GTP, I need help. As many of you probably read, I'm engaged now, and obviously I have a reason to care now about living long and being healthy. I got the idea of posting this here because of the "find out how to get in shape yourself" part in the description of the category. I just need to loose weight. I'm 6'1 and weigh 268, give or take a few pounds, and its mostly fat.

I just need a free and fairly easy way to loose it. I need sugestions people!

Oh, and just so you're wonderin, Kari didn't want me to and didn't even hint that I should, I'm totally doing this on my own so I can be with her a long time and be the best I can be for her and later on for our kids.

Go and get yourself a copy of the Atkins Diet book, and check the website here http://atkinscenter.com/

It works, and doctors are starting to recommend it.

A good start is to cut all sugar out of your diet - people don't realise how many calories it adds to your intake.

Add up all the kcals/fat/carbs/protein that you eat each day over the coarse of 3-4 days. Then cut your carb and fat intake by 25% each, and increase your protein intake by 50%.

Do 45mins cardio first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.

I would recommend starting off by walking for fifteen minutes each day, at a pace fast enough to raise your heart rate some.

Do this for two weeks.

Then raise it to half an hour of walking.

Once you get twenty pounds off, and a bit of muscle build up from walking, then you can think about either joining a gym or other forms of cardio without stressing your joints too much.

A guy I work with is doing the Atkins diet. He's lost 30 lbs. He's also at least 50.

Also, cut out your Soda-pop intake. 6 Pepsi's=900 calories.
Cut out High Salt snacks as well. They will cause you to retain fluid. Now, don't cut out salt altogether. Your bod needs it.
But if it comes out of a can, or is a "pop it in the microwave" meal. Check the sodium content. Your intake should be around 2500-3000mg per day.

Get a supplement to go along with your new diet and excersize program.

Hydroxycut is a good one as well as HotRox. But HotRox is kinda expensive. They work though.

Like Mr. Olympia said, cut your carbs and sugars. Those are some of the worst things for you. Carbs, if not used for energy turn to fat very easily. Eat more protien. Chicken breasts and lean red meats are great for you.
You can also suffer through some plain oatmeal, fat free cottage cheese, (good source of protien.) Salads with fat free dressings. Nuts are a good source of protien and good fats, just don't eat to many of them, just use them to tide you over to your next "small" meal. Try to eat smaller portion sizes but eat more frequently during the day. This will speed up your metabolizm.

Excersize. Do cardio. Run, jog, walk, arobecise, what ever you feel comfortable doingl. Cardio will burn away that fat in no time along with a good diet.

You should also be drinking nothing but water. Lot's and lot's of water. Like 2 gallons a day! And black coffee too. It's a diastolic (I think?) anyway it makes you piss alot so that you don't retain water weight.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Boom, I think you mean diuretic.
Another tip that I just remembered is portion size. One smaller portion will fill You up. Set your fork down between bites. For some reason it helps you to eat less/feel fuller quicker.
Also, eat your big meal at either breakfast or lunch. You'll have time to "burn it off" before bed.
If you just can't stomach Fat-Free Salad dressing. Get the "real deal" on the side and dip your fork in it before each bite of salad. You'll get the flavor you like with a LOT less dressing.
I've recently been started on an appetite suppressant, and in the last 6-weeks I've dropped from 292lb. to 270lb. :D.
It's helped me cut my snacking. I cut the soda on principle. I've pretty much been drinking either carbonated water, plain water or unsweetened Ice tea.
When it starts getting cooler, I plan to start taking a walk three to four times a week. My goal is 240-250lb.
wish me luck.

Diuretic! That's the word I was lookin for. Thanks again Gil. ;)

I wish you the best of luck Gil with reaching your goal!
I've got a few pounds to trim off, but only to get my abs that I've worked so hard for to show up better.

Hmmm, I just realized that this thread is kinda old. Wonder how psonefreak did with his diet?

Thanks. I'm gonna be 40 in about 6 months, and I wanna greet that birthday looking good, and feeling fit.:D
I don't think that if I worked around food all day like you, I could lose any weight.
Gaining would be no prob. I LOVE to eat. And, as far as I'm concerned most of the best tasting things are carbohydrates.

Crank?:P Kidding.

Good luck, though, seriously.👍

I quit drinking soda a long time ago. It's crazy how much weight you can lose just from quitting soda. That crap is so bad for you. I tried a diet Coke the other day just for the hell of it, and the next thing I knew I had like 5 of them in 2 days.:scared: They're addictive, I guess.

The Atkins thing is a *****. It's hard as hell eating less than 18g of carbs a day. We have some little bottles of Sunny Delight in the fridge, and they have 40g per bottle. We've got some cookies that have 18g a piece. Bah.

Actually Gil, working in the kitchen is one of the best ways to loose weight. Since I see food all damn day, the last thing I want to see is food.

Booze is another fabulous weight gainer! Full of carbs, empty calories and sugars, and usually consumed in large quantities right before bedtime.

Beer is out - shots are in.👍:D

Any advice on how to gain weight. I think I need to. I already work out, so what's next?

Smoke marijuana. Oh, you've already got that covered.

You could try weight gainer formulas. Some are drink mixes, and each drink contains like 2,500 calories! Friggin' A! Or you could not move all day except to shove another glazed doughnut in your face.👍

My wife and I tried Atkins. At the end of the first two weeks, we split a small order of Fries from Dairy Queen, so they weren't the good fries from Micky D's or Long John Silver's. But those were the BEST 12 french fries I EVER had.
I have oher reservations concerning the Atkins diet.
Too much of the wrong kind of protien is known to cause cancer. Plus, Atkins allows an inordinate amount of fat, and other cholesterol sources. I was eating a 2-3 egg omelete EVERY day. And I come from a long line of folks with Heart Disease.
Plus the diet causes your urine to turn a funky color, because it overworks the kidneys.

Actually, the drug I'm on is called Adipex. My Doc called it "speed". However, I don't find myself "wired". I will get a little wired if I drink caffiene after 2:00 in the afternoon, and not be able to sleep till after 1 or 2 in the morning.
I am a bit more focused during the day. But I turn into a 'pumpkin' a lot earlier in the evening if I sit still doing something calm and quiet.
The other major side effect I've noticed is a kind of "hot flashes" that hit me almost every morning when I get on "the unit', as I'm starting to try to get my meds out to my patients before 8:30 AM.
I also do check my Blood Pressure fairly frequently. And there have been no adverse changes. My Blood Glucose levels are staying in the 90's to low 100's AFTER a meal. (a blood glucose reading of 180 and up, 2hrs after a meal may mean you may have some diabetic issues)
The Doc said he expected me to lose about 10-lb/month.
I'm surpassing that so far. I hope I hit my goal by Christmas and can maintain the eating habits that I'm developing long into the future.

Eat A LOT!

But not just any kind of food. You still have to eat healthy. Don't do like Josh said and sit around and stuff glazed donuts down your gullet.

You need to eat things that are high in carbs and protien and if you feel hungry, EAT!

But you need to exercise too. Stay away from cardio, that's gonna burn the calories you are trying to save.
Lift lots of weights. Lift lot's of heavy weights! Don't let your muscles get used to your workouts either. The human body can adapt to your workouts amazingly fast so that you will plateau and not gain muscle. You need to mix it up weight wise or speed wise. A muscle doesn't know the difference between a dumbell curl and a incline curl, it only know's the difference between weight and repitition speed.
To get muscles bigger, you need to strain them and tear the muscle. Tearing the muscle will promote growth and increase strength. When you "tear" a muscle, it's that all to familiar dull muscle ache that you feel a day or two after a work out. Thats where eating a lot of protien comes in. Protiens help with muscle reconstruction.

So if ya want to get big, eat big and lift big. But just eat the right foods.

@ Gil, adipex (aka-speed) Is it a ECA stack?

E=Ephedra, Xanodrine, of effedrine.
C=Caffine
A=Asprin

Actually,
It isn't. I looked it up in my Nurse's Drug reference.
Its action is not known. But I can tell you that it makes it a LOT easier to pass by all the food that we see.
You would not believe the amount of food that comes in to a hospital from the families of grateful patients, Parties, and just because.
I weighed 255 when I started at MMC. I weighed 292:eek:
on 5 June.
I currently weigh 267, as of today. (Boo-Ya!)

Hrmm, 267? Wow, you've still got 100 on me! I'm steady at around 165-170, the most I've weighed was 180, back 6 months ago. If I gain more weight, I hope it to be muscle, but I'll have to start lifting again for that to happen>....:(

Hey, Gil, ever heard of Seborrheic Dermatitis? PM me when you read this, okay?

I'm 5'3" and weigh in at about 122lbs. Its a good mix of muscle and fat but mostly muscle. I don't look very cut but I have some strength. :)

Actually, no.
I can tell by the mane that it's some kind of skin condition.
Mostly, I see what the "old folks" call "galling". It's when you get a really angry red rash wher fold of fat rub together incessantly, and that area never gets truly dry.
Like under the a well-endowed woman's breast, any under a really obese person's tummy fold.
