GT5P by a non-gamer

Hi.

I'm here by accident. A happy accident, that starts with a home cinema rebuild, which led to purchase of a new disc player. May as well be BluRay, even though in real terms I don't think BR is much of a step forwards over DVD. So, which BR player? A little research indicated no less than the PS3 was the one of the best, and hardly any more expensive than a dedicated player. So I bought it, and they threw in a couple of games.

I'm not a computer gamer. I am a car enthusiast, so I'd heard of Gran Turismo, and chose that game over something that had big guns and well-developed girls on the box. And that was as far as it went for a few days. Then one evening I installed GTP and gave it a whirl. Having never used a six-axis controller for anything I was hopeless and took three attempts to win C-1. Decided that was never going to work and learning the sixaxis is not a skill I need in my life. But even through my fumbling fingers I could see the game's potential and invested in a GT wheel. That was an choice that would change my evenings for the next several weeks.

This game is fantastic. It's as true to life as a computer simulation can be, the cars are really quite different, and for a car nut it's great. I turned all the assists off, except the driving line, set Physics to Pro and started played around. Spent ages on the Cappu time trial trying, for no good reason, to get Gold with the automatic. Kept missing by a tenth of a second so switched to manual and easily managed it. Then I decided to stop messing around and really focus on the events. Everything I know about cars helped; look well ahead, slow in fast out, gears, engine braking, understeer, oversteer, lift-off oversteer even! powering out when you're unwinding the lock...all of that works in GT5P and that's why I love it.

Events that were hard -- A8, the Ferrari F430 one-lap challenge. That wasn't working for me, so I looked at the laptime needed for Bronze, went into Arcade and just focused on setting a time considerably quicker. Got a 1.55, came back to the event and with a bit of luck, ended up with a Bronze. The other one-lap Ferrari Challenge with the F40 is also very difficult. I used the same technique of just driving Suzuka in Arcade until I got a decent laptime, then went back to the race and managed a Silver. Changed the gear ratios on the F40 too, it's way too high geared for that track.

The other events that took me a while were S7 and S10, using the Mine's GT-R. But a bit of focus and you get there. I suppose it would be easier with Standard physics, but what's the point of that? May as well get someone else to drive it for you. But of course GT5P can be fun with other people, and I had three friends around to spend an whole evening going head-to-head in 2 Player mode. Fantastic fun, if someone was a little slower we just gave them a quicker car. One guy took the STi around High Speed Ring and got beaten by his opponent...in the Cappucino. It will be some time before we let him forget that!

And it all finished tonight, as I cleared the last S-Class event. Why is the Daytona Oval so easy? You may as well set the thing on cruise control. Hardly a challenge after S7 and S10.

And then I went and bought the F2007.

What an amazing car. You wouldn't think that a mere simulation could be so exciting, but it is. Even after driving all those other cars the F1 machine is something very special, and it's well worth completing the events just to have a crack at it. It's the closest most of us will ever be to F1. Also had a go at drifting, and failed miserably. Still, I will manage it soon. The genius of a true simulation is that the gameplay never ends. But for the moment, on to the dealership events...

Well sir, that was a very entertaining read! Quite the happy accident.

FYI, the full Gran Turismo 5 comes out March 31st in Japan, and it'll reach other regions shortly after. I think it'll blow you (and me!) away.

Hello Mr. Accident and welcome to our addictive world :)
When your girlfriend/wife ditches you, you know you've gotten too carried away... a VERY thin line I (and most likely a few more around here) balance on.

Anyway: enjoyed reading your intro, very refreshing!

Welcome to :gtpflag:! There are a lot of great people here and they have a lot of awesome info, don't forget to use the search before posting new threads and read the AUP, that should keep you from finding troubles here. Great first post and happy tuning!

Very recognizable thread here:

* Not really a gamer (might have been up to 1990, but not owning games since then)
* Used the excuse of needing a BluRay anyway
* Wife complains I get carried away, but she does on Desperate Housewives, CSI, Monk, Close to home, ....
* Approaching GT5P from the view of a car lover (although without real racing experience) it is really more then you expect from this thing for kids.

P.S.: Talking about it, you find out quite some "grown up" people get excited about Flight Simulators on PC etc... => the age does not matter, the fun does

Interesting read, ive never really looked at it from your perspective, as since i was 9 ive been playing GT and have grown up with it, and have taken what I have learned to the real track 10 years later, sort of the opposite of what youve done...

glad you enjoyed it, youll soon be looking forward to the full GT5...

A great read, and a wonderfully succint summary of why after a year and a half of release some of us are still beating what's left out of GT5P while still discovering new ways to stay interested.

The joy of the AI events with a wheel and a car of your choosing will last a long time, but if you ever feel the need to drive competitively with fellow GTPers, head over to the Race Events or Weekly Race Series forums 👍

Welcome to GTP and Gran Turismo

All the best

Why do non-gamers love GT?

Because it's a non-game. ;)

I tip my metaphorical hat to you sir for sticking to pro physics even for S6 and S10. You took the road less travelled by... I drove exclusively std physics for several months and I had alot of bad habits to unlearn before I could beat S10 in pro.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Gran Turismo! Nice to see that people actually approach it from the car nut side of things and have good fun in the process. 👍

You need to stop now before its too late and you become one of us. Then come the withdrawal symptoms, rehab and the TA(Turismo Anonymous) Meetings. Heed my advice and quit now while you're ahead.

Thanks guys. While I bought the PS3 for its Bluray capability, and discovered GT5P, one of the friends who has played mine setup has been bitten so he's had to work it the other way around. He decided his life needed GT5P in it too, so we spent some time coming up with ways to justify a PS3 to his wife and then...oh, look...what do you know there's this car game as well! Who'd have thought! The backup justification is it's either this or real sportscar ;-)

I have two wheel/pedal setups now, great for the friends as only one of us can even recognise a sixaxis let alone control a car with it.

Is GT5P for kids? Only in the narrow-minded view of those who equate computer games with children, and they need to get inside more ;-) I take the view it's an all-ages game, program, simulator, call it what you will. If you have fun with it that's all that matters. Lots of recreations are multi-age; chess, books like Harry Potter, most sports. A computer-based recreation is no different.

Anyway, I defy anyone with even a passing interest in cars to watch someone playing GT5P and not think "I want a shot at that" -- if that doesn't even flicker through your mind then sell your car and take up knitting.

Heck... Tread of the Month :D

Idea:
any new member to this forum ought to write the same way before given admission...

I got my PS1 (slim) because i wanted GT2 and got it.
I got my PS2 (slim) because i wanted GT4 and got it.

I am glad to read you and to see a newly converted !
Welcome to the Bunch! ;)

Same for me...

I know it's a little late, but I see you've caught the sim-flu.
GT is an easy bug to catch and will have a hard time shaking it off. :D

Welcome raceur. 👍
Great post.

Nice writing Mr Accident...welcome!!!....but if you can, leave it before it sucks your life.. ;)

There are also some other kind of accidents...that I have experienced some very closely.

1) Son in law has one...I have to have one
2) My son has a friend that has a simulator with wheel, clutch, gearbox...I have to have one.
3) I have a friend who have a son who have a friend that has a simulator with wheel, clutch, gearbox...I have to have one.

Well I'm 32, my father in law after test the GT5P with the G25 for half a lap (I made a really arcade thing with some metal and an old car seat), Arcade, STI, no aids in pro, suzuka...he stand up and say: "Were I can buy all of this?", a friend of mine told his father...show him a video of us playing...THE SAME DAY HE CALL ME "...were I can buy...", 1 hour and 15 minutes later he bought everything....he show what he bought to the co-owner of his factory...now he also has the same...

Some accidents in life with GT
