This isn't exactly a problem with iOS 5 so that's why the new thread.

I'm trying to update my dad's iphone 3gs to iOS 5 with my computer for him as his computer isn't working at the moment.

I connected it to my computer and it's recognized by both windows and itunes. After connecting to itunes I can see "iphone" written on the left hand side but when I click on it (it never attempts to sync itself) all it says across the main part of itunes is "IPHONE".... I have no tabs, no main screen or anything like that on itunes all i get is iphone written across the screen.

Looking for some tips on what to do here as I'd like to get this done for him and to get iOS5 on there.

Hard reset the phone. Hold the Home button and the Sleep button together and hold them both until the phone restarts and you see the apple logo.

Wait for it to boot to the lockscreen Before connecting it. Restart your computer and make sure you are running the latest iTunes. See if any of that helps.

HA! got it to work with the hard reset. Tried the restart of computer and reinstall of itunes but those didn't work. Thanks very much.

I have a similar problem that I hope someone can solve for me. I upgraded my 3GS the other day to iOS 5 (ie, I connected my iPhone to my laptop, iTunes recognised it and found the iOS 5 update). Now, when I try to update my mum's 3GS (no, not 3G) in the same manner and I 'check for updates', no iOS 5 download is to be found. I've rummaged through a plethora of sites for someone raising a similar issue but to no avail. I've plugged her iPhone both in to my laptop and the office PC and the problem arises with both. :(
