factor in the majority of sales beyond the first two weeks where part of PS4 and PSVR bundles.

The data mining process is only about 75% complete. The application that I wrote to mine this data is reading about 500-600 profiles per minute. I anticipate that the users/country information to be complete some time around the afternoon, on 12/19 CST. After that phase is complete, the next phase is to import wins, driver rating, sportsmanship rating, etc. Unfortunately, in the test that I did earlier this week, that process was only reading about 200 profiles per minute, so roughly 10 days for all 3 million profiles, or 8 days if I only update the “active” users. I wish there was a faster way to do this but I haven’t been able to come up with anything.

That’s pretty much the same information that I used. There are other API endpoints for event and championship data but I haven’t looked into those much. The active/inactive status that I mentioned was because the user profile data had a status field that for all the profiles that I had imported was either a 1 or a 2. I assumed that the profiles that had a status of 2 were “inactive” since most those profiles did not have any logins in the month of December.

Good point, but something doesn't seem right about that discrepancy. Digtal is presumably linked to an account immediately, and although I'm not sure if that automatically creates a profile, those are presumably not wating for Christmas. Take 50k to 100k away from 200k, and it seems that far too high a proportion haven't been played yet... one or other figure must be innacurate, or there's some other factor. Milouse's sampling on Dec 4th estimated 216,000 UK profiles, and although this is sampling a larger number of profiles, if it's going through in order (rather than random) there might be some bias in the stats (at this point).

The digital percentage would only be representative (IMO) in the first 3 weeks. Let's say approx. 130k retail plus 30% digital. From that point onwards a high percentage of PS4 and PSVR units came with GT Sport (150k+). Individual game sales are of course a factor, but again I suspect that's heavily split between those buying for today, and those bought as presents.
