Hello,
If this thread is in the wrong place please advice me where it should go.
Thank you .

I could use some help from anyone who has used the Hauppauge HD PVR recording device, i bought one from amazon 3 weeks ago which arrived with no manual or installation CD, so i contacted hauppauge website who kindly sent me the CD to install there product, now for my problem, i followed instructions on how to setup the hd pvr to my PS3 and to the computer, then i installed the CD that hauppauge sent me, i installed the cables from the pvr to my computer as it told me to, then the
component cables to the TV, i also set the ps3 to use component but when i turn on the hauppauge nothing shows on the screen, there is nothing showing up that i can record no picture or sound. i no i have installed the cables correctly as i followed the instructions to the letter, so where am i going wrong.

Any help greatly appreciated .

I'm assuming you hit the power button on the front of the box and the light is on?

Make sure your PS3 is not set to 1080p. The maximum resolution for that recorder is 1080i. If the screen is blank, try resetting your PS3 video and then going into display settings and setting it to 1080i component. To reset video:

1) Power down your PS3 to red light
2) HOLD the power button until it beeps a second time, then release (total of two beeps from the moment you start holding)
3) Wait 30 seconds

You should now be in lowest resolution, and can go in and set it to 1080i or 720p. I usually choose one or the other of these resolutions to record depending on the game. 720p is better for shooters since few of them are running higher res than that anyway. 1080i is obviously better for GT5.

I know this may sound stupid but did you plug it in? Otherwise, it sounds like I'm missing some details.

I've owned a Hauppauge for almost two years, FWIW.

I haven't used a Hauppauge HD PVR myself, but I've done a bunch of video recording over the years. Do you have two sets of components ports on the back of the unit? I'm assuming one is for component IN (from your PS3) and component OUT (To your TV).

Once that is hooked up and the software is installed, you can then plug in the USB cable and run the video recording software that came on the install CD. If it didn't come with one, you can try googling an open source video capture software suite (if there is one?) or look into something like Pinnacle Studio.

The downside to using something like Happauge is the amount of dropped frames are just astounding using the USB connection, something like 1 in 5 frames IIRC, but this isn't something you will notice by just looking at it 👍

You may need two monitors for this set up as well, one to display what your computer is recording and the other a TV to display the PS3. Or if you have VGA or HDMI out to the TV from your computer, you can just toggle the inputs too. HTH

Yes i have turned on the hauppauge pvr and the computer also the PS3
and my TV .

Obvious question: have you opened the Hauppauge recording software on your computer?

Yes i do have two sets of components ports on the back of the unit? and i have installed the set of leads for component IN (from the PS3) and also the leads for component OUT (To my TV). the leads from the hauppauge to my computer and to the TV are installed correctly as i watched a video on youtube on how to do this, i also stated in my thread that niether the manual or the installation CD came with this product, but hauppauge website where kind enought to send me the installation CD, which i installed after setting up the hauppauge HD PVR. I do however only have one TV which i use for both my computer and PS3, but it has all the inputs and outputs for connecting multiple things on the TV .

in answer to your question yes i have opened the total media extreme recording software on my computer, and when i look at the screen on the right this is where i would expect to see what i am going to be recording but i dont see anything .

That's actually not even necessary to play.

I'd try to get an image on the screen so you can play and then I'd worry about the PC side. Double check your cables to make sure they are hooked up correctly and then also double check to make sure you are setting your TV to the the correct input.

Questions: Do you have HDMI hooked up to your PS3 as well? If no, I would advise that you should have both component and HDMI hooked up if you don't. On the PS3, it's easiest to switch back and forth between HDMI and component outputs.

Edit: I just read your last post. Are you having a problem viewing the game on your TV while you play or are you having a hard time seeing what is being recorded on your PC?
