Can i connect my ps2 to my hdtv? my TV has hdmi conection, but i can't find ps2-to-hdmi cable for such connection...only analogue or s-video cables available...

Or is it not possible and i can't connect ps2 to tv digital way....?

Thanks

i don' think ps2 has the hdmi connection, but if you own GT4 , you can go to the options menu and change it to HD (1080). Not sure if that would make any difference though, but try it. give us some feedback.

hafa d.

If GT4 has option for HDTV, then ps2 should also be able to handle it??? Why would 1080i be made in GT4 if PS2 can't connect that way....?

Also PS2 has DVD, which could be viewed on HDTV.....

To market and sell games, probably.

There is no PlayStation to HDMI connector that I know of. The expensive version of the PS3 will have an HDMI out, it's alleged.

Unfortunately an "HDTV" standard still doesn't really exist. You can purchase a HD "component" video cable for the PS2, and hook that to an HDTV or other HD device with component HD inputs. This is different that HDMI or whatever they are calling the newer "standard".

I'm using the component cable to drive a DLP (Digital Light Projector) in 1080i mode for GT4 and it looks great, a big boost in scenery resolution. Signs become readable at a much greater distance, trees have much more detail, city courses especially shine. So it does work.

Maybe you can get a component to HDMI adaptor?

I'm not familiar with the technology myself, but I believe you can only link HDMI to HDMI, due to some bizarre encoding/decoding between digital devices.

All component cable is capable of transmitting a 1080i signal. You do not need HDMI or DVI in order to receive a 1080i signal as long as the source, in this case the PS2, supports 1080i output.

Do not confuse this issue with the recent ICT (Image Constraint Token) function recently adopted by the studios as an option for their HD DVD/Blu-ray titles. ICT gives the studios the option for each title they release to restrict 1080i/p output to ONLY HDMI or DVI w/HDCP. In this case, component would be limited to 1/4 HD or 540p. So far none of the studios have chosen to use this feature, and there is reliable speculation they wont for several more years until there is a much larger install base of HDTVs with HDMI.

I have a 1920x1080 projector and it accepts the 1080i signal from the PS2 through component without any issues. Even on my 1280x720 HDTV, GT4 looks a good deal better when outputting in 1080i then 480p. Besides the added resolution, even when scaled back down to 1280x720, part of the reason for this is that the PS2 does not have a very good deinterlacing chip, and that most modern HDTV's will do a better job deinterlacing the image than the PS2 can.

Bottom line: The PS2 can output 1080i via component, and GT4 looks much better when set at 1080i. 👍

HDMI can be easily linked with various adapters that convert it to other digital input/output standards like DVI, MDA1, DCRT, etc. Of course for obvious reasons, it cannot be linked to an analog input/output, like component, S-Video, composite, etc.

HDMI has come under a little fire lately for some poor handshaking between equipment using different versions of HDMI. They hope to fix this problem with their next release, HDMI v1.3 which should be made available to manufacturers in the coming weeks and will likely start showing up on products shortly after CEDIA later this September.

I'm sure the PS3 will have HDMI v1.3

Except for PAL... :(

Bottom line summary of the plot so far: no HDMI connection from the PS2, must use component cables for HD display, but the question is irrelevant for Lithuania as the PAL version of the game does not have HD mode available.

I bought a component cable (5plugs) for PS2-to-HDTV connection and when i plug everything, i can't get picture at all (when ps2 starts). Only sound....

Do connection with component cables requires special setup or options to be turned on? Or is something somewhere damaged.....

My tv is Panasonic 50" Plasma HDTV.

I use my PSTwo(slim) with a 47" Panasonic HDTV.

I just remembered. One of the reason why I bought the PSTwo was because I couldn't figure out how to use the progressive scan on my older PS2(regular). Picture came out all funky.

On my PSTwo, it was as simple as going to the option menu in GT4, set it up to 1080i, or 480p.

Edit: To clarify, if you have the original style PS2(non-slim), there might be a trick to it.

At the moment i can't see anything at all when i turn on my ps2...black screen and nothing... :ill:

You made my mistake, and didn't read the box... :D

Open the PS2 and boot to the browser screen with NORMAL composite video out cable (or SCART, or RF or whatever). Go into the settings and change the video out setting to YPbPCr. Save. Exit. Plug your component cable into the PS2 and you're away.

Thanks! I was hoping for something like that :) I'll give it a try today.

Damn, i changed to YPbPCr and still the same...black screen and no view.

Btw there is no "save" option ...although settings remain the same (changed) after i e.g. reboot.

Can't understand whats wrong....

It'll probably automatically write it to Your System Configuration on the memory card...

Is there another option besides the standard composite and YPbPCr? Might be that one. I'll have to crank my PS2 up to check.

This may be stupid but did you connect the right colors blue =blue, green=green, etc...also make sure you are in the right input...
 hope you are able to fix it...1080i is the way to go:tup:
good luck

I believe the other (incorrect) choice for component output is RGB.

Here's another possibility: check if your TV can handle 480i at the component input. I should, but check the manual anyway.

It might sound stupid, but it's always worth checking...

It's also worth checking you plugged your red video lead into the red video socket, and not the red audio socket...

Yes i did check everything, all plugs, red to correct red, etc ,etc :) This was first thing i tested. Unfortunatelly it did not help...i think my TV might be the reason....one time i managed to see some intro movie (GT4) , but colors were messed up and screen was flickering, and then black again.

Either TV does not support ps2 @component or maybe my ps2 is too old or maybe cables are bad...oh well, thanks to all for the help :)

Your PS2 is not too old, unless you just mean busted, because I have a very-first-gen PS2 and I get 1080i in GT4 and TT just fine.

With a normal set of cables (composite or s-video) start the PS2 and go into configuration. Somewhere in there you'll see a choice for component, select the one that's NOT RGB. (Unless, of course, that's already done.)

Cable quality, we can't judge that.

I did that :) Won't work. I can boot ps2 only with standart cables.

See, my original, older PS2 did that. Picture was in green, if I remember correctly. Flickered, then black.

I'm sure there is a way around it, as wfooshee's older PS2 has no problem displaying the game in 1080i. I'd be really surprised if it was the TV. Unfortunately, I don't know how to make it work, as I gave up and sold my older PS2, since I was going to make a switch to the slimline PSTwo anyway. :guilty:

My parents just got a 40" SONY Bravia LCD HDTV and I seemed to hook up the component cable, start GT4 and proceed to the options to change the screen settings. When I changed to the setting, it gave me a preview of 1080i and then reverts back to standard. Once racing, the picture changed over fine and even the TV itself displayed "1080i" in the upper corner.

After reading this thread, is setting up the cables in that way (via PSTwo browser) going to give me different results? Also, will I have to reverse the steps when transferring back to a Standard definition television before unplugging?

That's normal behavior. The racing and replays happen at 1080i (or 480p, if you're using that), the rest of GT4 happens at 480i.

Since you cannot save the resolution setting, you won't have to change it back to 480i if your next GT4 game is on a different TV. However, you will have to reset it to 1080i/480p the next time you play GT4 on that TV.

I have been looking at this thread with great interest, and a lot of anticipation, hoping for a way to see GT4 in HD on my LG42 Plasma, but!

-=- correct me if I'm wrong -=-

YZF, you are trying this is Latvia?

It is a PAL version of G4?

Well, GT4 does not output HD in the PAL version unfortunatly! :(

The confusion seems to be, that the help and welcome advice, from people sutch as a6m5 in the US, who uses an NTSC versions of the game.

They DO have an HD option!!

I hope this helps!

(Yes! I'm back!) ;)

Sorry if this is off topic but I had a question. Is it possible to connect a PS2 to a computer monitor. The TV I use is 20 years old (no joke) and I was wondering if I could use my extra LCD 19in monitor instead. Sorry again if its off topic.

If the monitor only has VGA, then no.
