Heel and Toe Downshifting Tehnique

OK guys today I got my Logitech G25 steering wheel and I love it! As I now for the first time have a steering wheel with a clutch and manual gear this is my first time attempt on the Heel and Toe Downshifting Technique. I must say it's a lot harder then I first thought of but I need lots of practice to master it perfectly.

What I am about to ask is do you guys have any advice regarding to the Heel and Toe Downshifting Technique? Is there anything I should be aware of while learning the technique?

I got one big problem while trying to master this technique is that during a hard brake before the corner entry I can manage to do the Heel and Toe Downshifting correctly if there's only 1 gear to shift down BUT if I have to do it continuously in fast paste shifting down several gears in a row my braking is out of balance, other words my braking is not smooth and steady. This happens because while I hold down the brake and the same time pushes the clutch and the throttle while shifting down the gears and when I releases the clutch and the throttle in the sequal I also releases the brake instead of keeping it down (my foot is sliding off the brake). This is the footwork coordination I got a major problem with and I simply CAN'T get my braking to become smooth and stable; for example braking at high speed where I have to shift down gears from 6th to 2nd quickly I can't hold my break steady while doing the Heel and Toe Shifting, other words my braking speed becomes unpredictable before the corner.

Any advice on how I can do a smooth and more ballanced braking in combination of the Heel and Toe Downshifting??

In advance thanks for the read and thanks for your help.

Not sure if these are valid to post here but thought they might be worth a look ... This guy has put multiple camera views whilst using the G25 on LFS and his video's are very detailed in regards to his technique :) he is a pretty solid racer and well worth a look imo ..

To anyone who fancies a moan! I already explained the video's are from Live for Speed and not GT5P :sly:

Thanks for the video man! I tried to study the video closely is that he manage to hold the down the break steady while doing the Heel and toe downshifting but as for me I CAN'T hold down the break steady while doing the Heel and Toe Downshifting which leads to unstable breaking before the corner entry, this is very very fustruating but I try. He is so quick doing it!!! I needs lots lots of training..

I use the fat foot technique because my pedals are close together and my ankle doesnt bend like that. I do it every day driving around the city. It makes everything smoother. If you can do it, go directly from say 5th gear to 3rd. You have to rev a bit higher, but it will save a little work for you. Too bad I dont have a G25 myself :-( I will wait until GT5 comes out I think. Maybe not...
But really all you can do is practice doing it, and doing it smoothly.

Heel and toe takes practice, I find it alittle easier when ABS off as then I threshold brake and the pedal is not pressed up against the stopper (100% brake), but either doesnt really matter to me. Just keep practicing and rather than just watch what others do, figure out a comfortable way for yourself, not everyone heel and toes the exact same way.

as a question, can you shift directly from gear to gear, like 1st to 4th, and back?

Sure you can skip shift as you wish

I don't own a G25, but I heard that you have to shift through every gear. So no 1st to 4th I think.

Incorrect.

The most accurate part of your post, heel and toe downshift are not something that can be mastered quickly or easliy. They do require a lot of practice to carry out smoothly, particulalry in the area you have mentioned, being able to hold the brake steady when 'bliping' the throttle. Once you master that its then being able to slightly modulate the brake pressure while 'bliping' the throttle.

Hate to say it to you, but mastering heel and toe shifts and being consistent over the vast majority of your changes is a skill that takes a long, long time to master. It is however well worth it, as very few things match the satisfaction of a perfect gear change (game or more to the point the real world).

i have the g25 setup with gt4 and the clutch does not do anything. its only paddles or automatic.

does gt5p now support the clutch pedal?

I can heel n toe in my car perfectly, but have problems with the G25 pedals because they are not inverted. Looks easier with the pedals on the floor, but I use a Playseat.

I'm Having the same problems. I've never driven a car before. So i looked on vids to learn. I started trying to drive slow so i can pratice starts(Without stalling and upshifts/Downshifts)
Once i've learnt to do that fast, i'll learn heel/Toe.

One question though. When breaking hard, i dont need to press clutch untill i downshift(And the car is okay, Wont stall) And If i'm stopping, i dont need to press clutch untill the Revs have lowered(Around 1,000-2,000 rpm) and im nearly at a stop, the car will idle/ Wont stall.

Thanks

You should be able to shift from any gear you are in to any gear you need for the corner. (for instance directly from 6-th to 2-nd...just like in a real car). You don't have to keep the revs up during the whole time you are braking. Just brake as hard as you need for the next turn, step on the clutch in the last moment and just blip the throttle shortly (with the outside of your right foot if possible...not necessarily the heel!) to match the revs for the lower gear before you let the clutch out. :)

(practice in your real car during your commute to work every day ;-))

To echo Scaff's remarks:

"It's all about practice: practice, practice, practice!" (Martin Hawyes)

Good luck, especially with the mastering of brake modulation with heel/toe. I'm sure it'll be worth it, especially if you can carry it over to the real world! 👍
