Additional Info: "One of the most radical entries in Formula 1, this six-wheeled racer was designed by Derek Gardner. Four specifically manufactured 10 inch diameter wheels were made for the front of the car, with normal spec tires in the rear. The concept was that the smaller wheels would reduce the drag that the larger tires had. Introduced at the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix, this car had a spectacular 1-2 finish at the Swedish Grand Prix, with Jody Sheckter taking the gold. Was able to produce solid results, but never won the world championship."

This is one of the few F1 cars that is popular by its own merits, transcending the typical motorsports myopia, rather than just with racing enthusiasts.

One of the unusual F1 cars..and it freaking worked.

Of bloody course it's Sub-Zero, it's one of the few badass, awesome and unique F1 cars that did well in the history of F1. Ofcourse if this thing failed, SU would of been it.

What a stupid idea...

It was actually an idea that worked.

Or should have worked, if Tyrell had managed to get continued manufacturer support for the tire sizes.

Better aerodynamics, better braking, spread out cornering loads. At the expense of extra weight (and more difficult tire changes). It's interesting to think about whether such an idea could work in F1 nowadays. Shame such interesting aero solutions are now banned.

It's a [relatively] modern F1 car (as compared to the cigarello types lacking any sort of aerodynamic appendages) and that does absolutely nothing for me--but its saving grace is its identifying characteristic. Can't go SZ because of the former, but the latter pushes it up to Cool.

Sub Zero. Daring and innovative, and powered by one of the coolest V8's in the history of V8's.

The DFV is legendary, and this level of innovation, paired with success, is incredibly uncommon. Love it.

SUBRC.

From a time when F1 was actually TRYING to be innovative. The fact it's the only 6-wheeled car to ever win an F1 race makes it very cool.
