Handbrake being used to induce oversteer

Firstly: I'm doing this for fun and to get the cars, so please don't anyone do the line about "if you need help then you're not good enough for this".

I'm trying to gold all the stages (so that I get the cars). At the beginning this was easy. If I didn't gold a stage 1, or 2 the first time then I did the second time. Stages 5 and 6 are requiring a bit more work. I'm still only silver on 6-4.

I've been loading the laps of the fastest people to try to get some hints. In every case it looks as though the handbrake is being used to induce oversteer. I've tried it and, on those laps where I don't completely mess up, it is faster.

Fair enough.

However, should I need to be using such a technique at this stage? Surely the gold times will have been set to be achievable "if you're halfway decent, or if you work at it".

So, the question...

For 6-4, do I need to use the handbrake, or can I gold it with practice?

I haven't touched the handbrake and have yet to have a problem golding events. Just focus on your driving, not gimmicks. Smooth is fast.

Remember if you want to practice with a bit more flow there is nothing stopping you playing GT5 with the same car and track. I know that means driving parts of the track not in the tests but personally I find it easier to improve in constant flow of lap after lap rather than constant stop start restarting with one part of the track.

inducing oversteer with the handbrake will hurt more than help, oversteer is loss of speed and traction, proper braking and turn-in is the faster approach.

also if you're using ASM it will slow you down considerably!!! try as much as is comfortable to use only ABS 1, meaning no assists other than ABS set to 1.

I know it may not be much use to you guys but on round 6-4 I use the handbrake in the 2nd and 3rd bends although not very much, when I get it right I am half a car length ahead of the fastest out of that corner so it does work although you can get a fast time without using it. I'm in 3rd place on 6-4 at the moment, just need to work on the last corner

I haven't touched the handbrake yet on GT Academy; I normally only use it for drifting on Gran Turismo 5. You don't need the handbrake to gold the events, you just need to be very smooth with your driving. Once you become really smooth, then you can happily watch your laptimes reduce.

^^^ 👍 This ^^^

Why bother learning useless tricks when you can put the same amount of effort into learning to drive properly? If you win this thing and get into a real race car you certainly won't be using the handbreak to corner!

WRC and other rally cars are using handbrake all the time in hairpins.
You don't need to use handbrake in any of the GTA trials to get gold (at least so far), but to compete for top times, I don't see a way without handbrake in Eiger.

There also driving on dirt. There is no need to use the handbrake on any event. I hope everyone is using the handbrake on 8-5. Its only gonna slow you down.

I also seriously doubt PD will give a racing contract to anyone who can't go around a corner without using a handbrake on asphalt!

Not only. One example of intensive handbrake usage in WRC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puXllWOn67E
Like I said earlier, I don't see a way for good time in Eiger without using handbrake. But you are a good driver and welcome to prove me wrong at 5-2 :)

There is no need to have my name towards the top in any of these rounds. I'll show my ability during the last round. No need getting burnt out doing stupid challenges that don't mean a thing.

The handbrake is great in theory, but proper execution of doing exactly what you want to do requires a lot of practice. I ran Eiger because I thought it was fun, no handbrake. Top 50 time.

I used to think like you (O.P.) but it never worked for blasting out real fast times. Having a crutch like the E-brake will never let you grow. IMHO you try to possition your entries and exits to add to the next turn w/ as little brake as possible so your productive and smooth. Have fun w/ the crutch but to go fast it doesn't event come up on the radar. If you want rear end step out on entrance then bias out the front so you can use the progressive aspect of the footpeddle or remap the DS3 so the brakes are applied from one of the progressive buttons and not a toggle switch.
