Well I really don't see PD and T10 getting porsche anytime soon. Look at the Madden series. Since EA bought the rights to the NFL it's the only football game now and its practically a monopoly and they are getting away with it. Barely any innovation since there is no competition. Competition is a good thing EA look how hard you guys worked on BF3. You guys are gonna blow the pants off of CODMW3.

If you do a bit of research on the NFL licence and EA you'll find out that it was the NFL who wanted an exclusive licence with one games company and several of them made bids for the licence, EA's bid won.

With employees of Porsche lobbying the rights dept. to allow FM to feature Porsches I'd hope they refuse to sign an exclusive agreement next time, especially as it rules out their cars from the two biggest 'sim' franchises on the two biggest consoles.

I think PD needs to hire a car guy that writes up a list of categories and then select cars into categories. And make that guy peruse forums I guess to get an idea of want gamers want.

Kaz does his part with the SEMA and Concourse things, but sometimes I get the feeling they select cars from a dartboard filled with pictures of cars.

It's not just Porshe they do this with though. EA tries to buy up all the licenses for the games they make. Hell, if EA had the chance they'd probably try to buy the whole car industry. What makes it worse is alot of their games are not that good to begin with, especially their racing games.

Of course they do, it's a dog eat dog world, EA obviously feel that paying big money for exclusives is worthwhile, other companies obviously don't. Sky TV in the UK pay a fortune for their exclusive sports coverage like the English Premier League, NFL and Spanish La Liga. Big companies pay celebrities a fortune to endorse and advertise their products exclusively. What EA are doing is common practice in the business world, whether their games are good or not is irrelevant, that's up to the companies involved not to sell them the licences if they feel that EA's product isn't up to their standard.

Apparently the Porsche exclusive licence ends soon, and I hope they don't do it again.

I'd agree with you if it wasn't for one thing constantly being repated in the back of my head. My city's only skatepark, which was built in memorium of a fallen Marine named Benjamin Soto, was demolished in April. Since then it has been replaced with rusted steel rails and concrete benches barely high enough to actually grind with pegs without our tires hittin the ground. Now the problem with this is that the skatepark wasn't in the terrible condition the parks department claimed it was. Our congressman has cut 100% of the funding to the parks department until the par is restored into a real skatepark, not the crap it is now. Though I like that he is doing this, the point is that it's stupid to cut all of their funding just because our skatepark is gone. If PD were to do this, the hate that EA brought upon themselves would surely be brought upon PD and it would be a completely immature situation overall. Lead by example, don't follow like an idiot.

Lol! If you are old enough to drive and wealthy enough to buy a Porsche, it's inclusion or exclusion from a console video game will have absolutely no bearing on your desire to own one.

Why? EA are willing to pay the money for exclusive licences because they want their games to have something other driving games don't, good on them, they're spending big money to keep their customers happy. Maybe Sony should do the same and stop being so tight fisted and also, it's not as if Sony can't buy the rights to use these cars from EA, they can but they're just not willing to part with the cash to do so.

Hating on a company because they spend money to give something exclusive to their loyal customers is just plain stupid and whether the NFS games are arcade or not is just plain irrelevant.

By the way, there's a ton of supercar manufacturers out there who don't have an exclusive licence with EA or any other games company and don't have their cars in GT5 like Koenigsegg, Ariel, Gumpert, Noble, Ascari, Keating, Caparo, Spyker, SSC, Rolls-Royce (technically not a supercar manufacturer but prestigious nonetheless), etc etc etc.....
and lets not forget how the licences Sony and PD do have are underutilized in GT5, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bugatti, TVR, Bentley all have cars that are ignored in GT5, so what's the point of them getting Porsche and throwing in a token 5 cars and missing the rest?

People constantly bash EA for their exclusives but you have to remember the manufacturer are just as liable for accepting the offer. They obviously prefer the higher money from EA rather than having their cars featured in multiple race games.

👍

Voices of insight. At least some people understand the whole picture, not just big, bad, EA being mean.

 Some people see it as 'EA meany-pants!' They take Porsche from me!'

PD should really use the licences they do have, since they do have quite a few, and some manufacturers have 1 or 2 cars in the game. For example, the only premium FIATs are 2 500s. Why not a 500 Abarth, or some Punto Abarths.

No. A few years ago, Porsche had a commercial where a little kid goes into a dealership and says to the salesman basically, that someday he'll come back and own that car (I think it was a 911). If you get the bug when you're young, it sticks.

Plus, check out carmax.com. You don't need to be wealthy to pick up a used Boxster S. We're not talking lamborghini money here.

911 Carrera 4S. There's aused boxster by my house for 11k US. If I didn't need to fit a bike in my car, it'd be in my driveway.

I spotted somebody mention that Spyker hasn't got a licence with any of the gaming developers....

Why do I have a Spyker C8 Laviolette in GT5 then? It's a Standard I know, but still.... whats the story with licencing for that?

They wanted one in GT3 because it looked like a good new brand with history, Spyker loved that idea, and now it's in GT5.

Lets say you are like me...
30 years old and playing gt since it came out as GT (1).
Thats 1997, oddly enough, I turned 16 in '97...
Without GT I might not have been introduced to many cars as early as I was due to import issues. Yet for years I thought of the sti and evo as iconic cars. Eventually they started getting imported and when I saw them on the road it was cool, a car worth noticing. Now I drive an sti and although its not because of GT, I cant deny GT helped establish some of my initial interest in the car.

Why wouldnt that apply to porsche just the same?

Anyway... I feel like this sort of thing hurts porsche more than anyone else. Its like they skipped the party when all the other supercars of the world said yeah Im in, lets race.

The worst thing was how EA deliberately tried to unsettle Team 10 with the whole Porsche thing.

They dangled it in front of them and then got their lawyers to pull it away as close to the Forza release as they could get away with.

?

Turn 10 knew 18 months before Forza 4's release they weren't getting Porsche.

PD could do some great things with Porsche.

Just like PD did with Ferrari?

Why don't PD have talks with Porsche without EA knowing and try to come to some other exclusive deal im pretty sure there are going to be loop holes in any contract EA signed anyway, Maybe models of a certain age or concept models e.t.c.

Impossible. I think they have exclusive licence to the Porsche brand, meaning that you could theoretically have Porsches, but they wouldn't be called Porsches or have Porsche badges.

I haven't liked any NFS games since most wanted (the one released after underground 2). Those above mentioned cars would be a nice addition but I can live without them, definately not going to run out and buy any NFS games anytime soon having played the latest (shift 1 was ok but very glitchy).

Wow, EA doesn't even make good use of the license, or good racing games for that matter. Now GT and FM are both fighting the same battle to have Porsche.

I hope EA realizes it's really annoying everybody now. Not just the millions of GT players.

I suspect EA locked in Porsche on a very long term deal many years back, and Porsche's hands are tied.
That's my two cents.

If anything, this hurts porsche more than anyone else.
Not being in the game gran turismo puts them at a disadvantage for recognition with future drivers.
No kidding, a few weeks ago I was driving through a school zone on my way to lunch and a group of little kids started to holler at me as I drove by, I realized what was happening as their words barely got wrx across the highway... Little kids excited to see and recognize a wrx sti!?
Thats the sort of power a game like gt can bring to a car's recognition. Amazing- yes, but even more amazing is that porsche doesnt mind.

No biggie but I garuntee you could put all the different porsches in gt and people from 5-50 would know what a carrera gt is and would never mess up whats what in the porsche line.
And this is why I think Porsche is locked in atm. Hopefully it's not a lifetime deal, but tbh, I've grown accustomed to not giving a crap about Porsche's.

Like all expensive sports cars, I can't afford one, but Porsche's I can't even use in the best racing games to fulfill fantasy with, so I've long since written Porsche off my video game list, as I've no idea if I'm even missing anything good.

P.S. - The one thing I can do and have done, is stopped buying/playing NFS games. Of course, that's partly because SHIFT sucked so terribly badly imo.

Exclusive deals are THE WORST thing that could happen to racing games because there's si few sims as it is. I don't mean a combined effort, like the GT by Citroen or X10, but if PD locked down, I dunno, TVR, I wouldn't see it as a great victory, I'd see it as PD intentionally limiting the racing sim genre by restricting competition.

I don't see how this hurts Porsche. The company existed well before video games. Anybody who knows anything about cars will know the name Porsche. As far as kids getting excited about a WRX, they're how old do you think? When I was about 11 years old everyone of my classmates thought that the Pontiac Trans Am was the coolest car on wheels. :yuck:If you still think that at the age of 30, well I suggest you seek professional help. ;)

Just like PD did with Ferrari?

Exactly. There's no need to fight for Porsche when the Ferrari license is wasted on just 10 Ferraris. PD seems happy to watch Forza's car list grow epic, content to give players cars that few people would really like to drive.

I'd give up every single standard Skyline R32, R33, and R34 for the E30 3-series.

So if PD were to obtain Porsche, they'd probably include the last-gen 911 and some others to make 10 tops...

His point was that nobody had ever even heard of a wrx before gran turismo. I have to partially agree because I myself learned of many cars on gt1 and gt2 that were jdm only at the time and only a few years later were imported to the us. Look at the skylines. How Many americans new what a skyline was before kaz brought them to us through gt? so gran turismo is a fairly effective way to introduce new cars to new markets, though I doubt Porsche needs any introduction anywhere in the world.

If you're a car enthusiast you know what a Skyline is. And I'm sure people knew what a WRX before Gran Turismo. See here's the thing; yes Gran Turismo is popular, and it may expose some people to different aspects of the auto industry. You have to remember, however, that there are many people out there who don't play video games. GASP!! Why I am as shocked as you are! Go to a bookstore. You know one of those places where they have those things with pages and words printed on them? Sorry for the sarcasm, but some gamers act like books are akin to Kryptonite. If you go to the automotive section in the magazine department, you'll find a plethora of car mags. Motor Trend, Road and Track, Car and Driver, Hemmings, etc. Even Playboy has car reviews. And now people watch Top Gear on BBC America, and the US version on History Channel. There are other ways to learn about the auto industry besides Gran Turismo.
