Hey guys,
I'm an A+ controller user who primarily uses Gyro Steering. I'm by no means the best, but I'm also not the worst. That said, I do regularly find myself Top Split, so I believe I have some merit in making this suggestion.
When racing against wheel users, we controller players are at a clear disadvantage. Wheel users can feel the lateral grip limit of the front tires as the force feedback naturally communicates when they approach or exceed the grip point, inducing understeer. For us on controllers, this critical feedback simply doesn’t exist. Steering becomes guesswork at the limit, and it’s slower as a result.
The same issue applies to corner exits, especially when using 0 traction control. Gr.4 cars are manageable, but Gr.3 cars are much trickier, especially in the likes of the genesis x for example, making exits feel like a gamble when running 0 traction control.
I think Gran Turismo 7 / Polyphony should consider implementing an update that simulates a form of "de-steering" when the side grip limit is being approached. This would emulate the sensation that wheel users get when their steering becomes naturally limited at the grip threshold. Without this, controller users often exceed the grip limit and enter full understeer without realizing they’ve crossed the line until it’s too late - every corner!!
Currently, I’m forced to turn Tire Squeal to max just to get some understanding of the grip limit, but it’s still frustrating. Wheel users have the advantage of real force feedback, whereas controllers only provide vibration, which simply isn’t enough. There’s a ceiling to how competitive you can be on a controller, and it’s not close to the top.
For example, on certain tracks, I can qualify with a time in the top 100 global for the week’s Daily Race. On others—sometimes even my favorite tracks—I can’t finish the week in the top 1000. It’s not a skill or track familiarity issue; it’s technical exits and the inability to feel the grip limit consistantly. Lately, I’ve started to only select sport mode tracks based on controller competitiveness rather than simply choosing the ones I enjoy, which of course takes away the fun.
Please, Polyphony, make controllers competitive again! Right now, it feels unbalanced.
Either that or seperate controller rankings from wheel rankings.
This issue isn’t limited to joystick users, either. Gyro Steering, while more consistent, still feels muddy and less precise or pointy than stick steering, even at maximum sensitivity.
Finally, I also think there’s room for improvement with brake and throttle deadzones, but that’s another discussion entirely, and maybe the issue here isn't GT7 but the Dualsense itself.
Thanks for reading & Wish you well!
