Ask Me :)
Don't ask me :(
A few days ago I noticed on my pc there was an update for java. It was from oracle American inc. I did not run the update and checked to see what oracle America was, turns out it is a virus. I downloaded a trial of antivirus software but I'm still scared its on there. Please help.

Prior to your free AV trial you just downloaded, you had no virus protection AND surf the net, AND download files?

What makes you think it is a virus? Oracle America, Inc is just the formal name for Oracle. Oracle bought up Sun and has maintained Java for a few years now.

Okay, but can you check google Oracle America virus update says jucheck.exe, other people on forums say it is a virus.

The first hit when you search google for jucheck.exe is from the java website. It's just a process that runs to check if updates are available.

http://java.com/en/download/faq/jucheck.xml

I see there are other results talking about a trojan with the same file name but those are all from over a year ago. Unless you are having performance issues I don't see any reason to believe you have a virus at this point. You could always search your computer for jucheck.exe and make sure it's in a Java directory and not some random suspicious place. I think you're okay though since yours says its from Oracle America, Inc and not some fake name.

I also noticed when I was on the computer I could not access the AVG website or McAFee website at first I thought that was blocking those website so I could not get any antivirus software, could that be true. The update does say Oracle America Inc but I just want to be 100% sure.

Best way to be sure would be to click on your start menu and do a search for jucheck.exe and look at the location(s) of the file. If it's not somewhere like C:\Progam Files\Java\jre... then it might be a problem. I think you're okay though.

I'm on windows 7 and the search directly from the start menu doesn't bring it up either. Check your JRE folder. The version number might be different on your machine.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.5.0_22\bin\jucheck

Or browse your C drive and search there.

Driving a car without a seat belt isn't dangerous. Hitting stationary objects and objects moving in other directions than your own, that is dangerous.

True, that goes for some people in my family.
So does anyone think my PC is okay ????

Download Malwarebytes', update it and make a full scan.
Also, don't use McAfee, I'd recommend avast!, Avira (both free), or Kaspersky and Nod32. Also don't forget that you shouldn't have two AV programs running at once.

When I used Windows, I didn't use AV. Common sense is enough.

No, it's not, not anymore at least. Java and other exploits are too common nowadays.

If you do any amount of internet research, browsing, etc, common sense is not enough unless you have your browser security tightened down, but then the resources on the net are basically unusable which makes the whole thing pointless.

G.T.Ace provided a good list of options for AV.

Thanks everyone. I did a 30 day trial of Kaspersky, and it was really good. Just to be sure I might just wipe my PC because other users on my computer may have picked up something undectable. I will buy Kaspersky and start from a fresh.

Which is why you should have them disabled until you want to use them.

Google Chrome with plug-ins disabled until you need them. That's enough with common sense. If you want to be crazy, you can disable JS, but then there's no point in using the internet anymore, like you said.

The last couple of years I used Windows, I didn't use an AV and I didn't get infected by anything. I only ran the occasional full scan in Malwarebytes.

However, if you want to use an AV, which an average user should, I definitely recommend MSE. It's great.

I doubt you ever scanned for Rootkits, just saying.

Why not just use Microsoft Security essentials. It scans for everything, and has live detection for everything, rootkits, trojans etc (not to mention its totally free and without ads). Nowadays all your paying for is a pretty user interface, and the more expensive the program the bigger notifications.

I know a college computer that uses it and it comes up every few hours complaining about viruses, you click it to fix the viruses, and it comes up with the same dialog every time! I've been using Avast combined with Malwarebytes for the last 3 years and no problems.

Why some people trust Microsoft regarding security is something I'll never understand anyway. Just look at the Internet Explorer...

I think this as well. If you are the people who built a faulty system that can not protect itself at all from virus' why would I trust your anti virus?
