1831-1967, 1971-Present London Bridge:
Description: In the early 1800's, the "New" London Bridge was built to replace the outgoing 600 year old bridge, which was too narrow and blocked river traffic. In 1896, it became obvious that too many people used the bridge, and was widened by 13 feet. All this weight was too much, as it started sinking an inch every 8 years. By 1924, the east side had sunk some three to four inches lower than the west side. The bridge would have to be removed and replaced. In 1967, the City of London put the bridge on sale, this intrigued a Robert McCulloch, who brought it for $2,460,000 to jumpstart his planned city. It worked, as it now attracts everything from retirees, to college students who come once a year to get perpetually wasted on the Lake during spring break.
Crosses: River Thames (former) Bridgewater Channel Canal (current)
Total Length: 930 ft (280 m)
Longest Span: 45.6 meters (150 ft)
Number of spans: 5
