help needed with video card

I have a nVidia TNT2 Model 64 on Windows 2000 Professional.

The Win 2000 install came with drivers for that card, but when I played Midtown Madness 2, it detected the card properly, but I could only use software mode. So I installed the drivers for Windows 2000/XP from the CD that came with my card. Then when I tried to start up, it wouldnt' show past the startup screen but it did the startup sound and everything, and i could press the keyboard keys to make it shut down. Ya know, Windows key, up, enter, enter (not ctrl+alt+del). I got mad then and too the card out after I had shut it down.

I got online with my original card Intel 810 Chipset (2 MB) and DLed newer drivers from the nVidia site and shut down. I poped the card in and started in safe mode and installed the drivers. When I restarted, it still wouldn't show past the startup screen. Then, I restarted in safe mode and told it to use the original drivers that came with Win 2000, but it still did the same thing. I don't know what to do, does anyone else?

Umm if I recall you don't want to remove the Windows drivers that came installed on system unless you are upgrading the driver from MS. You can however, remove the drivers for the videocard itself that are from Nvidia or the card manufacturer.

Maybe try running off the onboard video with the card in your AGP/PCI slot and install the XP/200 drivers and after rebooting install the new drivers you d/led from nVidia's website. It sounds like you've already got the windows driver installed though. I am not sure if this will work though because I've never experienced a card not booting.

If the drivers are the new detonator drivers(43.45) and when you install it says it "it isn't safe to install these drivers for your card", ignore it and go ahead with the install. The drivers were released at the end of March so they aren't digitally signed by MS.

I am not sure if any of this helps... Maybe someone more experienced can help.

yeah, the 43.45 is the one that i downloaded. Yes, I do have the windows drivers install, but I think the other drivers updated them.

How might I remove the ones I dled and put the original Win 2000 drivers?

Remove the Intel 810 card and drivers. Insert your TNT2 back and start up Windows 2000. 2000 should automatically detect the card and install the default drivers. Restart and then install the 43.45 Detonators. Finally restart and the drivers should be updated.

Had the same problem myself, you have to remove all traces of your old grapics card first ...just like Viper Zero says :)

Well, if I understand correctly, the windows drivers are seperate drivers from the nVidia drivers. Are you trying to remove the nVidia drivers(43.45)? If so you would probably want to go to Start Menu>Settings>Control Panel>Display>click settings tab>click advanced>Click adapter tab>Properties>Drivers tab>Uninstall or other options. If you need a picture of what the window looks like I can take a screenshot of what I'm talking about.

If you're wanting to uninstall the windows driver for your video card, I think that can be found under Add/Remove in the Control panels. At least, thats the way it is on my system. On mine it's called "nVidia Windows 2000/XP Drivers".

I really think that those are the default windows drivers and not the device drivers themselves. Maybe someone can clarify the difference because I'm not 100% positive if that will solve your problem. I would remove the nVida drivers first and reinstall the drivers that came with your card(If you got a cd like I did) and then install the 43.45 drivers.

EDIT: Viper Zero is probably right. And I typed this long post...

ack... nvm.. it didn't quite work... um... when i uninstalled the Intel 810 Chipset thing and then restarted with the TNT2 in, it started up and would go to full mode. When I tried to play Jedi Knight 2, it said there was no 3d card, and to check the list of supported cards. Mine is on the list, and after I installed the 43.45 Detonators and restarted again, it failed to boot the card again.

oh i figured out why.

It has re-installed the Intel 810 thing. I started it in safe mode and uninstalled it AGAIN and it worked fine with the 43.45 Detonators.

Anyone know how I can make it stop re-installing the old device other than taking it out? You can't take it out, its part of the motherboard.

You shouldn't need to then. As long as you don't have it's drivers installed it shouldn't cause a conflict with your main card(Unless you're running dual monitors, then I don't know). I think. Congrats on fixing your problem.
