Vote!

Theme: DTM Battle on Apricot Hill Raceway

As far as voting goes, I have made it final, If you vote for yourself, winning or losing, your vote will not count so you may as well not even vote then. The true winner should win with other people's support, not theirs. If you don't like this rule, don't participate. This will be enforced.

Wow, look at all the speed blur pics this week!

I hope I get more than 6 votes this week. :)

It was close between the top one merc 190E and 2nd bottom one.

I picked the TT.

Thanks 911 GT3 RS!👍 :)

I had to go for the 13th one! The Calibra Touring car going around the haripin... I just like wide-angle shots I guess! I was thinking of voting for the one of the front end of the Red Bull Audi and Mercededs DTM, with the speed blur and all, (4th from the bottom) but I figured everybody and their grandma would vote for that one...

 my final vote went to the mercedes behind the opel astra when they blaze through the chicane. Love that shot, nice contrast. :) 👍

Loved it to be the judge of my own comp for a week. Thanks again :)

hmm tough choice, either the dusty chicane or the hairpin for me. I'll stick them up as dt wallpaper for a few days and see which one I get sick of first!

Sad to see that one of the most unique and original pics isn't in here to vote on. I still think that felix2107's entry of the spectators point of view would have made a nice addition to the ones posted here.

190E (pic #7) did it for me, stood out from a crowd of pictures with white, yellow, blue and red colored cars, plus you cant deny that the 190E is a pimp mobile.

It's definitely a great picture. I'd be interested to hear what photomode camera settings/techniques were used to get that jiggling, shaking effect on the background cars, it looks very impressive! 👍

As would I! It almost looks photoshopped.

Aside from bright & contrast, I do not believe it's photoshopped. That really wasn't the intent of my post. The jiggle is likely due to the other cars being on the rumble strip, while the Merc isn't. A low SS should catch that motion, right?

No big deal. I doubt the trees/etc were "on the rumble strip" as well, but regardless, that is a FINE photograph especially if untouched.

When CrackHoor said he'd be interested to know the settings, I sent him this PM.

Hi.

The picture of the 190E was taken with minimum aperture value. I'm not sure about the shutter speed, but I think it was the the default 1/125 (or maybe lower). Also I overexposed it a bit (well, in my tv at least).
The fact that the Mercedes is moving almost in a perpendicular direction to the camera, yet a bit to the side, gave the background that funny shaking effect.

Then, contrast (and a bit of lightness) was added in PhotoShop. LOTS of contrast. I had never added so much contrast in a picture before, but for some reason with this particular car/track it seemed like "the more the better". The background in particular, started to look like a painting.

Here's the original photo, btw:

If you want to, you can open the original photo in Photo Elements and add about +50 of Contrast and +20 of Brightness and you should get a similar result (I don't know for sure the exact values I used).

Again, as I've said before, it IS a "Photoshop pic" (as many others out there, by the way...), but as far as I'm concerned it's not against the rules.

Thank you for voting.

No, contrast and lightening are within the rules, and again the pic still looks excellent, but the "shake" is what sparked the intrest.

Great entry, and congrats on the win.

Edit: flipping back and forth between the two, it is obvious the shake was always present and the level adjustments just exaggerated it.

perhaps an update of the rules to state "no excessive use of brightness & contrast", although where do you draw the line...

I'd rather have no enhancments outside of GT4, so that everyone's on a level playing field. Yes, GT4's photo mode options are limited, but it is still possible to get a fair range of effects for the same shot.

maybe have another comp for freestyle shots where we can manipulate curves, hue & saturation etc to our heart's content? Otherwise I think we'll see more and more entries in which the contrast & brightness has been bumped up hugely - I almost did it for my holiday theme shot but felt it would be a ferrari-esque interpretation of the rules, ie leagal but not really fair.

I don't see what's wrong with 'correcting' an image for submission. It's a bit tedious looking through loads of grim, underexposed-looking thumbnails. I want my pictures to appear on a computer how they do on my tv screen.
When I first saw the winning entry I thought they'd gone a bit far with the 'correction', and was suprised to see it in the last 20, but if no rules are broken I have no complaint.
Can't believe I'm gonna end up runner up for a third week if nothing changes lol.

I can't agree.

Adding great levels of contrast will not always make a better photo. In certain types of photos you can barely add contrast and it's not that difficult to "blow" it.
Not only that but only bumping it up hugely will not be enough to make your photo a winner. You need to have a good picture as well behind it.

My point is that adding contrast (and also balancing it with brightness) is part of your "work" to make your picture more appealing and that, positively OR negatively, will then be thrown into the equation when people vote for your photo.

I like the rules the way they are. All I ever adjust is the contrast just to get the photo to look a lot clearer like it does on my TV. I don't see anything wrong with that, and since I don't actually have photoshop I'm glad there aren't more changes allowed. Seems like a good compromise to me.
