GT5 online match making

This is my first post on this forum, hello everyone.

I downloaded the demo the other day and think its great so far. This is my first GT game on the PS3 bar the GT4HD demo, Ive also played/enjoyed GT1,2 and 4.

Ive noticed from the leader boards many drivers seem to be using wheels. My question is in the final game will PD let users search for other gamers that use the Sixaxis/Dual Shock controller and exclude the ones that use a wheel? Sort of like a level playing field. My driving is ok but wouldnt stand a chance against a good driver using a wheel.

My times for the tuned car is 1:39.1 using the sixaxis controller with AT gears. How much time can using manual gears make up?

👍

But, by the same reckoning, your driving also wouldn't stand a chance against a good driver using a controller.

We don't know how GT5 will do online matchmaking as no-one has played it yet. Ideally, what you are looking for is to drive against players of a similar ability, irrespective of what controller method they use. A controller doesn't make someone faster or slower. Wheel users aren't automatically faster than controller users.

Moving this into the GT5 forum as it doesn't really have anything to do with the time trial demo.

Oh, and welcome to :gtplanet: 👍

haha indeed, I have a wheel, but I dare say there are a lot of guys who use a controller and who are faster than me... I just have more fun.

Exactly. I use a wheel too and there are loads of controller-using drivers who regularly beat me, even button mashing ones... :(

I hope there is matchmaking through skill level as I have never come first in an online event in GT5:P. Best I've done is second.

If they had some type of tournament mode for online races. Perhaps online qualifiying could help pair up the people who are running close to the same lap times. However would not work good for a major tournament since would be to easy to sandbag your lap times. I do agree that they need to spend the time to give the players as many options as possible to create unique races based on simple defined races to very defined races.

I feel he is right. Users in the time trial leaderboards are already highlighted as using wheel or pad. Why can't I search for wheel/pad leaders rather than going through the top 50 trying to find the pad users among them. Its silly IMO.

I want to know how i rank up against other pad users. Because pad users do have a slight disadvantage. You will see more wheel users than pad users in the top ranks. I'm not saying a wheel is easier, it would take me months to adjust to using one I imagine. I'm saying more precise steering and throttle inputs enabled by a good set of wheel and pedals, gives you the potential to go faster.

Its like the analogue stick vs mouse argument for first person shooters. The second is better, but that doesn't mean the analogue sticks are bad. I'm better with the pad and analogue sticks respectively in both of these arguments, but the wheel and mouse do have the potential to make you better/faster.

I agree that you have more finesse and can be more delicate with a wheel, but the there is something else to think about:

Typically the fastest times times come from some of the most hardcore fans. The most hardcore fans are probably more likely to have a wheel. I definitely don't think that this is always true, and Im sure there are people who are more obsessed with GT than I am who use controllers, and they are probably faster, but I think in the grand scheme of things, hardcore fans go with wheels...

thoughts?

EDIT:

I also think that regardless of matchmaking logistics there should be a 'vote to kick' option or something. As FlareKR pointed out (below), there are lots of problems with the ghost solution to the demolition derby drivers. Also, I didn't think about the last two points, but I definitely agree. I think it would be cool to have 'meeting' type races where its say, all RX7s or something, but I hope that GT5s online racing isn't dominated by zondas or ferraris. Also, I don't know how to avoid it, but it would suck if little brothers and such went out for joyrides in their older sibling's fine tuned race machines.

I want an online match

WITHOUT
-5 year olds going the wrong way (kinda scary when you see their ghost coming straight at you)
-People who think the only way to win is to crash FlareKR into the wall.
-People who turn into ghosts and pass right through you.
-The 8 year old playing his big bros account and driving that cheated out Ford GT.
-All red Ferraris

I don't see a differance between wheel drivers and controller drivers, altough the controller people do cheat a hell of a lot more.

I'd like the game to remember my best time on the track I've selected with my current car, and match me with other people with similar times. No best time = dumped in random race.
