Help me understand the fuel map

I don’t seem to understand the fuel mechanics enough to make confident decisions. I’m quite often surprised by how it behaves and it brothers me.

For example: when the indicator says 2,3 laps left, does this mean that I have at least 2 laps to go no matter how I decide to drive? Or is the indicator related to my current pace? Will it change in value if I decide to go faster or slower?

And how does the fuel map affect fuel usage really? With an average race pace, will 1 lap left on fuel be exactly 1 lap with fuel map 3?

I always though that fuel map 1 drained the fuel incredibly fast so I barely used it before. But there seems to be more to it. Hopefully you can help me with understanding these mechanics.

It's based on some type of average. If you conserve fuel, it will slowly alter over time. So for example, if it indicates you have '2' laps left, and you start coasting into every corner, easing the gas out of the corner, short shifting ect, you will be able to make more than 2 laps. It will slowly adjust to your driving habits, in my (granted limited) experience.

2,3 laps means that you have 2 and 1/3rd laps left to drive with your current fuel map and driving style. That means you will run out of fuel (at the beginning of the second sector or so) if you dont pit within the next 2 laps or go to a higher fuel map (taking into account that you read the info at the start-finish straight)
You can decrease your fuel consumption by either lowering your fuel map (like in F1 games nowadays), short shifting or coast before braking, just like in real life.
The higher your fuel map is, the less fuel gets used during combustion: Less fuel usage, longer stints, less power. A lower fuel map number causes the opposite.

You can watch your fuel consumption over the laps and calculate in your head if there is a 3rd lap possible. Lets say, you see that you use only 0,8 laps of fuel per lap. therefore you know that you can go 2 more laps when the indicator is on 1,8 laps (if you stay on the same fuel map)

Thanks for the answer. Helped clarify a lot. :)

That's exactly what I was gonna say, honest.
Well words to that effect but you explained it better lol.
