hachi roku? nandio....

small, light weight, FR, large engine bay, good stable all round balance, hatchback, low stance, and they are just plain sexy! what else do you need?

Words can't describe the harmony of the 86. You just have to ride in one. Even stock, they are the most stable and responsive car I've ever ridden in. I think they have a very good weight balance which helps, 53/47 or something like that. They just make a lot of sense the way they were designed. Like you know how you can sit in a car and find little flaws like "jeez, that's stupid, I wonder why they did that." The 86 has very few, if any. If more car makers paid more attention to what they were doing and hired some decent management, I think more cars would turn out like the 86.

this is the best trueno out there

Pretty much what pergatory said. But I'll add a little. :) What's amazing about this car is not just how amazingly balanced and controllable it is, but that it has those characteristics in a low-cost, good-looking, reliable package. It also happens to have a fun motor that likes to rev and sounds decent. :)

Problem is they're so fun to drive and so cheap, they're often abused or their owners can't take care of them like they'd like to. It's very hard to find a good one that's for sale.

o right ic....can you get the car in GT2?...cos i knwo you can get the 83....anyway thanx for your replies....do you think its good if i practise in that car first?

the 86 in AE86 does not refer to the year of the car rather it refers to the chassis identification number. im not sure what AE actually means nor 86 but it has become quite famous. the earlier corolla you are reffereing to pergatory is a TE27 it was an earlier model produced from1972-1974 there was also aTE37/TE47 1974-1975 TE71 1979-1981 1981-1983 all came in trueno and levin models. the newer ones are AE92, AE101 and AE111. Toyota switched to a FF platform around 1991 to keep up with honda and others that were switching to a "safer" more economical platform. when this happened the AE86 was the last of the compact rear wheel drive vehicles in the market and it stood the test of time now becoming an icon. while it is a great platform to learn on, because of its short wheelbase you can easily get it sideways, it is outdated it can never keep up with a newer B series motor from honda... ON THE STRAIGHTS that is. i have video of keiichi tsuchiya beating a R34 skyline in the touge battle produced by hotversion. keiichi's challenge is open to anyone in japan who thinks they can beat his TRD AE86. so far he hasnt lost. the corolla can only be a winner in the hands of a skilled driver many of the current D1 and JGTC drivers learned on the AE86 and still own one in their garages. in a few more years it'll be a classic.

The hachi roku comes stock with a relatively potent 4 cylinder engine for it's age being 130 horse power 4A-GEU that redlined at 7000 ish I believe. Not only that, it was a RWD car with a perfect 50/50 weight distribution, maybe people still didn't think much of the car as a whole since the market was filled with well better all around cars come the time Drifting was it's own sport..However the hachi-roku being light weight acceled in racing at an incline, along with the fact that it's engine bay is enourmous in perportion to it's engine allowing it to be the host to a variety of different engines from it's home company Toyota, or from other companies such as nissan or mazda. The fact is, for being a VERY old car it can still go step for step with all of the so called "japanese supercars" in certain races

P.S.

The AE86 from 1984 to 1985 carried the 4A-GUE with 130HP
The AE86 from 1986 to 1987 Carried the same 4A-GUE however the connecting rods were "large bolt and nut" connecting rods
The AE92 from 1988 to 1989 as he said was a FWD model 4A-GELU only making 120HP with the same type of connecting rods and weighted slightly more
The AE92 from 1990 to 1991 aslo had a 4A-GELU with 140HP
The AE101 which was from 1992 to 1995 had a 4A-GELU with 160HP and had a 100Octane fuel requirment, also the connecting rods were now lightened and the fuel injection was now side fed as apposed to top fed of the prior models.
The AE111 had 5 more HP than the AE101 and came with a polished and ported cylinder head
The AE102 which was oddly left out of the equation came with a 7A-FE, and was built off of an All Wheel Drive platform, however it made 105HP and 117 ft lbs of torque....The vehicle WAS a wagon though, however it only weighted 20lbs more than any of the current corolla's at the time..

well said drifster. i love the sound of open carbs on a black top 20v motor its WeLL worth the price of installation and maintenance. if you have patience with the hachi roku as it needs to be babied the sound of the throttle bodies screaming at 9500 RPM is wayyyy better than turbo. and of course if you have DEEP DEEP pockets you can throw in a 3rotor from a mazda cosmo. that'd make a few heads turn at the drag strip. but the hachi roku is definetly made for downhill windy touge's and autoX courses. any course where these newer cars dont get a chance to use their horse power. its definetly an enthusiast car for those that dont mind the smell of fuel or adjusting their carb's if the temperature drops 10 degrees. and definetely definetely for those that dont mind sqeaks and rattles in their rides cause i havent seen one corolla that didnt make at least one unusaul noise.

the "hachiroku worthiness theory" is constantly shot at me at work. there is a great pic of the 86 on my desktop sliding in the rain. the other guys walk by and say

"its a toy!"
"are you sure that isn't a toy?"
"thats something my grandpa would drive to church"
"is your granpa a short?"
"that explains it then"
"i would like this doublespaced, collated, stapled, colored in and one other thing, change your wallpaper so its doesn't feature that car"

there is no doubt that the 86 is a incredible engineering accomplishment, the previous posts contrinbute to this idea, however there is one bite of information that ignorant people cant swallow.
aesthetics! i guess its that one hurdle that was never jumped with this car, its something that it seriously lacks, some say its not pleasing to the eyes, however...keep reading

ive grown attached to this shoebox on wheels that was the fisrt thing that featuref flip up headlights:odd: ,the car has the appeal of the "soyokaze" (see the irresponsible captain tylor)It fits suitably to the initial D anime with the ever so polular theme:

young boy unexperienced in the ways of growing up in an anime family, facing insurmountable odds, overcomes challenges with the sheer force of good character, special powers, and a party of traveling heros on a quest

we THE TRUENO almighty FAITHFUL SERVANTS like the way it looks......
WHEN IT DRIFTS, thats the main fascination here isn't it?

then we should call it 'superb functionality over modern cookiecutters'?

END RANT:cool:

they are bad little cars are we talkin about games or real life?

i have and 86 in real life they are good because they are cheap rwd cars with a bulletproof 4 cylinder easy and multitunable suspension parts available and small wheel base so it is easy to get sideways.

they are just bad lil cars

They switched in 1987 actually (for the '88 production year), the 86 was the last of the FR Corollas.

Well it's a good reliable cheap way to get around. :) At somewhere around 80hp they're not the most fun thing around, but they get the job done. The suspension isn't as tight as the AE86's either.

its a classic to me too.(drift260Z) in japan they are already celebrating the 20th anniversary because over there it was originally released in 83. i wonder if they'll make a tomica? (i think thats right) toy collection of it like they did for the Z. i'll be first in line if they do. i am especially fond of the styling of the hachi roku i really like the squared sloped sportiness its has. i am also a fan of the S30Z but when sitting inside one its hard to see where the hood ends. i like compacts for the reason of being able to tell where your tires and bumpers are easily from the second you sit in it.

as for differences on the hachi go and hachi roku the japanese versions are very different from each other. the hachi go doesnt have the same chassis reinforcements as the 86 nor the same engine. the 86 has a twin cam while the 85 has a single cam. in the U.S. we got two versions of the corolla also but we lucked out on one thing, we got the same chassis for both. our GTS came with the 4A-GEU and our SR5 came with a single cam carburated motor 4A-C and some later models came with an optional fuel injected motor. but on every one you can look in the engine bay and stamped on the firewall it says AE86. in japan the lower modeled SR5 is stamped AE85. their are some other differences too but they would take forever to list. one quick way to judge if its a 85 or 86 (in japan) is the two-tone corollas are 86's the 85's are solid colored. dont even get me started on kouki and zenki models hahaha tofu boys car is a zenki. zenki's have sprinter on the taillights the newer kouki versions have a solid red line across the top of the tailights theres more but again too much to list so... check out www.club4ag.com. any questions you guys might have on buying one or more differences between the models check here for more answers or if your just a fan check it out too its VERY informative. i frequent this site a lot.
