So far after the first trailer there has been a lot of speculation about many aspects of the game and it almost seems as if it opened as many questions as it answers. I have decided to create a thread solely to keep track of what we know based on official announcements from R* or things that can be reasonably assumed based on the trailer. Please keep discussion limited to what is for sure or at least why something should or should not be included in the list. Speculation and guesswork (which is still fun and constructive) can go here. Thanks! :)

Release date: so far unknown

Timeframe: Most likely present day, near future or recent past. This puts it not too far from the time of GTA IV (~2008)

Location: In some ways this is still under debate however we do know that Los Santos and at least some surrounding countryside. There is no direct evidence that the rest of San Andreas will make a return in V and a recent announcement by R* (shown below) indicates that the game will focus on Los Santos and it's surrounding area (at least that's what we know for now). On the other hand the reappearance of jets and the fact that the original San Andreas trailer only showed Los Santos may indicate that R* is not yet showing their hand.
"We are very proud to officially announce that Grand Theft Auto V is in full development.
Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.
A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.
"

Main character: Surprisingly also unknown, we can reasonably assume that it is his voice we hear throughout the trailer and there are several people that may be seen more than once in the vid but beyond that we only know what he says:
"Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather,
Or the, I don't know that thing, that magic,
You see it in the movies,
I wanted to retire from what I was doing,
You know, from that, that line of work,
Be a good guy for once, a family man,
So, I bought a big house, came here, put my feet up,
Thought I'd be a dad like all the other dad's,
My kids, will be like the kids on TV, we play ball and sit in the sun,
But, well, you know how it is.
"

Graphics/engine: It seems that the RAGE engine returns and the graphics are an evolution of GTA IV, which makes sense given the development time frame.

Vehicles: The big news here is that airplanes have almost certainly made a return, in the trailer we can easily spot a crop duster, a fighter jet of some sort, and a shamal-like private jet putting it's gear down at the end along with the obligatory police helicopter. Otherwise it shows a mixture of sports cars sedans and commercial vehicles some of which return from GTA IV and some of which are probably new. Jet Skis also make their first mainstream appearance in GTA along with a possible return of bicycles and in one early frame the top on a sports car is shown retracting. There is also a blimp shown in several parts of the clip but so far it may just be background. For more in depth vehicle information go here.

Plot: Based on the dialogue from the trailer and the announcement made by rockstar it looks like the plot will at least partly revolve around the economy and possibly how it relates to crime, the voice mentions wanting a normal life/family after moving to LS "But, well, you know how it is" right before showing the beginning of a robbery. There is a mixture of poverty and wealth shown.

Here are some other minor but possibly important details gathered from the trailer:
the opening shot definitely shows a dog on the beach
the robbery scene seems to show two different versions of the same weapon
license plates may be unique per vehicle, and also feature different San Andreas scripts
there is also a seaplane shown in the scene with the wind farm.

That's all I have at the moment, please comment/suggest!

Excellent thread. I will keep an eye on this for sure.

A little sad that so far its only mainly Los Santos but Rockstar said its their biggest game which really makes me believe they are going to make it feel like San Andreas. Which to me, felt like their largest game. They even showed huge mountains in the backround in that video. If its real huge then I imagine it will be on 2 disks. 1 for campaign 1 for multiplayer. Thats just a guess.

I am hoping for more area to explore as well, I loved IV but it left me wanting in the end (a la GTA SA). Time will tell, most details about IV's scope were revealed before the game came out.

Why would it be on two discs? Maybe on the 360, but quite unlikely on Blu-ray.

Edit: Really hoping they'll surprise me with SF and LV, LS doesn't seem all that large in the trailer.

No way an open world game is coming on more than one disc.

You might get away with it in a more linear game with each level you advance to a new area so you only have to switch discs once or twice during the course of completing the game.

But in an open world game, a huge amount of the data is the open world itself, and it would simply be unacceptable to have to switch discs because the world was split across discs and you'd have to switch discs regularly as you drove around and back and forth between different areas. Not gonna happen. The only way it could possibly happen is if the game could be installed to the Xbox hard drive, but a lot of people have the hard drive-less Xbox version, so that's not doing themselves any favours. They'll cram it onto one DVD somehow.

On a related sidenote, one of Rockstar's development studios, Rockstar San Diego, who made Red Dead Redemption, began life called Angel Studios. They were given the job of porting the PlayStation game Resident Evil to the Nintendo 64. The big problem was that the PlayStation used CDs and Resident Evil 2 came on 2 CDs, implying that the people who made RE couldn't figure out how to, or didn't bother to, fit the game onto 1 CD. The Nintendo 64 used flash based cartridges which had a maximum capacity of 64Mb, 10% the capacity of a single CD. Yet Angel Studios managed to fit a game that couldn't originally fit onto a single 700Mb CD into a 64Mb cartridge.

The point is that if they are limited to squeezing a huge game onto an 8.5Gb DVD disc, they'll figure out a way. I think the time, cost and resources that go into designing and building these huge open worlds is more of a limiting factor than disc space.

I would not bet on this game being on 1 disk. They could put the single player campaign on disk 1 and the mp on disk 2.

But it's the game map, textures, 3d models, music, etc. that makes up the vast bulk of the data in a game like this. The code that scripts the single player missions and multiplayer gameplay is a drop in the ocean. If they can fit the entire single player campaign, soundtrack, voice acting and entire game map onto a single DVD, squeezing in the extra code and data for multiplayer will be trivial, as the multiplayer uses the same soundtrack, game world, vehicles, weapons, etc. as the single player.

It'd be possible an install of the 2nd disc would be mandatory. If you don't have a hard drive, then tough. And most people have one nowadays.

I'm now more on the fact that we are getting San Andreas.. I mean, look at the plate, does it say what I think it does?

xlarge_car_license_plate16x9.jpg

I think its because the region Los Santos is in is San Andreas, San Andreas encompasses Los Santos (LA), San Fiero (San Francisco) and the other one which was Las Vegas, so its not overly suprising to see a San Andreas number plate.

They can at least make a mandatory install that would fit on the 4GB Xbox. That is still a nice chunk of extra space to work with.

KieranMurphy is correct about the splitting of SP and MP modes...There's absolutely nothing to that. Its all of the textures, models, sound, etc in the game world that take up the space.

Edit: And yeah, San Andreas is the state containing all of those cities.

Possibly, but remember that in the original San Andreas trailer they only showcased Los Santos. I also noticed that the number on the plate is randomly generated, which wasn't the case in IV.

Whatever they build, it will be epic.

About those trailers from GTA: SA, I just went checking, and if they follow the same order for GTA: V, this is how it will work:

1st trailer: Only Los Santos (LAUNCHED)
2nd Trailer: Still showing most of Los Santos, with some cutscenes from San Fierro and Las Venturas, and some of the countryside.
3rd trailer: Show parts of all cities, desert and countryside. This one back in GTA: SA days was launched in some random day before the game launch, as the narrator says : "Game launch this Tuesday".

That's a speculation from me.

I would not bet on this game being on 1 disk. They could put the single player campaign on disk 1 and the mp on disk 2.

That's the most pointless suggestion I've heard, how are you going to play MP when the world map data is in Disc 1? The bulk of the data is going to be the map model, cars, sound clips, everything else is just lines of codes. TES5 Skyrim is a massive game and it ended up fitting on one Disc.

As far as the license plates go it doesn't mean anything one way or the other. It is most likely R* trying to be more accurate since in the US the state is always at the top of the plate whereas the system san andreas had would be inaccurate (city on the plate). This is only my speculation but I would say we will see other new areas of cali with LS being the focal point. I too recognize the pattern they set with the original SA trailers but I think now at the better part of 10 years later you can't take anything substantial from that.

I just realized that the trailer shown could simply be the intro to GTA 5 and it's recounting all the events from GTA SA, since several of the scenes are re-created SA scenes. It could also be showing what has happened since 2004.

One thing we do know is GTA5 is going to be massive. Three sources, including Team Bondi and Rockstar themselves have mentioned that it's huge, with Bondi saying it is "incredibly huge." Everyone who has seen even the early builds of the game have commented on it's size. With such emphasis on the scale of it, it is shaping up to be a bigger map than Just Cause 2. Which would be a huge leap from GTAIV's little map.

GTA SA took place in 1992. R* has stated that since GTA IV, the game basically takes place in a different universe. GTA III - GTA SA is completely unrelated to anything happening in GTA IV and onward. besides the occasional reference, like on the lazlow show.

Saw that a few days ago, I'd sure as hell rather have him than the skinny black dude that keeps popping up in the trailer, not that anything is wrong with black people.

There is definitely nothing wrong with black people. In fact, if anything, I'd rather have CJ back from SA. Sure it would be cool having that dude, but for all we know he could be the bad guy. I've read a few things that say that the person seen there may be Claude for GTA3. Who knows.

Nah it won't be comparable to Just Cause 2 in size. It would take 10 years to model a Just Cause 2 map with the level of Detail as GTA. It's probably around the size of Noire and Red Dead combined which is a fairly decent sized map. About 30 square miles. Red Dead was 400 :scared:

Somewhere between Oblivion and Farcry is my more realistic hope. That said, San Andreas sized would be ok, as long as the map is filled with things to do, and is very detailed.

Also, I didn't realise burnout was that big...

That...isn't exactly true, though. GTAIV's radio stations make several references to the events in GTAIII-GTA SA. Especially Lazlo's station. And, technically those games took place in different cities. (With GTAIII taking place in a mock Chicago version of Liberty City and GTAIV in a mock New York LC) And they all take place at different time periods. And...I seriously doubt we're gonna replay GTA SA. And if CJ does return...so...what, now we're going back to the GTAIII universe? No, it's been strongly implied that the GTA Universe is a single universe, not several small ones like the X-men universe.

And that's just the city. With the outlying lands and wilderness, it's probably closer to WoW.
