GT4 Masters Competition

I've been thinking about this for a while and I thought that we should have something of a one-off Masters Competition. What I mean is, a poll would be set up with all the photos that have each won the particular competition previously, eg week one winner vs. week two winner vs. week three winner etc.
Then, people could vote on which photo they thought was the best of the best.

This would be once only and could be run for each of the different competitions, eg Photomode, Photomode/Photoshop, Photomode Cover Design, Rally Photomode, etc.

I would be happy to set up such a competition, but I would like some people's opinions on whether this is a good idea or not.

didn't we had something like this with the photomode comp?

Did we? I was thinking for the other comps as well, though because Photoshop, Rally and Magazine are all coming up to Week 20...

Oh! Ok, I must have missed those. But what about the Photoshop and Rally and Magazine? A Masters comp of those would be good!

I don't really think it's so good because all those different comps and weeks are around different themes and stuff (all with their own particular strengths and limitations). A competition in between them kind of implies a competition between the themes themselves too, and that's something the winning photo doesn't influence.

The winner's comp for PMC's worked really well IMO.

What do you mean "it worked well"? I mean... ofcourse people would vote, but that doesn't quite change criticism. Now, I don't have a problem with it ofcourse. By all means, if people want it, I'd say go for it. I mean... why not. Just sharing my opinion that I don't find it so interesting, you know.

Oh yeah, what's IMO?

I do have this idea of some sort of über comp, in which a theme will be given and participants must have a set of 4 images around this: 1 unedited GT4 photo, 1 photoshopped (into a specification of the theme, an ad or whatever), 1 drawing from the photo, and one own car design on that theme ^^
It would independantly challenge photo skills, photoshop skills, drawing skills and design skills. Ofcourse the idea is pretty "far out", but I thought I'd share it here in case someone finds it interesting.

Your comp idea sounds cool. 👍
What I mean with "it worked well" is that, like you said people voted, and that no one had a problem with the different themes of each pic. I think that these "winner's comps" are very welcome to GTP.
What's IMO? In My Opinion.

I seeee...... :dopey: wakatta

I thought of putting the real photo skills into the über comp too, but the kind of themes for that medium are too different.
But this kind of comp would just take way too much time for participants to make all that stuff.

i like the idea of doing a tournament bracket 1v1 sort of thing... that would probably be quite fun.

I know that my opinions usually get people all fired up but as far as a "Masters" competition goes, in my humble opinion, wouldn't work out very well. Why you ask? Because every competition is set-up differently. Correct me if I'm wrong with these examples. The Magazine Cover comp let's the entrants do as much as is possible with Photoshop. The Photomode/Photoshop comp let's the entrants do the same as the Magazine comp. The Photomode comp allows only a few Photoshop enhancements as does the new Mini-Car comp. The Advanced Photomode 2.0 comp allows more Photoshop enhancements as the "normal" Photomode comp but not as much as the Magazine and Photomode/Photoshop comp. The Rally comp allows no Photoshop enhancements/modifications at all. And the Muscle Car comp seemed to vary from week to week.

I just don't think that the different comps are compatable enough to each other the make it "fair" among all the previous winners. The "Photoshop" comps would inherently produce better overall quality pictures than the "lesser" comps. Good idea though.

Just my opinion.

I agree with doc on this one, interesting comp idea.

Here's how i see it, we hold an eliminations match of about say for example 8 competitors, a semis match from the selected entrants and a one on one finals match. It would take a while, but it would be fun, Photographic and PS abilities would be tested in this sort of comp since, random themes and restrictions would be generated. This would be great as an end of the month sort of thing. elimination matches would run for a week, then, semis for 3 days and then the final showdown would have to be done in 2 days.

If you like the idea cool! if not, well there's always the mini-car comp! :D

Yeah, I definately see the validity of your opinion. Would probably work out well to do an open qualifier, rather than taking the old winners.
like, start a thread with a theme, everyone interested submits via PM to the organizer. Then the pix are posted anonymously for voting, rather than do it in the current style; for a tournament I would rather see a "write in" style...
ex: all the entries are zip'd into one archive, people download the archive, pick their top ten, and rank them accordingly. Then Pm their choices to the organizer.
At the end of the voting week the scores would be tallied up, like you get 10pts for everyone that put you first, 9 for each second, down to 1 point for 10th etc...
then take the top 16 entries, and seed them into a single elimination tournament bracket.
then it could be carried out with popular thread vote in a 1v1 manner from there.
I think it would be quite fun... If I had the time to organize it I would; but with a full class schedule and trying to work 30 hours/week at the same time... i'm kinda short on time ATM.

That's a nice idea doc, i like that! :D it's kinda like combining all of our comps into one giant tourney! we should try that sometime! 👍

Instead of having all the winning pictures "compete" against each other, why not have all the winning users compete against each other. Pick a level of Photoshop enhancements/modifications that would be a "mid-range" of what is possible with Photoshop and make it to where only past winners could submit an entry. And to spice it up a bit, take your suggestion of submitting the entries by PM to whomever will be the "moderator" of the competition and that user post the entries in a poll AFTER all the enties have been received. That way it's a completely anonymous competition and the "masters" will HAVE to do their best work.

From there the top 5 or so vote getters can then be graded on their quality, subject matter, etc. using the grading system that ImageShack already has in place. And the top "scoriing" photo will obviously be the winner.

Something like this can be done every few weeks or months or whatever time frame. With the competition set up like this it will be the winning users going head to head instead of mixed "format" photos.

Just a thought.

I have 3 computers at home
I could score my entry at 10 for three times :D

ehehe! sure franz! :D:tup:

@swissbear:

If everyone is ok with that yeah that would also b a good idea. but i think we should make this kind of competition extra special, maybe if we did a bi-monthly winner's tourney that would be nice, but of course brock or slick6 will have to have a say in this. I wouldn't mind running that tournament. :D:tup:

I agree, It sounds like an Awesome idea 👍

Maybe all of the winners in each individual competitions could compete against each other, such as - -'Week 1 winner' VS 'Week 2 winner'... etc, until the current week is reached.

heh... but how many IP addresses and GTP accounts do you have. :P

don't give him ideas! :D hehe. I'm working on a monthly comp right now, but it's still under evaluation.

Anyone ever thought of keeping personal track of your PMC status (in your profile)? Like: Comps entered, Poll positions (hehe that's a good one. I mean being picked for the poll), total # of votes recieved, max votes recieved in one poll, winning rate, etc etc etc.
Not really a very interesting idea, but oh well...

Sorry for going off topic, but it's not worth to start a thread for. So please ignore if necessary. ;)

No, no... I reckon PMC status is an awesome idea 👍 (Not that mine would be good, but anyway)

Another variation of an über/master comp could be like, a championship. There will be several themes (3 or 4 or something) and participants have to get a shot for each theme.
The scoring could be like: each theme will have a top 20 (or 10) poll, and your (vote) precentages will be added together to get the final overall score or something.
Does that sound interesting?

^ I like that .... but who will be picking top 20 (or 10)?
maybe all entries are included in the poll plus anonymity
so it will be fair to everybody

Something like that. The point is that each theme is voted independantly. So it's possible you score nothing on one photo, but win with another one. This might reflect one's overall quality then, you know.

Now I'm thinking of another thing:
I find it a pitty that when a comp closes, it's over, you know. Maybe you still have more great HM's, or perhaps after the comp, you suddenly have this great photo of that theme that perhaps would have been a winner. Obviously the comp is closed but I think it's a waste if there's NO space whatsoever for these, you know. So I thought: after a comp has closed, the thread with the entries would be moved to the regular PM forum (or a new one?), and people can just keep posting their shots there as if the comp was still going on, you know (but not really "entries" ofcourse). However it would have to be required that the shots would in fact have the quality of being a comp entry, or at least be particularly interesting, you know. It would be something like a "HM depot for your viewing pleasure".
For example, I got this new idea now for a vintage shot that I might have done as my entry, if I had the idea earlier. I could post it in my gallery, but I think it'd be better if there's a particular place for them, you know (organized per theme, so that you can see more of the same style/shots by others). We already have the (now useless) threads (with entries) anyway. Ofcourse we'd have to wait for the poll to close.

What do you think?
