Triple post coming up, sorry.

I love insects and especially the bigguns...

Goliath bird eating spider

and how about this beauty of a centipede. You don't want a bite from this bacteria riddled beastie!

I actually have a number of camel spiders (I usually refer to them as wind spiders) in my house, and they do look exactly like that, although the ones living here are much smaller (maybe an inch in diameter).

I've caught one in a jar before, and fed it a moth. It's really weird how they eat... if you look at the picture that kikkoman posted, you'll notice that they have two mandibles (like any other arachnid), but they form a total of four "jaws" at the tips. When they eat, they hold the body of an insect across those jaws, and move them in opposite directions (the two left-side ones up and the right-side ones down, and vice versa), while opening and closing the jaws. It's kinda nasty.

BTW, note how thick and plump looking the abdomen is. Makes for a yucky mess when you swat them with a fly swatter.

chaser_fan, that centipede is just scary. I mean, what if that thing ran up and ate your face?!

[edit]: BTW, is that you?

Lol! No, that's not me. My balls aren't big enough to do that! We do have those centipedes here in Hong Kong though. My girlfriend saw one fall out of a box of clothes ouside a shop and actually rear up on it's (many) hind legs and go for an innocent passer by. Scary stuff!

That's some scary stuff (and I thought tarantulas were big; these camel spiders blow the things I saw out of the sky...).

Wait, I just finished reading Rumple's article; the camel-spider pic is allegedly fake. But the bird-eater one can be real (although I wouldn't hold the spider so close to my face if I were that guy...)

Jpec, could you delete some of those periods in your sig? They're stretching your posts out by about an extra 100 pixels, so now I have horizontal scollbars.

Well, how big is your screen resolution? I'm pretty sure that it shouldn't have an effect on anything above 800x600 (I'll make it smaller, but I think that if it's stretching your post you should get a bigger monitor...)

No, I have a 1024x768 res monitor, but it's a 12" screen, so I have my default font size set quite a bit larger than the normal 12px. Anyway, it's good now. :)

No, I live in California, and as I just mentioned, there are some living in my house, though nowhere near as big.

BTW, TVRKing, isn't this the second "big spider" thread you've posted in the Rumble Strip? ;)

No, you are safe from those things. But here in Vegas, There are black widows!! :mischievous: .. They hide in your shoes that you leave outside. And one more thing, they can kill a human with their venom..

They also like to climb up your very beds. Better tuck in tight! :D

I'm not too disgusted of spiders, I'd probably refrain from having one on me, otherwise they're pretty cool.
Roaches I cannot stand whatsoever though.

Actually, camel spiders are in a whole separate order (scorpions and spiders are in separate orders from one another too)... camel spiders fall under the order Solifugae, while spiders are Araneae and scorpions are Scorpiones. Here's some information on Solifugae.

I own a Goilath Birdeater Tarantula if that counts. Also used to own a Mexian Red Knee but it died. :( I wouldnt own a Camel Spider, though. They look weird.

I dislike all insects/things with many legs and other bits. Call me a wuss but I can't stand them.

If an insect or spider is dead and not moving I'll inspect it but if it’s alive I'll run, or casually walk into the next room. Most of the time I don't want to kill them with a shoe or anything for that matter because I don't want to have anything to do with them. I find them intriguing you might say but I like to keep my distance, odd yes.

The other night when I was using the computer a spider (A typical biggish thing with long legs) crawled up the wall behind the computer. I casually walked into the kitchen as I do and found the fly spray. I calmly walked back and drenched the poor thing as much as I could. The spider then fell down onto the floor around the power plugs and the back of the computer, I didn't really want to spray in that direction so I tried to forget about it.

10-15 minutes later this beast slid from the ceiling onto the monitor, and gave me one heck of a fright. I didn't want to spray the monitor with fly spray for obvious reasons and resolved to wait him out. He crawled down underneath the keyboard. I didn't have the guts to lift the keyboard so I just sat there and decided I was bored and if I should go to bed, it was like 2am. Five minutes go past and he crawls out onto the side of the table, I grab the spray and soak the thing, it scrambles back onto the table whilst its legs were having spasms. It stopped moving.

Now I had a dead spider on the table, yummy. So I got the spray and tried to spray it onto the floor , but nope it didn't work. So I got a paper towel cleaned up the over spray and flicked the spider somewhere.

So now I'm as happy as Larry.

Heh, I don't particularily like crawly things.

well according to this its not even a spider.

Solpugid Eremobates sp.
Small Western U.S. species; much larger Near East species are called "camel spiders" but are not spiders.

But I would still hate to get bit my one of those mofos
:D
