GT5, Is it worth it?

I've kind of given up on trying to play GT5 even though I've been looking forward to it for a long time.. Here's why:

For one, I can't go back to playing with a controller. I needs me a wheel. Only way to play IMO. I don't have a wheel for PS3. Good wheels are quite expensive. Then, I need someplace to mount the wheel, which has always been a dilemma since the invention of gaming wheels. I might be able to rig up something cheapo just to mount it but in all likely hood it wouldn't be comfortable or feel like a racing cockpit. Then a problem becomes setting up and breaking down the whole wheel/mount situation every time I can play GT5. Kind of a hassle. Can't just leave the wheel and all that stuff out in the living room all of the time. That won't fly. Then I'd need a place to store the wheel and all that, and space I don't have a lot of.

A decent cockpit setup would probably be at least $100. I've been eying lots of different wheels and racing cockpits (custom and retail) for a long time...I think this is actually the first time I've been out of the steering wheels & cockpits forum :P - Always drooled over some setups other people have going. Wish I had a good setup like some of those guys do, but the issue is money money money.

Another problem is I wouldn't be able to play it online, which is kind of a big reason to get GT5 (I also imagine finding games can be a problem, then of course the lag issues that follow.). I can't upgrade my PS3 firmware for unspecified reasons, therefore I can't logon to PSN. Perhaps there would be another way to go around PSN and still play GT5 online but then I'm even looking at many fewer options for finding a game to join, if I can find any. Probably wouldn't be worth it

I could spend a lot of time in single player modes though I'm sure. GT5 online sounds great on paper but I'm guessing the execution of it leaves a lot to be desired.

Anyways, with all those problems between me and GT5, kinda makes me think it's just not worth the trouble. What am I to do? Wheel prices don't come down ever it seems.

What about a DFGT they usually run around $100? I play with a controller and I would love to get a wheel but I can't do it yet but that doesn't take away from enjoyment. Of course I don know having a wheel will make it some much better :)

Wait a few months... wheel prices will drop once the demand dies down. There could also be a decent market for used wheels once the Thrustmaster T500 is released, and GT5 will still be around - there really isn't any hurry.

You can also consider getting the HKS racing controller as a compromise.

I have exact same problems. I do not bought GT5 because of this (Tarzan english again, sorry).

But GT5 is fun to be played with friends. I play with my friends almost every weekend.

Find a rich friend and convince him to buy GT5 with wheel and cockpit. It was the solution I found to the same problems you have. And it worked! We are enjoying the game very much, until driving becomes impossible due the excessive beer.

So basically
- you dont have the money to buy a quality wheel
- you dont really have the money to buy a wheelstand (forget cockpits untill you have loads of money)
- This saves you space and is easily placed and removed

In short:
if you really like the GT games, you wont hate it, and therefore is worth it. (there's many hours of single player gameplay)
But then again, if the wheel is the only way to go for you, and you cant afford that. Then dont buy it..

Hmmm, wasnt very helpfull now was it..
