GT4 Not working... New game?

Yea.. I recently stumbled onto this site to read the announcement thing for the demo GT5. And seeing that I am not in a position to buy a PS3 JUST to play a demo, I decided to get into GT4 again. So, I went to find my old copy of the game. Didn't work on my PS2. So I bought the greatest hits version from the store.. Disk read error. Returned to the store, got a refund, went elsewhere, bought the Greatest Hits version again. Disk Read Error.. Anyone know why this is happening?

I just bought the Pro Force Logitech wheel too.. I wanna play soo bad!!!

Must be a problem with the laser thingy in your PS2 to read some discs. I tell you what though- you're lucky if you got a refund. I bought a copy of Tiger Woods '07 once, found that power boost doesn't work on the game, and they wouldn't refund it because I could have copied it. I went through a couple copies before finding it was a screw up on EA Sport's behalf and had to sell it for a fraction of the original price. :grumpy: So have you got a mate with a PS2 that you can try the disc on?

If you have a slim PS2, open the disc tray, and clean all the dust out from inside (where the disc goes), and especially the laser. You don't need alcohol or anything, just clean everything you can reach with 3 or 4 Q-tips, and it should work. I had the exact same problem; I bought GT4 Greatest Hits, and, while all my other games worked, GT4 did not, so I cleaned all the dust out and it worked fine. GT4 is a dual-layered disc (or something like that) and is one of the hardest discs for a PS2 to read, so a little cleaning is necesary.

Most likely your problem is, a dirty lens or a mis-aligned laser. The first is easy to fix, either by using an CD/ DVD Lens Cleaner, or by opening the console, and cleaning the lens manually. If you clean the lens manually, a 50/50 mix of alcohol and water (distilled is best) makes a good lens cleaner.

It is the fatty style PS2 (non slim) Other games do work, except for this one. It is the only game that will not work. Do local Targets and Circuit City's sell the lens cleaner cd? I will see what I can do with the Q-tip when I get home from work though.. Its worth a try.

Yeah, the disc read error is common among the "fat" PS2's. As all have said above, cleaning will work to some degree, but if the problem continues to recur, you may need a new laser. If you have an independent videogame store near you, most will replace/repair the laser for around 20 bucks. The big chains (GameStop, etc), won't usually do this though so do try to find a local indie 👍

<edit> If you're mechanically gifted, you can fix the laser yourself. Search for "PS2 Disc Read Error" on Google and you should be able to find instructions. If you use the slim PS2 (like me), Hyst has the right idea - clean it first. If that doesn't work, look on Ebay for a PS2 intercooler fan. They're rare, but they're around, and they're cheap.

the dics cleaners dont work in the fat syle ps2 because of th e disc tray...the hairs on the cleaner get hacked off...manual opening is the only way

Ok so I searched and I picked up an extra ps2 with the common disk read error feature aswell from a buddy for 20 bux. Im mechanically gifted, have acess to all the tools needed, but I am just wondering how hard would the task be? I found a guide but does it take hours or mere minutes? At the moment I am almost considering to go out and buy a ps3...

This is categorically untrue.
I have a 2001 model Fatty PS2, that has been cleaned numerous times with the "hairy" lens cleaning CD.
It's been used almost daily since new, been left on for a staggering 21 straight days during an A-spec attempt at Sarthe 24hr race, and hasn't experienced DREs with GT4 yet.
It does, however, refuse to read the mini-MAXdrive CD unless I stand it vertically.

*nodnods* figures, I never did look at the back of the laser area.
maybe you should do your designations by the serial numbers on the bottom of the unit (i have a 50k fatty).

I had to take the disk tray completely OUT of my unit. but I've rarely got the RSOD, and only with my Gameshark Disk. I tried a shavedown scratch remover, and it appears that disk is slightly dished (grumbles)

Weirdest thing happened the other day.. That second ps2 I had obtained actually played gt4 without problems! I was at a point of desperation, that I could not afford the ps3 and wanted to play gt4 soo badly. I was about to open the 2nd ps2 (its early early style) and decided to see if the game would work on the ps2 first.. sure enough it did, and I am HAPPY!!!!

rare?? you sure?? when my dad bought a slim PS2 last Christmas, he actually bought a package.., the cooling fan and a travel bag came along with the unit.., of course, they are cheap, but rare??

-VWRacing- i did also experience the DRE when i played GT4 at a nearby computer shop.., the "fat" PS2 would sometimes not read the disk, the so-called "red clock" seldom appears..,

yea I get red clocks too, but the loading screen takes no longer than 10 seconds at most.. *knocks on wood* I am just happy to be playing now, while saving for that ps3 in the mean time :)

I've been getting red clocks lately...

oh no, what does that mean?? no more GT4?? :scared:

well, good luck with you getting your hands on a next-gen console.., (wish i could, too..,)

Nah, it just makes some tracks a pain to tune on, I can't buy Pontiacs, and I've had problems at Vegas... Of course, I've had the red clock come on and then go away, and the game continue loading, but I think it's past that now.

Ah well. Time for a new disc and a cleaning of my PS2's lens.

Still perfectly playable for those events that it does work on (Which means most of them, thankfully)

i'm just kidding.., :D

but yeah, sometimes you need to do maintenance on your PS2, or else it won't read some of the disks of your favorite games..,

When you put the CD in does it not start spinning all the way. This happens to me all the time. I put in a different games and play it for 5 or 10 minutes and let the PS2 get warmed up. Then I put GT4 back in and it works perfectly.

That's what my old PS2 would do to dual-layer DVD's of any sort. :dopey:

Having this problem and it ain't working for me. Maybe cause I'm using GTConcept 2002 to heat it up and it's such a dreadful game the PS2 tries to ruin any fun I want to have.

I just got mine working again by opening it and cleaning the lens (fat style PS2). Previously it would play any game in the house except for GT4, the only game I play.

Also, I'm profoundly inept when it comes to technology, so if I can do it, there's a 95% chance of anyone else being able to do it too.

Where can i find the lens?

My PS2 would not read most dvds, but it read CD's just fine, as it turns out the older ps2's laser is cheap and self degrading, so over time you should increase the voltage to it if it becomes an issue to read certain discs.

Just buy some sort of disc cleaner, and see if it would work then.

I had the same problem years back, the FAT PS2 has severe problems with double layer DVD, and as time goes...you end up with not playing games at all.
Solution; get a PS2 Slim, I mean...they are awfully cheap now, right?
Don't about U.S., but here in Portugal they cost as much as a PSP! It's barging!
