I have a surround setup, does 44.1KHz 5.1 Dolby Pro Logic, and Dolby Digital, works just fine with DVDs.

In GT5 with the PS3, I can't make surround work. I went into the PS3 sound settings for HDMI which is what I use, but also tried direct optical out.

I enable the output Dolby 5.1 format for the connection type I use in the PS3 sound settings, and disable the other ones, but when I start GT5 I get no sound at all.

If I put the PS3 on automatic GT5 just selects 2 channel 44.1

If I enable every output in the PS3, GT5 will wrongly select 7.1

Anyone have any ideas? With the 7.1 selected I can hear the game audio sounds WAY WAY better, but since I only have 5.1 half the audio is sent to non-existing speakers so the sound cuts in and out.

It is an old sound system, so maybe it's time to upgrade? Anyone use a reasonably priced 5.1 surround system that works with GT5?

Maybe the problem is that your audio receiver doesn't support some audio frequencies (I mean those 44.1 stuff), take a look on the manual or on the internet and enable on the ps3 only the audio outputs in the mhz range of your receiver.... happened the same thing when I hooked up my pc (with x-fi, so able to output very high frequencies) to my yamaha receiver (new but quite cheap), the receiver kept showing straight not recognizing the doly/dts track of movies and games, using only the compatible freq range it works perfeclty

Well I tried the 44.1/5.1 setup that I know my amp can do, but then I just get no sound.

If I enable everything on the PS3, GT5 selects 7.1 and I can't move the selection to the sound format dropdown in GT5 so I'm unable to select anything else.

Not sure what's going on, seems something in the audio line gets confused.

Make sure in your PS3 Sound Settings that

Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch
DTS 5.1 Ch
AAC

are all ticked. Then in the GT5 sound options (found in the GT5 Options menu), don't leave it on Auto detect, force it to 5.1 sound.

Tried that, but no matter what, if I have 5.1/44.1 setup on the PS3, GT5 selects 5.1/48khz which my system can't play.

I don't know why it does that because I only have the 44.1 codecs selected on the PS3 audio setup, all the 48khz codecs are deselected.

Your surround sound amp can't play 48kHz but it works fine for DVDs? DVDs are encoded in either Dolby 5.1/48kHz or DTS 5.1/48kHz.

My surround setup is 10 yrs old. My reciever was a good quality/high end unit when new and does dolby digital, dts, pcm. In the ps3 menu i have ticked DD 5.1, Linear pcm 44.1,AAC, and DTS. When i fire up GT5 it automatically defaults to DTS and have no sound issuses. When a uncheck everything(as i want GT5 to work with DD and not DTS) PS3/GT5 defaults to putting out PCM. Wont do DD for some reason. I have noticed that all my blu ray movies default to DTS aswell. It`s annoying but so long as it works in 5.1 i`m happy and i can`t tell the difference between DD and DTS. Just lucky i have a reciever that does DTS and DD!

Are you sure GT5's own options are not setting the game to output Linear PCM 5.1? If so, and your system only works with lossy formats such as DD and DTS, then I suggest manually changing the game to 5.1 DTS (superior to dolby digital).

OP: Find the lowest common denominator that your speakers/ps3/gt5 all agree on and play nicely for. In PS3 audio setting disable the most advanced option and reboot GT5 until you come up with some sweet Lang Lang intro.

edit: alternatively dial ps3 down to 2.0 and bump up the spec until you get all 5 working properly?

Test out enabling 5.1 48kHz to make absolutely sure. I was testing an audio issue and the game does not seem to support 44.1kHz (it will never output in that format). Even if you disable all the options in the PS3 settings and enable only 5.1 44.1kHz the problem remains that you cannot deselect LPCM 2.1 44.1kHz or 48kHz. So the game will always default back to LPCM 2.1 48kHz.

What's the brand and type of your system?
I can't imagine any system not being able to handle 48kHz audio, as it is the standard for digital video.

Try using the av cable for audio (just the red and white connectors as the hdmi cable will still carry picture) change settings on xbm menu to multi out, that's what I use on my 5.1 and it sounds great, have u set gt5 audio to home theater?

Thanks for the help all, turns out it was just an old crappy system with hackish support for various standards.

Got tired of messing with it, so I got myself an Onkyo TX-SR308, plugged it in and bam, everything works.

If you use the av cable which only carries left and right channels, you're not getting 5.1 - only Pro Logic..
