Here's something I find odd, why do you think GT3 (in theory), is more successful than GT5? I've looked but I can't find the first year of sales for GT3 to compare to the first year of GT5, but there should be more gamers, and a similar/same percentage (of a larger number) should like racing games, so you'd think that would just work out that GT5 sells more.

Yet from what I read, the numbers say it won't - why do people think that is? 800 standard cars or something? Is it something obvious I've probably read somewhere before and forgotten?

GT3 had some of the absolute best tracks in the gt series that don't exist in gt5. The graphics may not be very good, but it was a better quality gameplay wise... Also, it's the last gt game that doesn't feature bspec...

As far as console racing, GT didnt really have any competition until 2005 when the first Forza came out. Now with FM4 there is no doubt that people have switched over.

I think GT3 has more sales than any other GT game.
GT3 was more arcade IMO. Still very fun though.

GT3 had features GT5 hasn't, cars GT5 hasn't, tracks GT5 hasn't. But as a whole GT5 has many more new and more important things. Online racing, quite a few existing tracks, cockpit view, mid-race save game, seasonal events, updating, car exchange, changable weather, day-night transition, better FBB for wheel owners to name some of the new staff.

Personally I don't think it has any thing to do with the GT series, 10 years ago cars where way more popular then they are now, these days most of my friends could care less about what new porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc are coming out with, most view cars as tools or necessity's. Sure some numbers have defected over to iracing, forza, rfactor , etc. over the years but I bet the numbers are minuscule, for instance forza4 sold just over 1 million copies in it's first week of sales which to me is a flop! but it also means auto culture itself is slowly becoming a niche market. The GT series itself is lucky to retain the majority of the market but I think those numbers will get smaller as time goes on

I think it has something to do with the fact that about twice as many PS2s than PS3s were sold in the first 5 years of their respective lifespans.

And while I don't know the exact numbers for each single year, the more people have the console at home, the more potential buyers.

Because it was first PS2 GT game, that's why.
EDIT:and it was PS2 launch title(like GT5 should've been PS3's)and showed new console's capabilities

GT3 was bundled with the PS2 during one of it's highest selling periods and for quite some time, when you purchased a PS2, the default game was GT3.

GT3 was a launch title. It was like one of THE games you have to have when you first get a PS2. Also it was the only racing simulator back then. No one dared compete with GT yet. Until Forza came out. If GT6 is a launch title, no doubt it will sell fast.

I personally never liked GT3 much. Still think GT4 is the best GT game.

GT3 was one of the best games, didn't mind the rubber-banding AI made races more fun and challenging....
Now why GT3 sold more was because PS2 was a must have back then, and GT3 was a default game you got, thats how i got mine

Yes very good point, that might account for... gee, no idea, 20-30% maybe? Wouldn't be anything like a 50/50 split surely, but conservatively, 30% of the former % when GT3 existed might be on Forza 4 now (includes actual and lost potential).

I think everything else said here all makes sense, launch title, car lovers becoming less main stream, less PS3 owners than PS2 owners, all ocme together to make GT5 sell less than GT3.

It indeed did have the best tracks, also the graphics you say are not very good (compared to gt5) were actually ground breaking at the time, its was the best looking game I had ever seen when it came out on ps2 and is still my favourite game of all time! I put years into that game. The reason it sold more than gt5 is the ps3 was the only top end console, it was before the xbox.
