Howdy there.

I have had my game for about two years, have done just over 400 days/races, and there is a serious problem.

After finnishing a race, the screen that it comes to should be the "loading" screen, with that clock-thingie spinning around, white in colour. But what happens at random times, is a red clock-thingie appears, and it just sits there. I turned off the TV and came back at least an hour later, and it was still there.

The CD is in excellent condition, the playstation is n perfect condition, nothing wrong, so I have no idea how this is happening. I have been gmabling wether or not to do the nurgburg 24 hour, because if it stuffs up, my PS2 will be thrown to far up sony's bum bum... (you know what I mean).

PLEASE HELP!!

Ahhh, the fateful Disk Read Error. A good (well, not really) sign that your PS2 is on the way out.

Search for "Disk Read Error" or "Disc Read Error" for a few solutions.

Although the game may well seem un-scratched it may well be as the same thing has happened to me before, because Gran Turismo is a dual layer disk sometimes problems can occur on one of the layers. It is impossible to fix from what I know. If you can, borrow some elses GT4 to try on your PS2 if that doesn't work then its bye bye PS2 if it does work then try investing in a new GT4.

Sometimes, just realising and entering the disk (Or opening the PStwo) fixes the issue when it happens because an eventual reading error. If the PS2 has a lens problem or whatever, this method is useless mostly.

Did you try putting up ps2 in different poistions? If you have the large box ps2 that is old, then it sometimes has a harder time reading the disc becasue the disc is big in file size. (This is what's with my Burnout Dominator, the disc is too big it can't read). Anywho, it can also be becasue your lens are getting weak, mine is too. What you can do is instead of putting it flat, make it stand, (use a Vertical stand if you can). your lens, when disc in put in, moves out and is raised up closer to the disc to read it. When laying your console flat, it requires strength to lift the lenses up. So by putting it vertical the lens move horizontally rather than vertical. This can vastly improve disc reading.

I realize "disk read error" isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind with this problem, but doing a search with those terms will reveal that there are about a million threads about this already.

Your PS2 is dying. It happens. You can prolong its life by readjusting and/or cleaning the laser, but you'll eventually need a new system.

yep same thing happens to me...has been doing it for a while now (about 6 months) also did it on my other PS2. The one i'm using at present has had a Messiah chip fitted along time ago and i'm not sure if this has had anything to do with it, or whether its just a case of the laser burning out?

coincidently it seems to happen when I use certain cars, from memory its doing it on the Aston Martin Vanquish and some others especially the normal road cars that have been super equipped and I go to the family cup and set the levels to 10 (cant remember right now) as its been a few days.

I also opened up the PS2 to try to adjust he laser but that did nothing either.

Looks like a PS3 maybe on the cards or a another PS2 slimline until the prices drop for the PS3?

Ia already happened to me twice, that red watch thing on the screen forever, nothing else worked (neither opening the dish, putting the cd back, changing from horizontal to vertical or vice-versa), and it stopped doing that when I cleaned the lens. Simple as that.

Do you smoke on the room where your PS2 is? Cigarette smoke forms a thin layer over the lens and will eventually cause you your current problem much faster than the normal dust you'd find.

this thing has happened to me twice as well. what ive heard, the original ps2 had laser problems and so did the slim ps2. ive had two slim ones and had both died on me. i had them both just over a year and they started to have problems. i now have another one witch is working fine (touch wood). dont use a lens cleaner cause that dosen't work, trust me, i know, ive tried this thing before. best thing to do is buy a new one and get a three year waranty on it. do you have a slim one or a big one, and dose the ps2 keep ticking?

My original PS2 worked months after the the lens was cleaned. Sadly, after those months past, the machine wouldn't read anything at all unless you slammed it hard (literally), then it would read again. This wasn't tolerable, so it got the boot and bought another, which has worked ever since it was traded in a couple of weeks ago.

or you could get a PS3;)

Actually the PS3 isn't cross-compatible with PS2 games from what I read recently.

PLEASE HELP!!

This happened to me last year. I tried cleaning the lens, the disc, and standing my PS2 slim on its side. Sometimes that last one would work, but usually it wouldn't. I also tried opening and closing the door. Again, that would sometimes work but often would not.

What worked for me was I went and bought a brand-new copy of the latest version of GT4 (last year this was Platinum in my local gaming store). THAT worked! Till this day I can use my old disc (which I think was used when I bought it) and the red clock eventually shows up. Or I can use my "new" disc; which works fine every time. :)

Guess I got lucky. I don't want my PS2 to die. Yet.

Bin there, got the t-shirt.The only thing that worked for me was to clean, clean and clean some more.I do smoke in the room with the PS2 and I clean it every month.

well, its done it to me twice now, and all I did was put the playstation in the horizontal position (as it only seemed to happen when it was vertical) and open and then close the disc tray, let it load for a few seconds and then the red clock turned white and it carried on as normal.

This glitch happens to me aswell. I have ended up buying 3 GT4's anbd it still does not work. This ruins a perfect game!

You didn't read my post about it, did you? Even when I posted it in the thread where you mentioned it, created by yourself

The problem is in your PS2, not in your GT4 Disc! It doesn't matter how many copies of GT4 you purchase, the problem will still appear because you need to change/fix your current PS2.

If you have a slim PS2, open the cover and close it again. Try it again if the spinner doesn't turn white in about a minute.

Should work most of the time. It's a bit troublesome though. I once had someone step on it (Whoops...) and that solution worked fine for me. And then the PS2 fixed itself. Sorry for the short sentences.

I'm having this problem as we speak...
I don't know what to do either, I've cleaned the thing, put it on it's side,
and nothing seems to work.
Ah well...

I had this problem about a year and a half or so ago, and had read everything about realigning the laser. Wanting to try the easiest route first, I called Sony, and explained the situation. I was polite and considerate, and they offered to fix it for free, I just had to pay for shipping one way. They realigned the laser and put a new seal on it, and I had it back within about a week. I had to pay nothing other than the cost of shipping. Note that I have a launch PS2, got it literally the morning they came out, first box in Kmart, so its definitely one of the oldest ones out there, with no existing warranties of any kind.

Now, I'm not saying this will work for sure, but I've come across quite a few other PS2 owners with similar stories. They may or may not bother to help you at this point, but its definitely worth a simple phone call to SCEA customer service before dropping another $120 on a new slimline. Other than that one problem that Sony fixed, my PS2 is still going strong after 7 years, knock on wood...

I bought my PS2 (non-slim) used from Gamestop last week and at first it didn't even recognize the GT4 disc in the browser. I took the PS2 apart and cleaned the lens with a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol. I also did some adjustments to the lens angle (you do this by rotating the white gear under the drive tray.) Eventually it worked, but the load times seemed very long and I'd get an occasional DRE on some of my games. A couple days ago I took the PS2 apart again and did some more adjustments on the lens angle. Took some trial and error but I've got it almost spot-on now. No more DRE's and GT4's loading screens became much shorter after doing the second adjustment.

When you adjust the lens angle, try using a blue disc. The blue discs are the hardest ones to zone the lens in on (namely, that 'Contra: Shattered Soldier' game.) Silver discs (i.e. GT4) are kinda medium difficulty, and plain DVD / movie discs are the easiest. If you can get Contra or any other blue disc working good in your PS2, your lens angle is probably right on the money.

Hope this helps.

Well I have fixed my PS2 by cleaning it's lense so ''in your face''!

P.S: I was joking about the in your face bit!
