Handling feels different when racing online

Don't know if it has been discussed before. I'm playing GT5P for the online racing almost exclusively. I do what I think almost everyone does, ie test tunes and get up to speed in the freelap mode and then log on to a race. The thing is that the handling of the car is ever so slightly different when freelapping compared to racing. The cars feels just a tiny bit more stable in the actual race than in the freelaps. Steering is a bit firmer as well. It's just possible to push a bit more.

Am I just imagining this or have someone else felt this?

I've not noticed this. Are you racing the Expert events (non-Expert events have the rubber-band effect / catchup / handicap enabled) ?

When expert events still had the Rubberband effect, there were differences... but now with no rubberband pulling or pushing the whole time, I dont notice any difference in free run or online racing... I imagine if you do intermediate racing or beginner you will feel this difference again....

That's strange... my cars always feel worse online... I've had to give up some really nifty and quick tunes because they're virtually undriveable once you take into account server lag.

Server issues can make handling really evil, if you've got a slow connection.

Even with RBE disabled for Expert events, there are still some small differences in handling between a free run and actually going online. As a matter of fact we have discussed this before, just can't find the thread anymore. :)

True.. it does feel different. Maybe tire wear model??

Or a tire temperature model. Some are quite convinced this exists.

The biggest difference I noticed is in a race, my console sometimes bogs slightly, due to how many cars are on track and the smoke and dust that has to be processed.

I am glad to here someone else confirm what I have thought for a while. Have'nt done very much GT5P online in weeks but I really do think that the tire temp/wear model shows up some times. Shows up more on the F2007,different grip levels in freerun than in race.

I'm glad I'm not alone with my feeling towards tire wear. I have been thinking PD has been experimenting with the effects of tire wear. (I'm your mouse in the wheel, PD)
The only proof I offer is in the 10 lap Fuji race. laps 1-3 are a bit slick, laps4-6 are by far my fastest and laps 7-10 I notice a decrease in grip and lap times rise.
I haven't noticed this in races with only 5 laps. Maybe, just maybe they are tooling with wear on longer races.

i've notice that i can do slightly better laptimes during an online race (without slipstream) then i can do during freelap practice. i had no idea how that came. Thanks to Cohiba100, i know why.

EDIT:

TYRE WEAR.
i've also notice that the car is more slippery after you went off the track. when you come back it will take a couple of corners to get the grip back. or is that just me?

It's probably all in my head. Many strange things can be found there...

no its not only things of your head! I feel differences too... i already said that sometimes (ex: M3/Fugi) i fell that i made a very good lap and i look at the lap time and see 1'43.. i think that it depends on the network connections or something like that..

you're not alone here 👍

i dont notice any different feeling in the car, but i have noticed the lap times are screwy. even with huge tow with drafts i still run same times. that is not sim like and is kind of disappointing when you are expecting a blistering time and it turns out to be same as normal lap in free run.

Remember guys. evens with STD (Standard mode) have rubber band effect.

Events with PRO (Professional events) have it turned off. In Pro mode it does not feel any different .. at least to my feelings and knowledge.

Many people noticed a difference; it was particularly noticed in the events that had RBE turned off, since free run laps should be the same as online laps in those events. But with many cars, a clear difference can be noted, resulting in slightly different laptimes for online and free run. It's pretty obvious in the 350z Cup event, even if you're not close enought to draft anybody. The effect is most obvious when tuning, since I am tuning the car to certain behaviour in free run. When I take it online, I immediately notice the difference (sometimes good, sometimes bad ;))

I am not convinced it has anything to do with RBE however. But with RBE-enabled events you can't tell the difference because of RBE. In the RBE-disabled events you clearly can, since there is no RBE messing with the physics. Perhaps it's just a small physics difference (e.g. tyre wear or other things we don't know about).

Not so much tyre wear, but definitely a form of "dirty tyres" (where the tyres gather up rubbish from the grass/gravel and take a bit of time to shake it loose and gain traction again) is in the game. You are not the only one to notice this.

I haven't done that much online racing and always the 5-lap expert races so i have not felt the difference in handling. I do know that i suck when being pressured but thats me not the game.

As for going off course, upon re-entering the track you are correct the dirt/grass does hurt the GRIP of the tires and it takes a few turns to clean them off. :)👍
