Hello, my name is Rex, and I fear I'm on the way to becoming a NOS addict.
Until recently I had lived a clean life and never even tried NOS. I'm not sure it was even an option in games like TOCA and GT4, and if it was, I was not tempted. I had always associated NOS with dirty back street racing like in Fast and Furious and, well... NFS.
But NFS reached out to me with SHIFT, tempted me, promised me a sim like experience with arcade like fun. At first I remained strong, concentrating on the 'sim'. Perhaps subconsciously I chose as my primary car the Porche GT3, a car without a NOS upgrade option, tuned it to a perfect 10, and went racing.
And there things began to change. AWD Japanese things that I would be leaving several seconds behind around the Nordschleife would suddenly come hurtling up behind me at incredible speeds along that long last straight, sometimes to snatch victory from what had been certain defeat. Obviously that wasn't just tuning. That was NOS. I was tempted. I succumbed.
So I chose the Nissan 370Z, tuned it to a 6, with NOS, and went back racing. Now it was like I had a secret weapon, an unfair advantage really. And for most races it was unfair. If someone showed up in a NOSless manufacturer loaner car they didn't have a chance. Even if it was still close at the start of the end straight, just hit the button and watch them become a speck in mirror.
With every feel of that surge through the engine I seemed to care less and less about such moral values as "was I cheating ?". The game let me do it... So I did.
And then of course there were those that would show up in their tuned cars. Suddenly the game had a whole new dimension, a whole new level. Suddenly there was strategy involved. Did they have NOS ? If they were pulling ahead, were they the better driver, or just using micro NOS bursts ? Should I be doing the same to keep up, or saving everything for the final straight ? Yes, suddenly there was as much strategy as you can have without pitstops and tyre wear. I loved it !!
And so here I am now, with the beloved Porche parked up, looking for a good car to tune to a 10, ...that will take NOS.
Am I in trouble ? Do I need to rediscover my moral compass ? Please advise !!
