Hi.
I'm here by accident. A happy accident, that starts with a home cinema rebuild, which led to purchase of a new disc player. May as well be BluRay, even though in real terms I don't think BR is much of a step forwards over DVD. So, which BR player? A little research indicated no less than the PS3 was the one of the best, and hardly any more expensive than a dedicated player. So I bought it, and they threw in a couple of games.
I'm not a computer gamer. I am a car enthusiast, so I'd heard of Gran Turismo, and chose that game over something that had big guns and well-developed girls on the box. And that was as far as it went for a few days. Then one evening I installed GTP and gave it a whirl. Having never used a six-axis controller for anything I was hopeless and took three attempts to win C-1. Decided that was never going to work and learning the sixaxis is not a skill I need in my life. But even through my fumbling fingers I could see the game's potential and invested in a GT wheel. That was an choice that would change my evenings for the next several weeks.
This game is fantastic. It's as true to life as a computer simulation can be, the cars are really quite different, and for a car nut it's great. I turned all the assists off, except the driving line, set Physics to Pro and started played around. Spent ages on the Cappu time trial trying, for no good reason, to get Gold with the automatic. Kept missing by a tenth of a second so switched to manual and easily managed it. Then I decided to stop messing around and really focus on the events. Everything I know about cars helped; look well ahead, slow in fast out, gears, engine braking, understeer, oversteer, lift-off oversteer even! powering out when you're unwinding the lock...all of that works in GT5P and that's why I love it.
Events that were hard -- A8, the Ferrari F430 one-lap challenge. That wasn't working for me, so I looked at the laptime needed for Bronze, went into Arcade and just focused on setting a time considerably quicker. Got a 1.55, came back to the event and with a bit of luck, ended up with a Bronze. The other one-lap Ferrari Challenge with the F40 is also very difficult. I used the same technique of just driving Suzuka in Arcade until I got a decent laptime, then went back to the race and managed a Silver. Changed the gear ratios on the F40 too, it's way too high geared for that track.
The other events that took me a while were S7 and S10, using the Mine's GT-R. But a bit of focus and you get there. I suppose it would be easier with Standard physics, but what's the point of that? May as well get someone else to drive it for you. But of course GT5P can be fun with other people, and I had three friends around to spend an whole evening going head-to-head in 2 Player mode. Fantastic fun, if someone was a little slower we just gave them a quicker car. One guy took the STi around High Speed Ring and got beaten by his opponent...in the Cappucino. It will be some time before we let him forget that!
And it all finished tonight, as I cleared the last S-Class event. Why is the Daytona Oval so easy? You may as well set the thing on cruise control. Hardly a challenge after S7 and S10.
And then I went and bought the F2007.
What an amazing car. You wouldn't think that a mere simulation could be so exciting, but it is. Even after driving all those other cars the F1 machine is something very special, and it's well worth completing the events just to have a crack at it. It's the closest most of us will ever be to F1. Also had a go at drifting, and failed miserably. Still, I will manage it soon. The genius of a true simulation is that the gameplay never ends. But for the moment, on to the dealership events...
