I just posted this in the general car forum, but when I get my RX-8 and put an intake and exhaust on it, it better sound like this.

Oh god that little bark when you lift off the throttle.

I have heard a tuned Rx-8 in real life, with an aftermarket exhaust and it sounds way better than that one! Kinda like a deep purr smoothed over buzz type sound. The one above sounds like it's using straight pipes with all the bass lopped off :)

I just took a Rx-7 for a spin for the first time in Prologue and it doesn't sound bad at all, much better than any other GT RX-7 sound before.
It sounds quite authentic. It has the muted turbine like buzz sound

Sounds much like this with a burr type tone

I know this thread was off the first page, but what the'eck. Just wanted to share a revelation that i'm sure you're all privvy to, but in the options in prologue, i just found, !!!!! LARGE THEATRE !!!!!

I've had a 5.1 setup for a while now and was blown away immediatly when I first had it all up and running. Was happy with the sounds as they were, ( really not sure why there's so much debate over gran turismo sound. )

Anyway I deleted my save to start all over again, and when i was going through setting up the game, I found it! All this time I was set to living room, and now i've found Large Theatre I'm blown away all over again. Everything is so much crisper. There are sounds from engines and gearboxes and everything else that i just didnt hear before. Its incredible!

Favourite moment so far; about to overtake a Z06 but decided to hang back to listen to the brute sing. Actually gargle might be more apropriate  Brilliant

Very glad for you man GT does sound very good 👍. I have been playing Forza3 for about a month straight, its def holding me over right now but the sounds are very good i really like them however they seem over done to me. While GT sound so damn real. Now dont get me wrong some cars need major work but some cars just sound beautiful. Replay Mode in GT with the 5.1 crank up is heaven!!! Hopefully GT5 sounds better:tup:

all that setting does is improve the dynamic range
Living room just squashes all the sounds together

...which can sometimes sound better, because Prologue leaves car sound fade too fast. I can hear Ferrari several miles from me when it's driven fast. But in Prologue when the car passes, after few meters it sounds like the car was 5 km away.

You probably never heard any game which sounds really good. For example even this arcadey crap sounds like revved McLaren,

and this sounds like "nothing at all"

That's because GT is mimicking a real camera's mic. Like a TV broadcast
Some of the GT replay cameras are really far away and are using zoom to capture the car, like in real life. You find a lot of time you will see a car in a video, but won't actually hear it until it's closer due to the lack of sensitivity in camera mics. Especially if they are directional type mics.

here are some good examples of this

Any by dynamic range I mean the difference in volume levels between the various sound components.

---

Oh and Shift for the millionth time is distorted and lacking in bass....

I can't hear anything like that in posted videos, I can hear the HSV sound crisply even after five turns, generally until another view comes. In Prologue, the sound after few meters just disappears or blends into other car sounds like it wasn't there to the degree if there was bird singing it would overvoice the engine.

Still, hundred times better and really goosebumps inducing when compared to GT. If sound in GT were like that, I wouldn't mind writting even one word about it.

Watch the parts when the car is approaching, you can barely hear it. Makes sense as the exhaust is facing the other side. And this is a very loud race car.... a street car is likely to be much quieter.

posting these vids again - listen when the car approaches the camera in the salom and brake tests - almost silent until very close to the camera

NFS shift sounds are good i also have this game, however still over done in my opinion. All these games have their good points and bad. I just prefer GT sounds. I def want them to improve on the sounds But I'm really pleased on how real the cars sound.

The sounds in Shift just have the balls, that's all. Some engines are really badly distorted but that McLaren sounds really good in my opinion. There are some further sounds like brake squeal, more realistic curb sounds fastening with car speed and interior view feel which is really overdone but as inspiration for more calm version it could be very good. But Kazunori is not watching competition, so what...

You seriously think you can compare the audio from those two videos?! As already said, the prologue video is not in the cockpit view, is recorded off-screen and clearly has a muffled, quieter tone. Don't get me wrong, I can hear all of the transmission and other mechanical sounds you are hinting at, but it's a pretty poor comparison.

The thing is, I've said it before - I much prefer a cleaner tone anyway, and would not like to race for 20 minutes listening to that racket! If PD get it right, they should ship the game with a par of ear protectors!

Seriously mate, that's your problem and I'm glad you're not the one deciding anything about the sound! I want it to be indistinguishable from the real thing and I hope that's PD's ultimate goal as well!(as it seems to be with graphics, by which the sound is greatly lagging behind)

Yea man i feel you on that i have that game and i find myself always turning my 5.1 lower while playing. Dont get me wrong it sounds good but its just over done. I love the sound in GT5P its clean and crisp I love how the sound differs from replay mode to my fav view interior view. While driving in interior mode you can def understand that your in a car driving so the sound is going to be muffled a lil bit, but when watching replay mode you can truly hear the beast come out of the car. Ex DB9 I love the sound of this car! Now don't get me wrong PD can def improve the sound I'm not saying its perfect but i prefer GT sound 👍

My problem?! I didn't realise I had a problem just because I prefer one thing over another... I wouldn't even want to put up with that racket even if I was in a real race car. Besides, race drivers wear ear protection so they do not hear what the microphone picks up anyway.

Although not always particularly authentic, I for one am happy with the engine sounds in Gran Turismo - clean and crisp as JDMKING13 says.

Yeah, I also do the same with GT5P depending on the view I use - I just don't like things being too loud/noisy regardless of what it is. For me, audio clarity is far more important.

TokyoDrift, I don't care at all if you are prefering "clean tone" over real engine tone. But unfortunately PD is preferring it too and when even one of the most potent engines in the world sounds like some korean hatchback then then I am worried again what "titbits" will PD take from its second hand engine sample shop this time. I am also so sorry that you hate that "racket" of that mighty engine, but that's what are supercars for and every car nut would piss his pants just because of that sound.

BTW, don't you wear pink clothes?

Yep, and I really couldn't give a rats ass about what you prefer either. The only thing I'm sorry for is your apparent inability to appreciate the fact that different people prefer different things. Contrary to what you might think, not all supercars sound like that video. In the village where I live, there is one Ferrari F430, an Audi R8 V10, and an Aston Martin of some kind (not sure which one). All nice fast cars, all sound different, none of which sound like the racket in that video. There is a big difference between a refined, deep throaty engine note from a production car, and the racket from a race tuned car. I'm not saying the sound isn't impressive, it's just not something I'd want blasting out of my speakers for 20+ minutes. Thankfully, PD appear to see things my way at the moment.

Pink clothes...riiiiiight, got a bit of a fetish have you?

Every time I spotted F430 it sounded like washmachine full of nuts and screws. Audi is one asexual automaker, just Audi, what to say further. Clean tone is not what you expect of supersports car.

Sounded like a washing machine full of nuts and screws eh? OK. As for Audi, love them or loath them, it matters not to me! I was just merely pointing out that not all supercars sound like they are race-tuned with no sound insulation whatsoever. Besides, having a "clean tone" does not mean it has no character.

Anyway, we are just going around in circles. The fact is, GT5 sounds the way it does, and I'm happy with that. Nobody is forcing you to buy the game.

In Audi R8 or F430, the only thing you can tell that it sounded like the real engine in GT5 prologue is if you stayed in 2000 to 4500 RPM. Above that is just plane silly engine note.

did you add that distortion with some sound edit program?
Not my vid, but you only need to record the vid with the sound input line at higher levels than neutral or turn up the record volume until reach the limits.

Or if you have a sound amplifier equalize the sound to your taste and turn up the level line, that vid sound pretty similar to my 5.1 at high volume except for the big distortion and low quality sound. In my setup is all more pleasant and hi-fi but very raw and powerful.

I find GT5P audio quite mixed...
Its average but has never been a strong point for them.
Somethings not right about it in the way the cars engine noise is modulated to higher toned frequencies when increasing engine revs.
As someone else said all the bass is in the low end and after about 4-6k in most cars the bass peels off.

I noticed that for me on my system using the "Small" setting actually produces the best bass and not the larger room setting at all.
This became evident to me when I installed a Buttkicker last year as you can clearly feel the difference. Not sure if others have found much difference in the room settings.
I use an aging but pretty decent 7.1 setup costing approx 2.5K yet have found in the past many PC sims with proper real audio files really can add to the whole simulation.
Audio plays a major part of any simulators immersion and I hope GT5 audio in the full game is improved or even has more control over some seperate sound files like tyres/engine/exhaust.
If they added that alone it would allow us to better tweak the audio in game.

Do many of you use Buttkicers or Subs to enhance the game and feel the engines and bumps in the road?
