Has anyone played GT4 on the PS3?

If so, does it improve the graphics? I read somewhere it's supposed to and was just wondering if anyone has tried it.

I'm still holding off getting the PS3 until GT HD comes out though.
 
I'm not sure playing a PS2 game on a PS3 would change the graphics much, although the game would run faster than it did on the PS2.
 
GT4 was designed around the capabilities of the PS2. The graphics are part of the game (GT4 was better than GT3). GT4 wass designed so the PS2 could handle the game. I'm with you, TS, the better capabilities will just make the game faster.
 
I've heard that the PS3 has the PS2 hardware in it, so the PS2 games don't actually run on the PS3 hardware.

Yes, that's true. PS1 hardware is in it as well I think.

Apparently there has been problems with backwards compatibility in the console, so I don't even know whether GT4 works in it at all yet, unless someone confirms it does.

It really wouldn't boost the quality at all, because the graphics file is on the disc, not the system. Thing is, PS2 games have better graphics because their DVD discs hold more space than PS1 CDs, Hence more space is available for graphics. What I'm geting at is, the console doesn't produce nice graphics, it simply does the projection. Graphics, data and other things on the disc remains in the disc..

That's not necessarily true. Different hardware reproduces the same data differently, often resulting in easily visible differences. The core programming, 3D models, and bitmaps were the same for all versions of King Kong, but there were noticeable (and, reportedly, disappointing) differences between the PC, XBOX, and PS2 versions. Even different video cards in your PC with the same game can create differences; just look up any Nvidia vs. ATI comparison. How each company chooses to execute the anti-aliasing, the lighting, the shadow modelling...it all shows up onscreen.


As for whether the PS3 includes PS1 or PS2 hardware inside, it appears that there is indeed a fair portion of the PS2 hardware on the PS3 motherboard. Apparently, while PS1 emulation should be easy enough to run in software, a good PS2 emulator wasn't ready yet, but should be in later revisions of the PS3. Some say that they would prefer hardware-emulated PS2. I initially thought that software emulation would create an opportunity to improve rendering & anti-aliasing, but given the slow progress of PSCX2.... Well, as long as GT1-4 and GTA3+ work, that's all I care about. ;)

Increasing the hardware performance allows you to put more into the software, the if the hardware is overworked by the software, however, it will drop the quality.

I think about it with my NASCAR game on my PC. Back when I had my old PC with 128mb RAM and GeForce 2 MX (32mb) and 1.5ghz P4, I had to run most of the games graphic options turned off and couldn't even see every car on track or the computer wouldn't be able to keep up and my FPS would drop so low it'd crash the game. I couldn't even turn AA/AF on or it would be unplayable how slow it would run.

Now that I have 1gb DDR RAM, 128mb ATI 800xl, and 2.4ghz AMD Athlon, I can run everthing turned on and all the way up and a much higher screen resoloution and still get a steady 30-60fps. And this is with 6x Temporal HD AA and 16x HD AF.

Here, just look for yourself, this is same game, different computer.

But like they said, GT4 will just get better frame rates because it's programmed to get the most out of the PS2 hardware and a game can only look so good. It's like if I were to play NR2 (1996 version of the game in the above pics) on my new computer it'd look and run alot better than it did on my first comp back in '96, but it wouldn't look any better than it would on my old '01 computer, because it wasn't programmed with today's technology in mind.
 
I bet gt4 would just load faster.....and I think it will keep the ps2 framerate not increase it....after all all gt4 is is a program....put the same program in ps3 and the performance should be the same....just those nasty 15 -30 sec load times would disappear.

I guess the speed (by which i mean load speed) for PS2 disks on the PS3 will depend on the spin rate for the Blueray mechanics. I never found PS1 games to load any faster on the PS2 since the PS1 spins CD's at pretty much the same speed that the PS2 spins its DVD's (and therefore CD's too). I don't know what speed the PS3 spins its disks, 16x, 32x etc, but i guess this is the main issue when it comes to running games quicker.

same here,i noticed alot of psone games on ps2,with the enhanced options,faster load times and " smooth " visualls, cuts the draw distance in the games, gran turismo 2 and silent hill i noticed, they look better on the psone compared when played on the ps2, even without the enhanced options on,worser draw distance,faster load times.
 
Yep, I tried it out and yep, it looks the same as before and it loads the same as before. I just wish i could put the whole disc image so i can run the game off that.
