Help with Gradients using Inkscape

I some help with gradients. Every time I apply a gradient and upload it it shows up just being black. For instance I have a box and want it to have a fade look with one side being a dark black and the other end being a light grey or transparent. What do I need to do so it will show up right after I upload it.

Right. I read through it a couple of times and for some reason I can't get it to work right. If its not to much trouble could you PLEASE explain how I can fix this problem.
