For those in the know, are the cars that are in both GT1 and GT2 exactly the same. Thus, has a car like the R33 GTR simply been carried over, or was it updated with more polygons and better textures for GT2?

I thought the cars in GT looked better than the cars in GT2. Obviously, there were loads more cars in GT2, but GT had better graphics.

This is yet another question Pupik would know specifically. I know there are less pixels per car in GT2 (when compared to the first game) but I don't know how many are in each. I think in GT2 there's only like 200 or 300 in a car. Something like that, I'm too lazy to look it up. Anyways, yeah, in GT2, there's definitely less.

The word that you are looking for is polygons, and that hasn’t answered my question. I want to know if the GT1 models were carried over to GT2.

Cosmic, you are high! I think some of the GT2 models were carried over from GT1 but with LESS polygons!

They had the same number of polygons, however I do think that because of the number of cars in GT2 PD got lazy on some of the models and didn't do them as good as they were in GT1, if a model is carried over, it's carried over as it is, they arn't going to carry a car over from GT1 and then change it so it's worse than it was.

Not really.

Actually, the only differences I perceive between the graphics in GT1 versus GT2, is that the cars appear to be better rendered in the garage and showrooms in GT1, compared to GT2. The cars smoothly rotate and are larger in GT1, but in GT2, the car quickly spins about, and appears smaller. My guess is that PD wanted to fit all those cars (about 600), yet had to compromise somewhere.

In the actual races and replays, I'd give GT1 a slight edge on the car modelling, but GT2 has nicer textures and anti-aliasing on the text and other graphics that appear on the screen.

So I don't see the argument that GT1's graphics are sensationally better than GT2's. Then again, my vision isn't that good, and I wear corrective lenses at most times.

I think the answer is yes, but some sort of algorithm or different rendering engine has made the cars look differently with regards to shading and light, texture and fill. I don't think PD re-rendered the 160 or so cars that transferred from GT1 to GT2; a lot of the cars look very much the same, especially the Racing Modifications on some of the GT1 cars. There are a few cars that didn't quite look the same, maybe PD wasn't satisfied with the way some of them turned out; but when I compare some cars form GT2 to GT1 (and vice versa), many of the paint schemes look identical, the cars look similar, et cetera.

Many of the race mods in GT1 "blanked-out" certain sponsors, since PD hadn't received the copyrights to use all the logo likeneses and brand devices. In GT2, the floodgates opened, and even sponsors that appeared on one or two obscure cars were included in the copyright credits. Many of the "old" GT1 race mods still have the same appearance in bothe games, which leads me to believe the car models were carried from GT1 right into GT2.

Again, this is merely speculation, despite my knowledge of the game, I neither designed, planned, nor programmed the game.

Look I'll be honest! I don't know **** about car modeling in video games, all I know is that the cars in GT2 look worse than the GT1 cars! I mean, in GT1, when they do that camera angle by the side of the car, you can see the TIRE TREAD for crissakes! Well, there's one guy who can solve all of this: PUPIK!??!?!?!???!?

Thanks for the info everyone. I started this thread because it will be interesting to see if polyphony simply cut and paste car models from GT3 and GTC into GT4. Or whether they endeavour to improve the older models for the upcoming release. We can learn from the 32 bit transition from GT1 –GT2 as it gives insight into how PD may tackle the next instalment.

The most obvious difference I've noticed are:

the wheels, in GT2 the wheels actually have a bit of a dish, where in GT1 they're perfectly flat.

in GT2 they went slightly overboard with the specular mapping on the cars, uber showroom spec, which is kinda, glitzy but unrealistic.

This is interesting that you mention GT3 and GTC ports in GT4. The answer is no and yes, no models won't be ported from GT3, yes they have been from GTC, the answer is simple. In GT3 they used a gob****e method to model the cars and it took 2-3 weeks to do one car, by the time PD started work on GTC, they'd created a new method which not only cut the time down to a few days but provided better results in terms of file size and looks, KY said he was using this for the cars in GT4 and it was used in GTC, if you look closely the cars in GTC that you can drive look better than they do in GT3.

They were'nt lazy. In fact i think they did a great job with the cars in GT2. PS1 can only show 360,000 polygons a second so PD have to make the cars low poly.
(and they over did the reflections)

Some of the models were quite poor in GT2 compared to other cars in the game, thats why I say lazy, but on the whole it was fantastic for the PS1.

I think we’re all aware that PD modified their system for modelling cars in GTC…..

If you look at GT3 cars that have been included in prologue you will note that they are unchanged from their original state. Check out the headlights on the old Celica rally car for a useful example. The only difference that can be seen between the original GT3 models and now is that in Pal prologue the in game wheels have been updated slightly. Check out R34 wheels. What will be interesting is if PD improves and polishes the GT3 models in some way before the final release.

They will replace the GT3 models with new ones. I personally haven't noticed any in GT4:P but I haven't looked, but they are alll over the place in GTC.

I think the cars look better in GT2, but the tracks seems more detailed in GT1.
The cars look "squarish" in GT1 and the wheels are ugly.
For whatever reason ( maybe more polys ) high speed ring and the part common to autumn ring and autumn ring mini looks better in GT1.

Who really cares? Anyway, whatever way you look at it, both games have excellent graphics. I haven't played GT1 in ages, so I don't really remember what the graphics are like (but they are very good). So lets just leave it at that, shall we? GT1 graphics: excellent, GT2 graphics: excellent.

Most likely everyone would think the car models from the newer version would be better detailed, but to my beautiful sight I got to go against it this time. I would say the models in GT1 look better. Those of GT2 look to squared and are messed up like hell. 👎

Hear hear, I agree with you there. GT cars seem better defined and clearer than the same cars in GT2.

I don't know about PD copying the graphics of the cars across from GT to GT2 but the BHP is not the same, some cars have extra parts while other cars have less parts and the settings are not the same.

If PD copied across the graphics of the cars then why not copy all the other files that make up the car?
